    Re: Windows XP EOS plans

XP will run for months without crashing. My parents have done that a few times.

I've already seen Microsoft break Windows' built-in drivers for older hardware so the hardware appears to have failed.

I never had stability problems with XP.....but I imagine M$ being so gung-ho to kill it off, it will be developing a bunch of new stability and compatibility problems...

Most likely, would be the next version of Skype and a lot of new programs outlawing XP...

The BSODs I get are just a sound driver F-up, which is much less likely to occur with the good ol' Emu 10K1-based SoundBlaster Live!

It's possibly a race-condition bug and the trigger is loading multiple Flash-based videos or simply jumping to different sections of a video in a video player. Sometimes, when I rewind or fast foward, boom, a BSOD!

IIRC, XP often blames kmixer.sys, a Microsoft mixer component.

Ok, I have heard about this 'update' but I thought it was a joke.

kb2394207 - it is not. It is actually an update for xp

                  Re: Windows XP EOS plans

I still run XP SP2. Haven't had any issues at all with that, and I don't have any anti-virus software. Just a good hosts file and being somewhat careful online is all that is needed.
                  ...
okay, I lied. There is one more thing that really is needed if you are running SP2 - update KB958644. If you don't install it, you will eventually end up with the DownAdUp worm infection, even if you do nothing stupid online! It will spread on your flash drives too, and eventually other XP SP2 systems. For this reason, I have autorun.inf files disabled in XP. This is probably good to have anyways, since it can prevent other infections from spreading from media with autorun.inf files.

So yeah, this "XP support is ending" means nothing to me. I've been running "out-of-date" for a while now and I doubt anything will affect me "immediately".

For XP systems, I always install SP3 and call it a day. Never had any trouble with malware yet.....but yea, good hosts file, and I dont do silly things online.

I just made a gift to my Windows XP Pro, few minutes ago bought a licensee of Advanced SystemCare 7 Pro, for 11 EUR.

Never seen such well made software for windows maintenance.
After testing it for 8 months for free, and testing even the trial Pro version,
I got convinced that it worth's rewarding the programers team behind it.

I will sound as advert but I do not care.... In this software, the system optimization tab, is all the money.
They manage to optimize all widows services boot up sequense and fix any errors to them.
Second in total value but worthy, their registry cleaner, and HD defrag utility.
I have disabled all the other stuff ( Automatic memory managment) & (turbo boost) & (internet security).

By my opinion my XP SP3 is now as fast as XP SP2 which is great.
With quad core CPU & 4GB Ram , I do not need software tricks for boosting performance.
But the fine tune in windows services that this software does, it is remarkable, especially in Pro version.

Actually, it's today in this country

My last XP machine (my Thinkpad T60) has been de-commisioned. The last thing I used it for was driving the Oscilloscope and webcam when load testing power supplies. I now use my old C2D E8400 main rig for that.

I've been XP-free for over a month now... I don't really miss it. Aero has actually grown on me a little....I'm still a bit more productive with it in its classic look form (I have some with aero on and some with aero off)....but one adapts with change, it doesn't bother me now. S2K8 with aero off is pretty much a carbon copy of the XP shell.

Parents still use xp on 3 rigs (dad's laptop, parent's desktop, dad's htpc in the excersize room). May begin moving to 7 by way of SLIC mods (which I've for the most part mastered inside and out) and upgrade copies (which I've freed up one by way of slic modding and re-activation). I still use xp on (and will keep using it) on:

Dell latitude d630: already has win 7 and linux too in a tri boot. I keep it around for x32 uses
Dell Pricision M70: tried 7 on it, IIRC there were sound issues. That said, it also needs a new keyboard (bad fn key, drifty trackpoint) and I do have linux, so it's not a critical use system.

I have no EOS plans. I'll use my old XP PCs until they stop working then move on to something else as the need arises. I've already disabled Windows Automatic Upchucks when the last round of them broke itself a couple of months ago. My antivirus stuff, etc. still updates. I'm not particularly concerned over it.

Windows 8.1 Update - Today, they are making Win8 work for people coming from XP/Vista/7 but allowing people that don't have touchscreen tablets to actually use a computer like they expect to.

I'm trying to figure out how to update but if I like it, I'm going to upgrade both my Win7 desktops fairly soon.

Now if only I could figure out exactly how to get this update? Oh, and it should be called 8.2. But whatever...

Agreed it's all in how you use your PC, I have 4 older IBM Think Pads Pentuim M's 1.6-1.8 range still plenty fast for everything but youtube good beater laptops. They won't run linux becouse of missing PAE. I restored them to XP and will use them they way untill they die.
