I keep trying to swap my dads hard drive into another system, but it just sits at a blinking cursor when it comes time to begin loading Windows in any other system besides the HP its sitting in. Is this some sort of strange security measure?

That's the way I've always done things, and yet my paps has done this a few times. Technically, since 95 you're supposed to be able to just swap. But since I don't consider this clean, I always format and reinstall.

exactly what version of windows is in there? from the size of the hard disk im guessing its either windows 2000 or xp.
if its winxp in there, ditto. esp the oem ones. booting it on a different machine *might* also mess up the WPA. your copy of windows might just end up being deactivated by m$ if they detect that copy of windows is being used on a different computer it was installed on.
the proper way to do it is to boot a linux distro off a live cd (ubuntu etc.) or mini-xp from hiren's boot cd.
if its the ancient dos kernel based windows os-es like 95/98/me yes. but if its the winnt kernel based os-es like 2000/xp, no, it does not necessarily work that way.Comment

True, it doesn't always work, and in my experience it usually doesn't... at least not cleanly. But I would expect Windows to at least try to boot, to get errors and fail, but not get a blinking cursor.

It depends on the cpu and chipset of the two boards. I think what you are seeing is the hard drive controller drivers of the first board are not compatible with the drivers of the other boards. If you have the windows disk, you could boot on it and do a windows repair. The second option is to put it back in the original system and change the hard drive controller drivers to the standard drivers that come with windows, and then when you put it in the other system it will trigger plug & play to load the correct driver. The third and best option is to reload windows from scratch and reload all programs and data.Comment

no you cant really swap drives like that. the only drive swap that was successfully was from and old dell optiplex with a slower p4 to a newer dell optiplex with a faster p4(from on with a xp home key to an xp pro key) with no problem.
and then there is LINUX where you can swap the same HDD from different machine to different machine to different machine 20 times then back to the origin machine and it runs fine on all of them!Things I've fixed: anything from semis to crappy Chinese $2 radios, and now an IoT Dildo....

Try the MBR, but before you do, put it into the original system and install the disk controller drivers for the new system, then set the controller drivers to standard IDE, that should ensure you don't get a stop 7B on the new PC.Comment

I finally got around to trying that and it still didn't get anything but a blinking cursor. Oh, well I'll just start fresh. I installed xp on this system with one of my old clunker drives and it ran great. Got a case of something new weird at work. There is an old 2nd gen Intel i3 in an old “Pizza box” shell that has a small form factor power supply. Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures and model number off it.
Anyway, I get to work and get to look at this computer. Standby LED on the PSU is on, but the computer won't start. Hmm o.k. take the battery out of the main board try again, nothing.
O.k. then… unplug the power supply from the main board and put in a full size ATX PSU (yeeeesss! Exact that blown Powerman IP that I fixed a while back), plug it in and the old...

I'm working on a MacBook Air 2020 (A2337, board 820-02016) and running into a strange USB-C issue. I've gone through quite a bit of testing and part replacement, but I'm stuck — hoping someone here can shed some light.
🛠 Original Issue
The machine initially wouldn't negotiate 20V over USB-C — stuck at 5V.
Diagnosis showed PP1V5_UPC0_LDO_CORE shorted to ground.
I replaced U3100 (UF400) using a donor board (A2179), and the machine powers on fine now.

Hello mates,
I bought this subwoofer a few days ago used and blind and it works erratically, as far as I could see, it has been tampered with, the speaker is not the original one and of 8 Ohm when it should be of 4, and there are some welds like reworked by the boards.
It doesn't have much power (expected more from it) and it distorts if you increase the volume over the middle, maybe it's because of the high impedance of the speaker. The problem is that it has sound when it wants, the led panels all work correctly, you can hear the power relay on power on, but right now... -
Hey ya'll this is my first post on here. I recently aquired a used/broken 2019 mbp 16 a2141 with the 820-01700 board. Seller told me that the laptop needed a new lcd. However upon doing some troubleshooting i found out the lcd is fine.
Laptop boots like a normal, plays chime, touchbar lights up however there is no image on the internal lcd. If i connect and external monitor while its already on, nothing happens and no image is displayed on external. However if i restart or boot the machine while its plugged in, the external then works and a backlight is now visible on the laptop.... -

I got a EIZO CX270 from a friend. He said it doesn't work anymore and wont display any signal or take any OSD inputs. Well, as an aspiring photographer I couldn't say no, could I?
