    The FL was near the HSF outflow side, about the hottest location in any SFF - no surprise that it failed. However, all the Rubycons (MBZ?) near it seem to be fine - as expected.

    For lower core losses, you may want to go with Micrometals T130-52 (green/blue) with Al=75 (more turns for any given inductance than -45, thus increasing resistive (Cu) losses). You may be able to use thicker wire or bifilar winding to compensate for the increased resistive losses. Bifilar or Trifilar is better due to skin-effect in the conductor.

    Elna is indeed very good for audio, but some of their allegedly premium audio series measure worse on linearity than some of their regular professional-grade series.

    IMHO, in approximate descending order of linearity (for audio):

    Elna RSE LongLife (discontinued over a decade ago)

    Elna RW5
    Elna RJJ
    Elna RJH
    Elna RJ5
    Elna RJ4
    Elna RJ3

    NCC LXFs were known to leak electrolyte out of the bottom bung and fail. LXZ, LXV, KZE or KY should be durable replacements. In a pinch, KMG and KMH should work.

    I'd guess that it's an APFC circuit failure - the APFC-boosted primary voltage may be out-of-spec and too high. You may also want to replace the avalanche diode in the snubber circuit of the TNY278PN - something like a P6KE200 or similar should work.

    The probable reason it didn't pop when initially powered up is that the APFC boost becomes active only after PS-ON is activated. Until then, it had a lower primary voltage and the +5Vsb auxiliary flyback switcher was perfectly happy with it.

    Avalanche protection/clamping diodes can encounter cumulative damage over time, and fail eventually. If it fails short, the switcher will fail almost immediately, since the inductance of the flyback trafo is shunted, thus there is no current limit. If it fails open, the switcher may still fail after a while, since there is no effective snubbing of the turn-off spike from the leakage inductance.

    Funky - seems to be Delta OEM, or at least shares the main trafo part number with Delta. If it had been built by Delta, it should not have failed easily, but of course, things do fail occasionally on monolithic flyback switchers exposed to spikes, surges, etc.

    I had to use whatever Japanese caps I had in hand that would fit in the space available (10mm and 8mm at most of the secondary locations). There's a 2200uF/16v/10mm Taicon HH that I have in stock, but was unsure of its reliability compared to Pansaonic FJ. The 3300uF/10mm Teapo on the +5Vsb is hard to find a replacement for unless I downsize the value to 2200uF.

    There may not be enough space in the Corsair CX... units for a 450v/105c cap - choices are limited, but there's a Samxon HP(M) 220uF/450v/105c cap that will fit - it's in the tall and thin form-factor:

    I got an SS-400ET which was functioning fine despite its ~2013 initial sale date. All rails were in spec, and no visible cap failures (mostly OST RLS and one Teapo on the secondary). Nevertheless, I decided to recap whatever caps for which I had spares handy.

    Primary APFC boost 220uF/400V/85c NCC -> 220uF/450V/105c Yageo (not really necessary - if it survived a decade, it's probably not going to die now. However, I decided to add a margin of overvoltage safety as per Momaka's experiments with his Enermax....

    I've seen this happen before. The metal integrated heat-spreader varies in height between Socket 939 and Socket AM2/2+. It looks like the HSF is interchangeable between the two, but the difference in the IHS height sometimes increases the stress in the plastic retaining bracket when the HSF is locked, causing the tab to snap on occasion. You can replace the whole assembly from a dead or flaky mobo if available.

    There's an alternate heat-pipe stacked-fin cooler which uses the cabinet airflow, instead of a mounted fan, to cool...

    I'm seeing 85c GP caps in a lot of these PSUs, including Corsair, Coolermaster and so on. In some instances (Cooler Master MWE-series v2) there is space to install a larger diameter, higher-spec'ed cap, but in some (Corsair CX) there isn't space - one has to stay with 85c, and the same modest values like 220uF/400v.

    The CM6800 is widely used because it is a combo PFC + PWM controller - it does everything required on the primary side, so it saves space as well as costs. However, it is used on higher-end...

    Panasonic FC is/was available in 470uF/25v/8mm, if you still trust it - should be fine for a linear regulator. Even better is NCC KZE in 470uF/25v/8mm, which I stockpiled some 8-9 years ago, foreseeing just this kind of application, especially in SFF PSUs.

    BTW, there's an NCC KZE 220uF/35v/8 mm, Japanese production in green sleeve, which I stockpiled for audio use about the same time about a decade ago, which also has its uses as a startup cap or similar.

    Thanks - I'm in a 220-240 VAC region. As noted earlier, +5Vsb is working now, just the main converter doesn't start. I'm OK even if it delivers 50% power reliably, so will take a look at your adventures with the Enermax.

    Edit: I have the SCK054 thermistor as well, but just perfunctorily checked that it had continuity and reinstalled it - perhaps it had gone high-Z or open as well, will check.

    Same issue - Corsair CX500 with the primary Panasonic 220uF/400v blown. I pulled it, removed the APFC heatsink and checked the 2 MOSFETs (13N50P - 13A, 500v) and the rectifier (STTH8S06D - 8A, 600V). One MOSFET and the rectifier were shorted. I removed the dead MOSFET, and replaced the shorted rectifier with a 5A. 600V ultra-fast rectifier. Also replaced a shorted 1N5406 3A rectifier in series in the same circuit. Fuse was blown, replaced with the same rating (T6.3). Primary bridge rectifier was fine. Replaced the primary cap...

    Yup, 2nd- and 3rd-gen dual-core branded SFFs and minitowers can be had for the price range mentioned by Televizora - about $50 or lower used. If you're willing to do some assembly/mobo/HDD swaps etc., you can get H81 boards with Haswell dual-cores for even less, for transplanting into C2D boxes. G20xx and G32xx are great little proccys for the price.

    I agree that the main use for IA32 today is for legacy stuff - could be E-CAD tools, gaming, or driving some legacy kit like a PROM programmer or...

    While I do have legacy systems with PIIIs in sporadic use, they're all Coppermine or Tualatin (more recent than Katmai). I have Athlon 32 T'bird and Thoroughbred XP boxes, but running older OSes (RH9 and so on, with no net connectivity). The direct impact to me is limited for now, but I suppose the writing is on the wall for i686 and IA32 in general - it's headed for EOL, and migration to AMD64 is inevitable.

    Edit: I think all the (very few) Core Solo SKUs were x86-64 - Merom/Conroe single cores,...

    It doesn't quite count as a system in continuous use, since I haven't used the board for some ~15 years, but I pulled out a DFI AM33-EC Socket-A mobo from my stash, plugged in a T-bird 1.4 GHz (not officially supported), 128 MB of PC133 SDRAM - and it posted and passed Memtest86+ just fine today. In its era, I ran RedHat 7.3 on it and used it as my primary development/build machine for a while.

    The board and proccy are some 19+ years old. I recapped the board in 2006, and then a few more caps c.2015, but...
