    Hard disk problem

i have two harddisks and i have a problem where the disk is just making a clicking noise, one drive i know may be damaged mechanically but the other i think is OK

    what could the problem be?

i've taken the hood off one and watched it go and the arm just moves back and forth constantly clicking

sorry its not much of a description

in the bios it picks up the drive correctly

    so whats the dealio yo?!

IBM's by chance?? I've gone through quite a few 'clicker' IBM's....

Throw it away and replace it if its not still under warranty, its toast.

Then you can now throw that disk in the trash

It will be impossible to repair it, dust will have entered it and it is dead for good

A data recovery firm might be able to bring some data back but that is 2000$ and up

Not to bash or anything but exactly why did you open it? You need a grade A clean room to open a harddrive, and let alone actually do anything with it is pretty much impossible, except move the platters to a special machine to sector by sector copy it but like I said that is 2000$ and up...

It's kinda hard to find, but Hitachi has mp3 files of dieing HDDs in the diagnostics section of thier site.

Dead HDDs are good for several things. To take apart and play with. To use for mock-up work when building HDD cages. Last: If you have several of the same brand&type, with the EXACT same number on the logic chip and one dies because the chip got fried by a 5V spike, a good chip can be moved to the dead drive to remove files. The odds of doing this are slim but it has been done with Maxtor Drives. The bad PSU would have to be replaced.

Never drop a drive or it will be killed...I know

          Re: Hard disk problem

well i took it apart as its an old drive i just wanted to play around with, just wondered why it was dead, didnt know that by taking it apart you had to be in a clean room

but it was fun checking it out

what about the pcb thats attached to the disk, would taking that off also kill the disc?

            Hi Enigmatic,

I wouldn't worry about it - sounds like the drive was dead to begin with.

I have quite a bit of experience in opening hard disk drives ... and I've never seen a drive "die" immediately after opening it - it will usually run, often for hours or even days, while accumulating bad sectors at an impressive rate. It is interesting to see, though, and those platters make amazing mirrors!

That's the disk's interface and power supply for the motors... You can remove it without doing any damage, although often those tiny Torx screws can be treacherous...

HDD platters also make great mirror trinkets!!!

                That's a platter from a 4.3gb SCSI seagate cheetah........

and i just ordered another ibm too

If you're looking for an acceptably fast and modern, but also very reliable drive - take a look at the WD Caviar RE series. I've bought nothing but those over the last 18 months or so, and I've been very pleased with them so far.

So, Seagate, WD or Fujitsu... it's like Canon or Nikon, Bosch or Makita all over again.

these came from a guy at the flea market that got them at a police auction.
                                        they were in hpq trays.
i used the drives in my array and sold the empty trays for twice what i paid for the drives.
                                        funny how that works.

Today recieved hp model 17-f100nx laptop with no power.(motherboard=DAY11AMB6E0) after that repaired +1.05v section due to faulty buck converter.after that power issue fixed and laptop turns on.But "no bootable 3f0 error displayed".so then

i checked the connectivity of ribbon=good communication with hard and motherboard

changed hard disk and checked=3f0 error persist

                                          sata power=+5v available

                                          Then checked data capacitors=all good

Then checked data lines path connectivity to pch=all good

                                          reflashed...

                                          Apple Macbook A1707 Hard disk
                                          by Eleways
                                          Hi

I've an Apple macbook A1707 with Hdd defect.

This product don't work with a normal Hard disk, but the hard disk it's a BGA component on the logic board.

                                          My question is:
Can i exchange the hard disk, by desolder the bga Hard disk and replacing this?

Can i replace with a different one (es 500 gb instead of 250 gb)

This Macbook has T1 security check.

                                          Thanks and best regards

                                          Luca

ASUS ROG STRIX B550-I GAMING - M.2_2 port not working correctly with SAMSUNG SSD980 1TB NVME SSD

                                          Hi,

I have an really very weired issue with ASUS ROG STRIX B550-I GAMING.

Some NVME (PCIe) SSD's are not working correctly in the second M.2 socket. An example of it is the SAMSUNG SSD980 1TB NVME SSD.
Some other NVME (I have only smaller ones) disk do work without any problem, also SAMSUNG disks, eg an MZVPV128HDGM-0000.

The behaviour is also really very strange, i.e.:
                                          • The disk shows always up in BIOS - so it is recognized, so far so good
                                          • POST-ing with this disk with fresh Windows 24H2 installation (done in the M.2_1 socket) in the M.2_2 socket
                                          ...

I have an LG Plasma TV 60PM6700 for the past ~12 years.

In the last ~3-4 months I have been having some issues.
                                          1. Problem: It started with random picture disappearing (sound still worked).
Frequency: Happened about once a week.
Solution: Had to turn off TV wait a few seconds before turning it on again.
                                          2. Problem: Then it got worse and the TV started to shut down and when turning on the no picture just sound.
Frequency: Happened about once a week.
Solution: Had to turn off TV wait about 10-20 seconds and turn it on again to solve.
                                          3. Problem: TV shuts down
                                          ...

                                          Macbook 820-3115 Missing hard Disk

                                          Hello,

I have a Macbook 820-3115 with the question mark sign.

                                          Replaced the cable.
                                          Tried a New SSD.

                                          Issue Persists.

Cleaned the and Soldered the Connector of the Hard Disk on the board. It worked once and then again the same.
Went ahead and replaced the connector. Still the same.

What can be at fault here.
