    Re: Vista or Vistrash?

I was forced to upgrade to Windows 7 since I built my quad core rig I wanted a 64 bit OS and finding XP 64 at the time was problematic.

After the inital cussing and annoyances with the new interface once you get the hang of it it's not that bad. The new start menu and renaming objects in the control panel in particular pissed me off.

Vista was a mistake an OS released too soon. A ship with so many holes in it they could never be patched before it sank. Windows 7 is windows Vista 2.0.

I loved how M$ put their tail between their legs with their Mohave commercials. No amount of advertising smoke can disguise the truth.

XPs clock is ticking an OSes life isn't determined by how long you want to keep it but how long software developers want to support it.

For example if Adobe stopped making Flash or Acrobat compatible with XP tomorrow eventually the old XP compatible software wouldn't support new documents and your Internet use would be crippled as a result. You'd then be inclined to either find a third party substitute application or switch your OS.

Just an example of how developers have some control over the life of an OS.

Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either.

        Re: Vista or Vistrash?

I repair lots of laptops with Vista. The vista recovery NEVER works and the os is a nightmare to trouble shoot.

I sometimes wounder if Microsoft intentionally created vista (bad) with windows 7 already on hand for 1: to get everyone to forget about xp and for 2: to get everyone to run to 7.
Microsoft at least owes everyone who fell for the vista trick a free UPGRADE to xp.
        Yes I said UPGRADE!

And from all my experience: windows 7 is not much better than vista!

Well Xp just works. It can do what most users need to do and it was simple. Billy couldn't put up with this and most of all just maybe his personal earnings were starting to fall off. I don't want Vista or Se7en on my PC but its the way of the world now. Before somebody says use Linux just let me say I don't want any flavor of those unfinished OS's on here ether.

It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.

Are you M$ lovers sure that's a sign of good OS when it it not able to boot after swapping USB mouse? I never ever encountered so crappy behaviour under XP.

And they're also hapless, gullible, and foolish enough to fall for the 'complete kernel rewrite' bullshit as well. As I said above, if that were true, how come you can switch drivers between shitsta and seven?!

i don't think vista is all that bad, when i ran it on a quad core it ran fine, also i had no problem running the hacked tiny vista on a p4 2.6 with a fx5200, aero worked fine it was a bit slow. however since i got xp, 7 and mac on my PC what can i bitch about lol

                        Re: Vista or Vistrash?

There is a lot of newer games out there that might have problems with windows xp, some games like halo 2 actually require dx10, which you're supposed to be able to hack install on xp, but never officially, I certainly never got it working

for a technicians box xp is def. what you want to use. but if you want a badass gaming system and be able to take advantage of newer hardware (like the 12 gigs of ram my i7 has), then 7 is best for you. I only use 7 (pro) on my main gaming box and it has been superb without question, eeeh minus a few small problems with a wireless laser microsoft mouse, that actually many people actually have with 7 64-bit also

xp is a great OS. and micro$oft actually now had unlimited activations for any OEM key if you're using an OEM disk. so you can take a key off any home (or pro depending on what you installed) sticker and use it, and activate it with microsofts blessing no hacking required. Microsoft has locked down key limitations on vista and 7. I think after vista came out, microsoft kept still getting bombarded with activation calls for xp, and microsoft wanted to focus more moola on the newer OS's, so they just kind of said screw it lets give everyone free activations (except on known pirated keys). Trying to go with a pirated version of vista/7 however is very different. M$ releases patches for counter all the crack attempts. I know several people (myself EXCLUDED) who pirated 7 and kept running into problems down the road. after this I just kind of said, its not worth trying to pirate.

in the end, 7 is a lot like XP, in that its a updated version of a previousely released new kernel. Windows 2000 is windows 5.0, XP is 5.1. Vista is NT 6.0, 7 is 6.1

oh yeah if you don't know yet, M$ released SP1 for 7 2 days ago. didn't make much difference, and the 64-bit redist for SP1 is 909M

Oh c-o-m-e on! You really think I'd ever buy such a crap?

As for the SP1, yeah, before that hibernation worked at least without mouse. Oh, there are still peripheral problems even after how many, 3 years since Vista? I am not surprised, M$ was ever able to fuck things up anyway. Not it does not work at all. Trying to get rid of that stuff was just about restarting but guess what, IT WAS STILL THERE. Of course restoration was half-fail but OK it's out now. Hibernation still does not work

I fuck this, I want that only for games anyway. I'm getting Arch Linux ASAP, this M$ crap is driving me crazy every day I have to use it.

indeed.. especially cause you don't need to think about those stupid f%&§% security access restrictions..
i ran into that problem the first day i used win7 .. plugged my external HDD in and couldn't access it at all .. "files on this harddisk origin from a different computer. access has been restricted".
I could see all files and directories, but trying to open any file just gave errors. i had to manually set the security crap to "owner: everyone" to make it work.. wtf

meh.. still no problems on my 2nd box. modified BIOS (SLIC). Win7 thinks it's a Dell OEM box..

@behemot: hibernation works fine here and always did. problems with it are caused by crappy drivers or incompatible peripherals (mostly USB crap not supporting sleep mode to which they get set before the hibernation process starts)

What do you mean by incompatible? OS/drivers should be compatible with HW not otherwise. Program is the thing you can rewrite, you couldn't remake mouse. So XP x86-64 had no hibernation at all, here it's fucked (and I am not interested in where the fault is - it's M$'s work).

Anyway everything was working in XP, then Vista came and so many peripherals broke. Only I see the obvious? I'd say it is not problem with the USB stuff, what do you think?

just had a neighbors toshiba laptop in for delousing.get this!vista on 512m ram! no wonder it was slow.and then it got crapped up with malware.it was a home shooping channel special she paid way too much for.7 and 2 gigs woke it up.
and as for 7 there is a thing called remove wat.
xp also had the ability to protect files of other users.you would simply take ownership.or use linux to copy them.

too bad all WGA (not WPA) stuff is blocked with this (including MS Security Essentials, which is what i like to use for customer computers. they see it's from MS so they will think its good.. and it actually does the job reasonably well)

works fine with a BIOS mod though (SLIC tabe edited into the bios)
(plus you only need to do that once lol..)

edit: if you start talking about linux (which is kinda off topic here): i've got OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.5 on my 2nd comp (C2D E4300, Gigabyte G33M-DS2R, 4GB RAM, 8800GTS 320MB)
that's also off topic. (and i dont need 500+ page books to configure it so that everything works the way i want it..)

haha senic, I love your avatar, though I don't know why you have it though, abit is pretty much dead, as is epox

I have had no trouble with windows 7 waking out of sleep from USB (Asus P6T Deluxe V2), I do it all the time. There might be some bios issue with your motherboard and higher sleep states that 7 can reach and xp cannot

                                            Hi all,

It's gonna be a long intro, so please buckle in, as it's a problem that's been bugging me for several days now. Thanks in advance.

So, I have 2 modems/routers, whatever the proper nomenclature is, one from ISP and one mine. I want to power them via USB-C rather then their original mains adapters (for reasons, that are hard to explain to sane people). Both routers come with 12V/3A mains adapters.
For this purpose I acquired USB-C charger with 250W and 5 ports, 2 of which can supply max 20V/3A. Since 12V isn't a standard PD voltage option (and to future proof,...
