  • Re: Poor Minecraft Performance

Damn dude, I honestly have no idea why wouldn't run well. It sounds like a pretty prime little Minecraft box. Are you running 64-bit Java?

Even if you weren't though.... there is no reason for it to run like shit.

  • She straight up froze.....

Last night I was derping around on my PC, browsing the internet as usual.

    Gigabyte EP45-UD3P
    Core 2 Duo E7500
    XFX Radeon HD 4850
    640GB Caviar Black
    4GB G.Skill DDR2
    400w Delta DPS-400RB
Antec Solo case with great ventilation

This is my main PC. My broke college ass only has this and my laptop, so I care deeply about this computer's well-being.

She has never, ever, let me repeat, EVER given me ANY trouble. She has always been rock solid and fast, just as you would expect from any Gigabyte-based system.

Ah man. You should have sold some of those SFF P3 boxes.

    They make excellent home servers.

Correction: on Windows 7, after going to sytem properties, hit "advanced system settings" NOT "device manager"

    Sorry for the confusion.

  • Re: The 2012 Operating System Thread

Windows 7 all across the board, except for my fileserver/torrentbox which is XP Pro.

As for BeOS, I messed around with Haiku (an open-source modernized clone of BeOS) and I was thoroughly impressed. I have needs that can only be addressed by Windows 7 but goddamn, if I could use Haiku as my main OS then I would.

  • Re: Sharing a printer

Also, avoid connecting your printer directly to the WiFi network if it has that option. I tried it with an HP printer and it was a neverending series of headaches. It just doesn't work right. Of all the things that can cause bullshit drama in a family, it was our sketchy POS printer.

I threw that piece of shit away and hooked up the Brother laser to my fileserver, and did a setup like the one I described in the post above. Not a problem since *knock on wood*

  • Re: Sharing a printer

Super easy dude. We are going to set up your XP Home machine to host the printer, and your laptop is going to print wirelessly. Note that with this setup, your XP Home computer must be turned on any time you want to print from the laptop.

    1) Make sure both computers are on the same workgroup. On XP, open up the device manager (right click on My Computer) and then check the "Computer Name" tab. You can make up any workgroup name you like.

    2) After that, while you're still on the XP computer, go to control panel and open...

  • Re: Somebody I know claims that "Windows 8 came out for tablets already"

Windows 8 has some neat new features, but the new interface is gay. If I wanted a smartphone I would have bought one. I'll give it a chance but I'm pretty sure I will be sticking with the paragon of excellence that is Windows 7. Windows 8 needs a touchscreen to operate well anyways.

  • Re: Shuttle WiFi Adapters

RD I may have to send a care package your way pretty soon. Would a PCI wifi card work OK? It needs an antenna, a recap, and a PCI bracket... but it has an Atheros a/b/g chipset that is fully Linux supported.

I have never had a USB WiFi adapter work right. Either they die, or their performance is shit from Day 1 and they live a long painful life.

  • Re: 486DX2-66 worth keeping?

Ah man guys, I ended up having to throw the thing away to make room for a G4 Power Mac and LCD that I found. Now I'm reading through this thread and I think I may have made a mistake. Oh well, it's gone now. At least I tinkered with it for a bit and took pictures.

    started a topic Xeon throttling

    Xeon throttling

I have a Dell Poweredge 530 workstation that was serving as my Minecraft server. It's a 9-year-old UCSD dumpster special, but it has two 2.4ghz Xeons and 2GB of RAM. Not bad for a dumpster computer.

Buddies all stopped playing Minecraft, I myself got kinda tired of it, and parents were bitching about the downstairs computer (P4) being slow. So the Minecraft server got decommissioned and I installed Windows 7 on it for the parents. It surprisingly runs Windows 7 like a fucking champ. It runs better than XP.

Anyway, I am concerned about power consumption. Are Xeons...

This concludes my photographic documentation of the Packard Bell dinosaur. I hope you enjoyed it, if you'd like to see better pictures of any particular component please ask. If you are the type who gets anal about inline pictures and bandwidth, I trust you have enjoyed this thread greatly and hope you have a marvelous day Re: 486DX2-66 worth keeping?<br /> ...raAmizYY[/url]

Agreed, I have a 700mhz P3 box as an XP Pro fileserver and it is a quick, snappy, cool running little machine. This thing runs faster than a lot of the early P4s. I have had terrible experiences performance-wise with the early-2000s 1.x Ghz P4 Dell black boxes so I didn't expect much out of a 700mhz P3, but it blew me away. Pentium 3 was a great processor.

Yes, it has an all-in-one sound card/CD-ROM interface thing, along with a 500mb Seagate HDD, onboard video, 3 ISA slots. You are a Packard Bell connoisseur sir ....

  • 486DX2-66 worth keeping?

I have recently received a 1994 Packard Bell 486DX2-66 computer. It has a Matsushita motherboard which is the biggest reason I like it. I am a huge sucker for stuff that's Made in Japan, and I've never seen a Panasonic motherboard before.

    Anyways....

We might be moving into a house soon and I thought it would be badass to load Windows 95 on this thing and throw it in the garage for mp3 duty. However, I have done some research and anything pre-Pentium struggles with mp3s due to floating-point performance (or the lack of it).

It pains me to throw such...

  • Re: Death of the desktop PC

Let me get back to you on that tomorrow. I've been reading BCN in small bursts since it has been a busy day, and I didn't look at that report very closely.

Not a very smart way to go about a debate, now is it?

I'll get my shit straight in the morning.
