To get "phished" you have to be an idiot and put your password or credit card info in a site without checking the URL. That is how they get 90% of people. The rest would be viruses with key-logging. Its harder to compromise a computer than an uneducated user.

oh REALLY? my dad is very computer literate. he taught me to build computer and mess with windows. now, i know more than him, but he knows better, and asks questions.

btw, it might not have been phished, all we know was his computer got a nasty virus despite mcaffe (he uses comodo free now) and at the same time some one opened up a fedex account in his name (with his gm card) and tried to ship crap with it.

well....i WAS going to ask a question about 7, but it seems this thread has taken a turn for the worse.....and it wasn't even my fault.

As for AV......almost 20 years with different PCs.....never ran any AV......still have no problems.....behind a NAT router......but thats been only the last 4 years......5 boxes running XPpro.....had a couple Linux boxes a while back but put XP on them because it was easier to get them working together.....i'm sure i could have gotten the XP and linux boxes talking, but i didn't know how.....the XP route was a no-brainer.

since TC seems to be liking 7, i just might go ahead with my next build.....i7 3GHz, 12GB ram, and 3 nVidia 9800s...........should do some insane folding.

The only time I ever got a virus was when I left an old version of IIS (or "personal web server", don't remember) running overnight on my laptop, which was connected directly to the internet by a modem. No firewall, unpatched IIS. It was stupid, and I got Nimda through a network exploit because I was running a server carelessly.

I ran antivirus for a couple years after that, but decided it was useless and stopped renewing it. I've still never had any viruses before or since that 1 stupid episode. A simple NAT firewall is much more useful than antivirus, as it prevents network attacks that you can't control. Antivirus just guards against installing evil executables, which I don't have much problem with. If on some rare occasion I need to download an executable that I don't trust, then I just submit it to an online scan, and I don't remember ever finding a problem when I did that.

I use Windows and Linux for different things.
The "free" argument really doesn't mean much to me. It's the friggin operating system - I don't mind paying $200 for something that works and I'll keep using it for years.

Linux is great as a command line server environment, but it sucks as a GUI. Windows is the other way around.
As I think somebody mentioned earlier, the reason Linux is so well developed as a server is because companies are paying money to support development in that area. The parts of linux that are truly free - not subsidized - are no more special than most Windows freeware. But it's a great deal for the server software, which works great because someone else is financially supporting it.
Linux as a desktop GUI is fun to play with sometimes but I'll still be using WinXP for the foreseeable future. Probably much longer than Microsoft wants me to.

At $200 a pop to be completely MS and MS legal around here I'd have to fork over around $2400 JUST for "the friggin OS".

at $140 a license.....i think 7 is a bargain.....sure as hell is for XP......linux is fine for those of you that want to fuck with it to the nth degree....but i want something that just works good out of the box. sorry....but windows has linux beat all to hell in that respect as far as i'm concerned.

don't even come at me with the linux guis....i work with the shit all over the place at work......just don't....

Yea and? MS isn't exactly poor, and the BSA would be happy if they could extort money every time you turned your computer on. In reality they only care about commercial and large scale piracy. That was the point of WGA... to stop hardware resellers/repair shops from installing pirated windows.

No, that is not reality. Not even close.

If that were true they wouldn't be hiring people to troll ebay looking for private parties selling single legit OEM CD's without a chunk of hardware included.

I KNOW they do this because I got pinged for trying to sell a legit unopened copy of NT4 WS which isn't even a supported OS anymore.

That is ebay policy, ergo ebay removes your auction. Violating the EULA is not criminal. Its not piracy either. It does involve money so they made ebay implement this a long time ago. EBay are douchebags, they changed site policy just for me to cover my specific item.
