Re: Samsung LCD TV has Very Bright Picture - LN40A500T1FXZA
Interesting. One of my Samsungs used to do that for about 1 minute, a few times a week at random. Not quite that bright though.
Hasn't done it for a quite a while now.

Re: Wife's PC killed by virus
If a Windows server is crashing, it's either got a hardware problem, or crap software installed.
I haven't seen a Windows server crash in over 5 years. Last one was when a shitty Symantec product BSODed the server when I tried to restart the service.
Hate MS all you want, the server OSes (I have many 2003, and 2008R2 at work)
are very stable.
I'm no MS fanboy, I have Windows and Linux each have their place.
Though MS is pissing me off lately. Ping is STILL broken in Win7 Win 8 and Server...

Re: APC Smart-UPS float voltage experiment
Speaking of APC UPS battery life, keeping the unit cold really helps.
I have an RM3000somethingerother in one of my server racks. It sits at the bottom in a constant 18degree C air stream. Finally had to replace the batteries after 7 years.
An external one that sits beside the rack at room temperatures only gets about 4 years.
Another in the switch room at 28 degrees gets 2-3 years tops.

Re: D-Link DIR-615 B2
I'm running 2 switches and a cable modem off of an Astron RM-35.
Overkill, but reliable...

Re: APC Back-UPS NS 1250
Interestingly, EEVBlog just did a teardown video of a SmartUPS 2200RM (considerably better quality than their cheaper ones)
I have one in a rack that gets nothing higher than 18 degree C air and the batteries last about 6 years, compared to room temperature units that go 2-3 years, and the one that lives under my desk at home which is in a warm spot averages 1.5 - 2 years between batteries.

Re: HMMM....What could this be....
Yup. Standard procedure for most decent RAID controllers when the battery gets low.
I have a server in my rack at work that needs a new battery (the 1-week power outage killed it) and it's not performing too well at the moment.
Have the replacement on my desk (friggin thing was $60.00) just need to schedule an outage......

Re: Laptop Upgrades revisited
I'm still partial to the Dell Latitude series. Mainly because that's our standard at work, and I can get 3 year old units for dirt cheap. I know their reliability, and parts can be had easily on ebay.
One of the best buys (no pun intended) out there on the used market. I consider laptops a lot like cars, if you cna stand one thats a couple years old, buying used saves a ton of $.
If the 630 was too heavy, you won't like the weight of the 6500. The 4300 is lighter, smaller screen though.

Re: I think I got a bad Hakko 808
Sorry, not sure I follow you on that one.
Knowing your previous posts on equipment, you probably mean Hakko is a toy and I should only have a $2000.00 Pace station...

Re: I think I got a bad Hakko 808
Got the replacement today. What a difference!
This thing is the cat's ass. Did a quick test-desolder of 2 caps on a monitor pcb I had laying around. It heated up fast, sucked that solder out like <naw not going there>
really well.

Re: No screws visible, how to crack open Acer LCD unit?
For most monitors, I remove the stand and any visible screws, then gently pry the front bezel off starting in the middle of one of the sides. Once you get one a clip or 2 loose you can continue the brute force method, or use a small plastic tool (I use a guitar pick) to properly release the clips. once you get going it'll become clearer how it's done.
Be careful around the buttons, some need unplugging.
Once the bezel is off the rest will become obvious.
You'll be surprised how little there is holding...

Re: what software is used to mark jpg?
Almost any image editor can do it. From Photoshop/Gimp to MS Paint.
If you need a decent free tool to do it, try paint.net
Edit. Dangit, Ben beat me by a few seconds.

Re: Why would anyone get a desktop anymore
Yep. My server is still a Quad 6600 and my desktop is a Core 2 duo 6600.
Still more than enough....

Re: Why would anyone get a desktop anymore
Holy crap, I have 2 long haired dogs, and I only clean my desktop out every 4 months.
Maybe try cleaning your house once in a while!
As for why desktops? Performance, flexibility (customizing a notebook is pretty limited), reliability, etc. etc.

Re: I think I got a bad Hakko 808
So my suspicion was correct. It was returned to Fry's today, and they apologized.
Apparently that one was supposed to be sent back for repair, and somehow got put back in stock. My relative is shipping me a new one.
I doubt that it was deliberate. Putting defective stock back in with good would just have it come back again, so it was likely an honest mistake. Unfortunately the person picking it up didn't know what it was supposed to look like, or have in the box.

Re: Dell Precision 470
Well, it's not that chip but it may be something in the neighborhood.
Pin 6 measures 1.8 ohms to ground. Pulled the chip, chip measures ok, pin 6 still 1.8ohms to gnd on the board. Pulled the FET that's connected to pin 6, same.
There are 2 bypass caps and 2 electrolytics all in parallel that all read 1.8 ohms. I pulled one ceramic, it's fine, the other is on the top side between the electros, so I'll need to pull them allto check the ceramic. Or it could be anything else
