pcbonez is absolutely right. in a linux-only world, FAT and NTFS would never exist, as would windows networking , and other flawed systems. a linux box can be a spreader without being sick.

there ARE linux viruses, but they never made it out of the lab and assume knowledge that only the user would know.

did you even read the article i linked in my last post? hello?
just remeber that ubuntu is vastly the most common distro. theres a reason for it.

Linux viruses don't spread because most users are bit more experienced than on windows. When they notice stuff happening they investigate.

They both have security holes. I don't think apache got any more by being windows compatible, it just got more popular. When you look hard at any piece of software you will find holes. Simple as that.

Neither system is obviously less secure. 75% of it is users running infected stuff. Holes that require no user interaction are patched fairly quickly on both sides. If you run virus binaries you will get a virus and nothing will stop that short of scanning everything with magical virus definitions that don't exist or severely limiting functionality.

Neither OS is the holy grail of anything. Everyone hates microsoft because they charge you money for something you have to tweak. Linux doesn't and you get the same thing + more access to what your computer does. When you pay for something you expect it to not give you problems and that is impossible with computers and software.

Linux does suck on some things at the moment, just look at the mess which is sound. Just use what you like. I rip into OSX because they dumb down the interface, make you buy their hardware and act like they are better than everyone else with 0 evidence. Don't fall into the same thing with linux vs windows.

OS-X did dumb down the interface, but you can still access the terminal just like you can in Linux. Go to the "spotlight" (little magnifying glass in upper right), type terminal, and hit enter. Boom! Instant terminal. It should be very familiar to any Linux user. Use the directory utility to enable root access. You now have complete control over OS-X.

I know you can use terminal but the whole point of a gui is to be able to go without it. Otherwise what is the point.

nxb, unix is obsolete. unix- LIKE operating systems still exist (linux, bsd, mac os, hurd, etc), but not actual unix.

then explain why xp had to be sliced and diced to run on an eee pc, but most linux's would run with only a few tweaks. back when my eee pc had winshit xp, it was WAY slower than ubuntu. add antivirus (i used comodo free) and the mircoshit half was slow as hell. ubuntu works great on it. but vista wouldnt run on one.

therefore, xp is slower. its only fast when you have no av, and other stuff. but who REALLY runs windows without av? if you do, then you're a dumbass. even mirosoft admits that you need to have additional antivirus to make it usable.

btw, with linux, you dont have to mod it but you can if you want. with windows, you have to mod it but it is sometimes illegal to do so.

linux isn't always legal, just because its osi does not make it completely legal unless you use debian. fwiw i have the original acer aspire one and linux fails on that machine, especially ubuntu. the only one i had running easy was opensuse. windows was just as fast, with AVG. honestly i used to not run windows without Av, just AS. I'm not an idiot who visits malware-filled sites. you don't have to call people dumbasses ratdude; common sense prevents most problems.

LOL... so a firewall is an acceptable substitute for an AV program? Each one does its own thing. Just because the windows firewall was enabled and they got a virus, doesn't mean that the firewall wasn't doing its job. If the user clicks "SURE! I'd LOVE to install PERSONAL ANTIVIRUS 360 180 1024x768!!!!", there's not much either program can do to stop a potential virus installation.

linux is more secure. ever notice how it always needs a password? thats because to do certain things, you must login as root, which is an added level of security. viruses are much harder to write for linux, and the only ones in existance never made it "to the wild"

is linux perfect? no. is it closer than perfect in terms of security compared to windows/mac? yes.

if i recall correctly passwords don't really protect much. i would say the DOD and NSA improvements and SELinux patches are what makes linux secure, but that's just me.

the reason i say dubmasses is i have a friend who computer had no av and was always on limewire... i converted her to linux (and gave her limewire for linux ) and she loved it. but she is pretty dumb with computers.

linux fails because i need ndiswrapper when winxp came with the wireless. archlinux and opensuse both have working groups developing their own kernel modules for the wireless so i didn't need it. i'm not a hermit, but obviously to get phished you have to click on something... don't click on it lol not that hard. at the most he got attacked but maybe a nice cheap NAT router would work. what is his webmail? how do you know all the sites he went to were safe?

really, i'll switch to arch linux once cubase 4, simcity4, and expression studio work correctly. when the idiots at GNU decide to finally settle on one sound library, i'll switch. for now, i'll just dualboot.
