    Re: Fastest free antivirus

There's nothing wrong with MSE. It offers good enough protection and doesn't use a lot of RAM, but it does have some flaws, including slow scan speeds and not protecting against modern "scareware"

      Re: Fastest free antivirus

Believe it or not, I find that the most efficient of all antivirus programs is Norton. I couldn't even get it to slow down an old Socket A PC.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

No free antivirus programs (and very few paid ones) seem to stop scareware. I see it on PCs with everything including AVG, MSE, Avast, McAfail and Norton.

True, however what new attacks are you vunrable to if you cant visit that infected page? I admit its not foolproof protection but its in my opinion one of the best free ones out there.

No issues with MSE here. I use it on all my systems, my family's systems and at a non-profit I do consulting for. I use the AV built into the Shavlik patch management system (Vipre engine) at my main work, and it can slow things down a bit.
I was an AVG fan for years, but somewhere around ver 6 or 7 it started sucking.

Friends don't let friends use Norton!

                                  Re: Fastest free antivirus

I currently have only 1 computer with an AV, and that's my computer I use for downloading stuff. It's an old 750 MHz AMD Slot A beast with 512 MB of RAM. Avast! doesn't seem to slow it down that much during boot up as compared to other programs I've used in the past (on PCs with very similar characteristics). The only problem I really had with Avast! is that sometimes when I pop in a CD in the CD drive, Avast will try to scan the entire CD before anything can be executed from it (which, as you can imagine, takes an insanely long amount of time). This temporarily freezes the Window that is supposed to view the drive and it's really annoying me sometimes. But that's really my only gripe with Avast! Other than that, it's been pretty good. I especially like the boot-sector scan option. It's been there since the early versions of Avast! and has always working well.
In terms of performance, when browsing through folders, there is some noticeable lag. It's not too much though, more or less the same as other AV programs. I'm just a little picky since I don't use an AV on my other computers and I'm used to folders opening instantaneously.

In the past, I used to use AVG Free before (versions 7 and 8). Around when 8.5 came out, I dropped AVG Free because it started taking way too much RAM. Another thing that has always pissed me with AVG is that if you open a folder with lots of .exe files, it really can take a minute or two before any of the contents of the folder get displayed. I do keep a small collection of software installation files in my shared downloads folder, so you can see why I ditched AVG.

That's very odd. I remove it from PCs all the time at work, and the end result is always the same - system runs so much faster. Ever see a tired old P4 with 1 GB of RAM try to run norton? Enough to make you wanna cry

Of course, a few had older versions of norton that had also decided to fill up the program files/common files/symantec shared folder with so much crap that it literally filled the hard drive, then complained that it had no more space to download its crap into.

                                      I hate norton

After installing Java Runtime, I have some strange errors on some of my computers. Windows Explorer becomes unresponsive and then strange message pops up claiming that too many 16 bit programs are running.
There aren't any 16 bit programs on these computers. The OS is Windows 7 x86 SP1 fully updated. There aren't any 16 bit programs running, nor installed. No active instances of NTVDM or anything like this. Seems like it's a problem with UAC/consent.exe/ when trying to elevate the execution of certain programs. But the information about the issue is scarce. Is there anybody around here who...

The Best and Fastest BIOS Flasher for Modding Under $2
                                            by lapot2
Recently, the Raccoon Flash Explorer programmer has appeared.

It allows you to flash BIOS chips from any device without installing programs and drivers, and also very quickly make small changes without a long rewrite of the entire memory to change a few bytes.

Very easy to use and intuitive, even a housewife can handle it.

You can use absolutely any system binary file editor (HxD, WinHex, etc…) on any operating system, the possibilities are not limited by the ugly built-in editor like other programmers.

It has full cross-platform support, works...

I wonder is there some way to do faster response to stop deliver accumulated voltage from PSU (rather that panicaly unplug AC), and to immediately shutdown all of dedicated switcing PS on motherboard and put PSU back to standby state.

Is grounding power good PG good idea, because it is on output of PSU? Will that affect on futher generating...

hi all, so i have an acer XC-605 desktop which i believe had a bad bios flash.
i setup an ssd for it and it didnt get recognized in the bios so i attempted a bios update with the provided gui from acers website (going from P11.A2 to P11.B4). i rebooted and it seemed the bios update was successful but when i turned off the pc, it would no longer turn on properly and gave me one long beep (fan goes on, maintains power but no display etc, seems to fail post).

i tried a bunch of stuff like reseating ram etc and tried to reflash from usb but since nothing worked i eventually just...

Not sure where to post this, thought this might be the best place

                                            Tivo setup:
Tivo 1 - Tivo HD, Monthly service (ancient, over 10 years old)
Tivo 2 - Tivo HD, Monthly service (ancient, over 10 years old)
Tivo 3 - Tivo HD XL, eBay Tivo with Lifetime service (newer but still old)

Yes I am the idiot that paid monthly for all these years. I found a broken Tivo HD XL with lifetime service on eBay for $40 (Tivo 3), I bought it, it was a bad power supply, I re-capped it, good as new. So the plan was to cancel Tivo 1 and use Tivo 3 in it's stead. So I...
