Here's how my voltages status during various conditions (refer to attached pics) :

(1) First pic ("01.jpg") - under normal CPU load, just some downloads running (FreshDownload & BitComet).

(2) Second pic ("02.jpg") - during files transfer from PC harddisk to external USB 2.0 portable harddisk. I just managed to get about 2.0MB/s (around 1.9-2.1MB/s) on a USB 2.0 connection.

(3) Third pic ("03.jpg") - an alphanumeric keygen running while FreshDownload is building (and moving) output (completed) 215MB file from TEMP directory in drive C: to destination dir in drive D: (same disk). This is quite a high disk activity, I think.

(4) Fourth pic ("04.jpg") - the condition after the previous action (1 minute later).

-Note that the rating for my Pentium 3 1000EB is 1.76V. I noticed that while Core, +3.3V, & +12V tend to rise when the CPU load is high, the +5V seems to decrease on the same condition.

-Also, under high CPU load for a long time (e.g. playing FIFA 2005 for 2+ hours), the system never hangs.

-Also, just ignore the second temperature reading (which says 144C); this obviously some error in the SpeedFan app.

Actually the error you describe can also indicate the hardware channel for that sensor is not implemented, and speedfan is reading a non-existant sensor... Same thing happens on some of my mainboards.

No surprises on the Soltek board needing a recap, Soltek was handing out capacitors for FREE while they were still a motherboard manufacturer, they have since left the manufacturing business.

for your usb2 card you need xp sp2
high cpu is a windows problem usually, i am suprised it happens accross all os you have tried
i would not expect there to be a bios setting to help
can we see a pic of the bulging caps. if they are bulging then it is a waste of time to troubleshoot problems because badcaps can cause many wierd problems. the board needs to be recapped and yes you can do it yourself, please read the faq and then come back with questions, we are pleased to help you do the job. after recapping then it is good time to look at issues which remain.

-Hmm, I'd like to take the pics, but for now I don't have access to any (good) digicam yet. FYI, there about 6-7 caps around the CPU socket that are bulged, & there is (something like) rust on the upper part of the caps.

-The attached picture I got from the Soltek China website; note the bulged caps are mostly around the CPU socket & one near the DIMM slot/IDE connector (circled red). Again, this is NOT my actual board.

Then by now, processor taxing tasks will fail. Thus crashes are right around the corner when gaming and thus if you continue to use it before replacing the caps, don't be surprised if you get a BSOD!

On an ECS K7S5A Pro or P4S5A2 mobo, I shorted a USB ports' +5V to ground through a rear bracket adapter, which got hot enough to slightly melt its vinyl. However it didn't seem to suffer damage and still works fine.

I have an NEC-based USB 2.0 card that was zapped when a device was plugged or unplugged, and not by high voltage from static. Ironically the only thing damaged was the LM3526 chip that was supposed to protect against such damage, possibly because the capacitor across the +5V and ground of the USB port was undersized or of low quality (Maxtor brand NEC USB 2.0 card uses 220uF, this one 100uF). The chip maker recommends a tantalum cap of at least 120uF.

Every time I back up to a USB 2.0 drive, my system becomes sluggish, and it seems that this is a common problem with USB. Is there such a thing as a USB adapter that does DMA transfers?

Hello Everybody!

-Sorry for this very late reply. Actually, I've (near) completely forgot about this thread.

-Hmm, I had replaced the bad capacitors about 3/4 month ago. The one who did the replacement is an expert (from my view) electronic technician that I know in my hometown. The replaced caps are a bit bigger than originals - there're 6 caps totals.

-The good news is : the problem gone! But, CPU usage is still a bit high than a P4 system (between 15%-45%) - maybe because old CPU & mobo, I guess. Another good news : this is actually my uncle PC, he rarely used those USB ports for large data transfers.

-Anyway, thanks for all advices & comments.

I've discovered that VIA chipped USB 2.0 pci cards don't work well in older motherboards with VIA chipsets providing USB 1.1 ports.
IMAGINE THAT!! VIA couldn't even get their own products to play nice.

Once a device is attached to the the USB 2.0 port(s) the memory transfer bandwidth takes a dive! Usually down 75% of maximum transfer rate.
The entire system slows down.

I've only been able to restore performance by rebooting the system after removing the USB drive device. This has occurred in Win2k and WinXP.

Place the VIA chipped card in a system with Intel chipset, and all is fine.
Place a NEC chipped card in the VIA systems, and it's also fine!

Go figure.
