I did for a while......and they were sold completely as-is. XP will be the same way.... I always do offer the option to upgrade to something newer......but at their discretion. I really don't see a lot of XP COA's anymore, most are Vista.... I'll spend a few bucks and throw enough RAM in the machine to keep Vista happy and run with it. With 2+ GB RAM, Vista actually runs pretty decently.

To add to this, MS will be extending support for MSSE, so unlike win2k, that's an ace in the hole XP will have for extended life beyond EOL....but that said, I won't use it on anything mainstream in my fleet. The hardware and memory quantity standards have caught up with the demands of windows 7 and vista, I would have no reservations of using them if the machines have COA's for them....but yes, I will still use XP on some older stuff that has XP COA's, but remind the customer of the situation and recommend an upgrade.

I find that a decent dual core (decent Core 2 Duo or Athlon II X2), 3-4GB RAM, etc. will run Vista, 7, and 8 fairly well. Vista really isn't that bad we just needed the hardware to catch up. They were trying to sell single core 1.5GHz Celeron M computers with 512MB RAM with Windows Vista when it first came out. Of course it's going to run like crap

I work for an MS Registered Refurbished I went and poked around their portal - there's some fairly good marketing material in there for used PCs and for XP on its way out.

Microsoft sends due windows update 500k file in a form of patch as information message about EOL.
I do not trust them enough so to accept to download it.

I've got an Asus Eee PC 701 which has XP, of which I am planning to install Android (x86) on it after finding the right drivers (including a TV tuner, upgraded wireless card and Bluetooth adaptor) and build for it.

I will keep XP on old machines that don't have internet access, for running older programs and hardware, just as I already do with Windows 98, Win3.11 etc.

My main machine already has Windows 7 on another drive, that will stay, the XP drive I will replace with Linux, most likely Xubuntu.

Will use Linux for day-to-day use and Windows 7 for gaming and anything else that will not work in Linux\Wine

You aren't running Windows at all. I used a version of Windows that is even older than XP just to see what Microsoft's silly little website would say.

How about because is fun every little program to replace the system DLL files with ones that the software author have modify, so his own software to work and nothing else. LOL

Yes, that's 98 on a Gateway Solo 2500. This forum takes a while to load on a Pentium II, but at least it has a decent keyboard.

I wonder where the message telling me to update my browser comes from. I have the home page set to about:blank, and that message telling me to install IE8 for XP SP2 appears immediately after opening the browser.

The oldest machine I've got floating around here that works is a win2k system. Don't even know where my 9x install disks are these days.

You are a brave man not so much for going online with 98, but with Exploder. Specially old versions of IE .

Each version of a browser self-identifies with a user agent string. That's how MS knows you 'need' to be pestered with 'you must update' messages.

You could fool the pestering by changing your string, but on Exploder the change will be just ephemeral.

I bet that looks like as stamping over our heads, which will continually remind us how ugly we look by using XP.

If I was Bill I would set even a timer to it, so to make you look as fool every week at list, by watching our full-screen Win8 reminder message. LOL
