    Re: Vista or Vistrash?

All my systems are dual core, but I still use XP.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

      Re: Vista or Vistrash?

Vista was ok for the times I used it, but definitely on the slow side. On the other hand, I installed Windows 7 on a customer's older XP machine and it ran quite nicely. A bit slower than XP, but still faster than Vista on a newer machine.

        Another audio head!

You're right, xp is getting long in the tooth, and I used to run win2k here, but certain programs are, shall we say, 'rigged' to require either DLLs or regkeys that are only present in xp and newer.

Whatcha use for audio? CEP2? It'll always be Cool Edit Pro here, not happy with what aDUHbee did to Syntrillium. No rotten apples, either, what with their x86 architecture/lockout chip and the 'stevie boy is god' thing.

From about 2004 to 2008, I had an Intel D865MB with a 2GHZ hotscott/512MB RAM. I busted my ass for a 'nice' setup with 98SE/98LITE *without* internet exploder and the shell from 95B. What an audio monster! Hundreds of CDs and a few dozen DVDs, at least till those 4 small caps by the northbridge started going and stability suffered. Should've recapped it... I still regret junking it. I fell for the 'who wants to put money into a P4 system' line.

I've never seen that, or even heard of it before.
I'm no MS fanboy, but I really don't see much difference between XP and Vista other than Vista is a bit faster and they moved stuff around.

They just don't need all the garbage that vista and 7 have bloated into them.

i dint fall for that line thankfully besides the fact that it was cheaper to have it recapped and save 1500 $ on a new system the Pentium 4 i have still runs good and i picked up a slighly newer one for 50$ whare i got this one.

                  Re: Vista or Vistrash?

If I wasn't in as bad a mood I was that afternoon, it wouldn't have been junked. Ya follow me?

What an irony though- all the systems I've recapped since have been P4's, like my old system is coming back to taunt/haunt me.

When those junk boxes are $200 at whalemart, it's quite amusing to watch the sheeple burn their money.

As far as the 'false positives' I mentioned above, that capability did exist, undocumented or otherwise. I'm sorry, I don't have the link to show you. I found out about three years ago. That information certainly did NOT come from snopes.

Something about windows defender, after a 'push' upgrade to wmp10, gaining the ability to compare file names, sizes, hashes and checksums to a database. They wanted to roll it out by playing the old 'copyright' card, hence the tying it to wmp instead of a disservice pack.

As it was, all executables would be scanned upon launch, and before control of the app/process was given to the user, a scan was performed.

Oh! The signature of your copy of coolpro2.exe matches one the BSA planted in the 'ripped off software database.' Never mind that you PAID for it, we know better and are deleting it for you- you helpless schmuck user.

Imagine the CPU power- all processes were also to be scanned every 10 or 15 minutes, IIRC.

                      Re: Vista or Vistrash?

I'm on and old Dell P4 box with one gig of ram, and a 2.4 cpu. I do own Vista Home Premium and did install it more than one time to make sure it sucked...Guess what. it sucked each and every time. These Dell 4550 units have never been known to be speedy and Vista brought it to its knees. I've also played around with Win7. It did much better with the Win7 OS but even after a month of trying I still was lost in the land of Oz with this OS. "I'm sorry Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that".... With all of this said, the system runs just fine with Windows Xp Home SP3. I like an OS that is simple, and to the point. Xp is just this way. I'm also free to wreck the OS if I do stupid things. Now I know my system is long in the tooth and someday I will have to get both the wife and I some newer PC's. It looks like I better learn Win7 at some point so I can teach the wife something when the time comes. This is sort of like going from Win 3.11 to Win95 I guess but much worse! Wah wah wah! I want my Win Xp! I don't want no new thing since the new thing seems to SUCK! Xp Home!
"It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so."

There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.

Never happened here. Perhaps i also turned off the nag to turn it back on? Stock Vista was naggy and you had to figure for yourself how to quiet it down. Stock Win7 is naggy but they tell you WHERE you need to go to turn the darn things off.

Audio guy here too. Never had trouble with either Vista or Win7 when it came to latencies.

What the hell's wrong with apple? Oh, I forgot- now that they are gaining on the user base, they gotta 'appeal' to the mass market, aka walmart users. Paradoxically, they then overcharge for mutated intel hardware, making their customers think the artificially inflated price puts them in 'the club.'

                                  Re: Vista or Vistrash?

i skipped vista completely. tried it out with a pirated copy back in the days. looked kinda nice but that's about it.

now i'm on Win7 x64 and apart from some stuff not being where it's supposed to / where i'm used to find it, it's ok.

UAC doesn't nag too much (mostly with older software or stuff that modifies (log-)files), stable and not really slow nor a memory hog.

the only thing kinda pissing me off is the search. you simply can't use the good ol' DOS commands anymore.

like searching for pdf files. on XP, you would search for *.pdf and only get files with the .pdf extension.
on 7, it simply searches for everything with "pdf" in it, completely ignoring the rest.

that's why i'm now using a third party tool called "everything". database powered searching. with instant results while typing.. and it supports the old commands

                                  http://www.voidtools.com

i would still use XP MCE if it wasn't for the damn RAM limit..

edit: fun fact: windows 7 isn't really windows "7"...

Well I'm in the position where we have to upgrade. I don't want to but the wife PC can't even do the SEE2 instruction set. I figure as long as she gets a new one I should too. My old P4 is fine in my world but her HP Compaq sucks. I will put her old PC on the back burner for and upgrade. What is wrong with getting a new PC because the wife needs one????

There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.

Personally i love windows 7 in fact i loved windows vista alpha when i was testing it. To me it got more unstable as the release came about alpha was actually decent then beta and RC was always crashing for me. I stuck to it and with sp1 it got better with updates coming out the stability issues were solved but by then people didn't want anything to do with it and windows 7 had been announced. At that point i gave up on it and went back to windows xp. I had windows 7 beta for testing and yah it's like vista service pack 4 with some shiny new paint. The stability issues are gone for the most part and it's much faster running then vista ever was.

+1 agree with you again on this one now, best about everything (the tool) is that u dont need the installer just grab the exe and it'll do the job... and i think the couple files it creates (i think is its db and some config) is worth it...

bout w7 i think i once heard the excuse to call it 7 it was cause it was suppoused to take 7secs to 'load'... dont know how accurate/true is that

                                          peace.
