Re: Recap a single bad cap?

You don't want either KZJ or KZG.
Those two don't like heat at all.
They use the same electrolyte and that's their problem.
    As to your question:
KZJ handles more ripple and has lower ESR that KZG.

KZG is comparable to Rubycon MBZ, Sanyo WG, and in 10mm Panasonic FJ
KZJ is comparable to Rubycon MCZ.
Panasonic FJ in 8mm are between KZG and KZJ.

Yup, Panasonic FJ is ultra-low ESR, and seems to handle heat better - I haven't encountered a single failure to date. The 1800/16/10mm is a very good universal 10mm motherboard cap, which can be used on any rail and just about any location.

I see... The KZG that has blown is 6.3V 820uF.. Right up near near the ram slot.. Any suggestions on replacement??

At one time or another I've gotten caps from all three of these places.
The one in the middle will probably get them into your hands quickest.

Thanks for the info guys.. Any recommendations for mini caps? The 1 that is blown is very small in height.. Not much higher than the ram slot..

                    Thanks..

Not a good spot for KZG.

I see only a 20 pin power supply in one of those pics which means it could be old. I would check to see if any caps are bad in the power supply which may be causing excessive stress and heat to the mainboard.

I checked the PSU and they all seemed fine.. Rubycons on the input.. I don't have equipment to actually test them.. The heat is caused from folding proteins all day long... I pulled out a ram stick but added a gpu.. Correct with 20 pin.. Its a Delta Electronics 300w\350w I think.. I diddn't like it having to power a pentium d it came with ended up swapping witha buddy to get cash etc for other comps..There is a Celeron D in there atm..

The caps I got were these.. Ordered from The Cap King (http://www.thecapking.com/)
                              Rubycon MCZ 820uf 6.3v 8mm
                              Rubycon part number: 6.3MCZ820M8X12
                              K vent on top
                              A0826 105 T0902 105

Pretty much perfect sized replacement.. No more visibly bad caps at the moment..

                              Thansk All..

                                I'm pretty sure mine was.

                                  Only some are.
The reason for the added wires is to pass more amps.
Some boards use the 24pin for compatibility with PSU plugs but don't actually need the added amps.

Recently I was given for free a Sony RCD-W3 with the following symptoms, CD recorder drive reads CDs without any issues (haven't tested recording function yet because I don't intend to burn CDs on that machine) but the reader drive shows disc error after some seconds of it trying to read CD. Tried both CD-Rs and commercial audio CDs with same results.

First thing to do was to clean the lens but that didn't change anything. Googling the issue revealed that this is a common issue on several Sony CD recorder machines and the culprit is SMD electrolytic caps located on the PCB bellow...

Here’s another motherboard that needed a full recap: an ASUS P5GC-MX.
This one was gifted to me some years ago by user Pentium 4, along with a few other goodies. It actually came in working order with no bulging or leaking caps. However, I noted there were United Chemicon KZG caps everywhere on the motherboard. The CPU VRM output (CPU V_core) was the only exception: it had only 2x KZG. The rest was 6x UCC TMV 4V 680 uF caps… which aren’t any good news either.

So here is what the motherboard looked like with its original caps:

                                    CPU VRM area up close…...

is it ok to replace a dual output transformer with two single output transformers?

Hi, some prestory: I was repairing an amplifier - a "Phil Jones Bass". It had some bad capacitors an a faulty power switch. Easy job. However upon putting it back together I screwed up. The connector from the 15V-0V-15V from the transformer is identical to the audio ouput from the preamp board to the poweramp board. I ended up putting +-15VAC into the preamp outputs frying some traces on the circuit board along with the power transformer The transformer is shorted. It blows the fuse immediately even with no load on the secondary.

                                    Now that's a challenge - luckily...

Is it no harm to replace with capacitor without ripple current rating?

When I tried to repair LG 29 inch CRT TV, I found that the ESR value of samyoung SMS capacitor(160v 2.2uf), which is very close to D1879 transistor, is 6 ohm.

Judging from above ESR Meter Table,I think It is necessary to replace this sms capacitor. So I visited local electronics shop, and I purchased 160v 2.2uf rubycon YK capacitor.
But when I browse through rubycon YK datasheet,I found that there is no ripple current rating for 160v 2.2uf specification. But On the contrary, I found 39 mA ripple current rating for 160v 2.2uf SMS capacitor.
                                    Rubycon YK DataSheet (b...

Opinions/Advice on Do/Should I replace ALL Electrolytic Capacitors on old equipment?

I've just been repairing some (very) old speakers with a loud hum that occurred as soon as you powered them on regardless if any actual audio is played through them. I work in a School so it's 99% likey that the Teachers have hardly ever turned the power off on them for well over 10+ years.

As you can see the top large capacitor on the right has a bulge on the top so defincately needs replacing. As the one next to it is exactly the same capacity and voltage I planned to replace them both.

What is your advice/opinion on whether or not on old(er)...
