    Will this recap work ?

So I brought a ibm eserver 225 off ebay it has a mixture of nichicon hm panny fj and ucc kzg, as I was looking aorund I saw that some of the caps were not soldered through the board but to the top copper pads on the surface, I was just wandering will this work or should I remove the board and resolder them ?
    The server works fine btw.

Someone may have done a repair job? If the date codes on the those capacitors that stand up are different from the others, then you have a good indication that someone did a repair job.

If it isn't too much trouble you might want to pull it and inspect the bung to make sure it's a legitimate Panasonic capacitor. I know Hermei uses Panasonic's vent stamp. It'll function like that, the ESR will just be a little bit higher

It's not done properly, but it's not too bad either. I'd say it's fine though.

Agreed. Either it's not an FJ, or someone has recapped it with fake caps. Real FJs are black with gold markings

Panasonic M series (general purpose 85°C) uses that color scheme.

Also, having the caps raised off the board and soldered like that makes me think the board was damaged while removing the old caps and that was the only way they could get it to connect to the correct trace.

They appear to be genuine and I tested them with lcr meter at work and they seem perfectly in specification.
I re-soldered them all works fine.

Ah. It's an M series, not FJ. These are not suitable for use on a motherboard.

That doesn't mean much. Even the worst-of-the-worst capacitors like Sacon FZ would measure OK when they came from the factory. Besides, an LCR meter won't generally test ESR which is more of a concern, especially on motherboards.

The real test is how long they last, and this won't be very long for low grade capacitors, fakes, or general purpose ones (even if they are high quality) when used in circuits where Low ESR is really needed.

I know but I have seen fake caps that claim to be a certain value and aren't, any way I will replacing them with nichicon hz as these aren't the correct esr.

Got around to recapping this board, used sanyo wx works fine had to keep one of the capacitors floating as there is a capacitor lead blocking the hole and I cant get it out with out ruining the trace so I had to keep that one floating but it works fine.
                                    Pictures showing the new capacitors.

I just read the whole thread. Seems like someone went to a lot of trouble to do a half-assed job? Did the one blocked lead whole cause the whole situation? I got the wrong caps part, and I don't really understand how a broken lead in the pc board is a permanent situation (desoldering iron?), but I still don't understand why they are setting those caps high off the motherboard like that as it seems to me that it would have been easier to solder them all the correct way on the back-side of the board, so at this point after reading the thread I'm "wtf?" and would appreciate a forensic analysis of how this motherboard came to this condition.

Jonny, i've seen it before and even recommended on this forum. The person who originally recapped the board possibly didn't have a decent enough iron to remove the old caps. They are either cut or pulled of the board leaving the legs to solder to.
