that was one idiot. then again, the idiot is the guy who thought making an energy drink look like fuel additive was a good idea.

                  Fuck you.

Also I'm done with this. Sorry I had to drag this on guys, it's just when I see idiots spewing bullshit [ratdude] it pisses me off. Unlike ratdude with Windows, I will admit that Linux is pretty badass. I just hate how its fans push it as the end-all to OSes.

except it wasn't bullshit. it is best for most users.

stop talking out your ass. you think "linux sucks" and are too chicken to admit it. as my one friend says, "mean what you say and say what you mean"

on a side note, what was so great about os/2? ive never used it so i wouldn't know.

Re: Apple-spend thousands instead of upgrading

three years ago, I built a brand new C2D based machine. I tried Mandrake (can't remember the version, but it was the latest). Didn't like it. Slow....couldn't do the things I wanted to do. Tried RedHat...same thing. Then I put on XP Pro. Does everything I want and didn't have to go searching for drivers. Only one for XP that I needed was ATI Catalyst driver. That was it.

Now...to end the argument, XP worked out of the box. I didn't want to take all the time required to get those two flavors of Linux working. Now you Linux-lovers.....if you can't understand or accept that, well....its a lost cause. I like my Windows....you use your Linux. Don't try to convert me.....like those religious nut-jobs.

You should have tried to build it with known harware working on linux. I don't think any linux fan will say everything works on linux, they will say that some compagnies doesn't provide a way to made it works.

I'm using linux as my main os since more than three years and i was not building machines and never had much issue with drivers.

Ten years ago, i did use linux and it was painfull. Just to made all things works, it was like a puzzle and when all the pieces was in place, i just booted in windows 98 (at that time). I used BeOS a while, it was just so fast and great but well... after some years and a dead Be inc. it was difficult to stay updated with it.

So i kept using windows and XP was good enough but what made me swicth back to linux is ubuntu. It was not perfect neither so much better, but still faster and i could keep my computer and do stuff i liked to do without upgrading it.

What's funny is how some windows fan (as linux fan) say everything works fine on windows and it's not like linux when things will be working in the next version. If so we would be using windows 1 and it would be awsome! :P

Never use 7 or vista, but it's like 7 is a vista with things now working as they should (most of it). (If i belive the reviews and what users said)

Re: Apple-spend thousands instead of upgrading

Ubuntu kind of set a precedent to get everything working out of the box. The other distros either follow that model or don't. Mandrake is now mandriva and went out a while ago when Linux's motto was still "Hackers Only" and "Frustrate the Newbie at any Cost".

Many folks experiences were formed from that time (not too long ago) and Ubuntu was really a godsend to try and break that image.

As of now linux works out of the box better than XP. Familiarity issues aside, many things "Just work", the most important one being networking.

Ever reinstall XP only to find the NIC needs drivers? I do not have driver CDs for 99% of machines I service and own. If you have another machine you can just download on there but if it was your only computer, you would be SOL.

Vista and 7 have kind of picked up on including networking drivers and its probably close to what Ubuntu minded distros contain. It is kind of funny to boot a linux live CD to download XP networking drivers, however.

Oh, I'm SO much into games and they are SUCH a priority in my life that...
... for my last 'new' game ....
... I had to install a W95 emulator in W2k to even get the damned thing to load.

I found Ubuntu to be much easier to install than W2k or XP.
                                It's simply NOT THAT HARD...

SC's problem in Win7 is a video problem, appears to be DX related. All the menu screens appear in 16 colors, but the game actually displays and plays fine once you start one. I haven't really looked into yet, I'm sure there's a cure for it already, as there's a lot of D2 and SC players out there, so I'm not too worried about it. Win7 is growing on me, but not enough yet that I'll mainstream it on my daily use system. It'll take time. I puttered around with XP for a couple months before migrating my main system to it from win2k. Like I said before, I'll wait for the first service pack, which will likely cure a million quirky things. I just hope the first service pack isn't like vista's, which hosed it worse than it already was.

Another Win7 thing that really pissed me off.......no quick launch toolbar. You have to manually create it. How retarded!

i used media center 7 for like a month and while it was cool (and a HUGE upgrade from vista media center).. it was nowhere near as cool as plex.. i'm currently running a mac mini with a wiimote as a remote and downloading every show i watch.. then again. i'm one of those mac people. The only traditional pc in my house is the dell dedicated to testing stuff i write in ie6 (which i despise that i have to support but i have to support it).

It really is as simple as this. People who play games like windows because you pop the cd/dvd in, and it runs.

Such as I play fallout 3, cod4, cod5, tf2, gta4, omgwtfbbq, etc... on my computer. Well, I need winders for that. If I didn't use my gaming computer for games, I would be using linux. Then again, if I didn't use my gaming computer for games, I wouldn't even have it!

I still like to play UT2004, painkiller, Far Cry, and older games like diablo 2 and starcraft on my optiplex, so I have xp on that and it works great without having to install any drivers. I also have cry-al up at my mom's house, and linux just works so well with that..... at my dad's house we have uverse and I am thinking of dual booting linux on my main machine there just to see what it's like.
