Re: HDD Spins up and down again at power on
I just had that happen a few weeks ago because I used a SATA-IDE adapter that measured at least 1.2 ohms per wire, with some wires measuring 6 ohms.

Re: Matching output transistors on an audio amp?
The Harbor Freight multimeters they often give out free with the right coupon and any purchase have a transistor hFE tester, but I don't know how well it works for matching transistors.
Here's Walter Jung's review of a power amplifier and his efforts to match its input transistors: https://cdn.badcaps-static.com/pdfs/50bdf1e5349810d6c5f20945f4ffe112.pdfRe: Matching output transistors on a...d any purchase

Re: TO-220 exploded...estimated overload?
I once had a triac inside a Woods brand plug-in ground fault interrupter explode and left a nice copper plating inside the case, over a 3/4" diameter area. It turned out there was a recall on it, but the redesigned replacement failed in 1-2 weeks -- by leaving the electricity running. The 3rd GFI has been working fine for over 20 years.

Re: Old National IC ???
Here's a datasheet for a National MM53200 garage door chip, also 18 pins:
Notice the same chip is used for the remote and the receiver. My parents had a Stanley opener that had identical National chips in the remote and receiver, but I don't know if they were the MM53200 because 10-position DIP switches were used to set the code -- 2 positions unused? Later versions of the remotes had a slightly different circuit board, and the chip wasn't National but SEMIFAB.
Here's a thread by KI6KQD, who said he worked at National...Last edited by larrymoencurly; 11-14-2016, 02:23 PM.

Re: Your favorite “quick-fix” fastening materials
Provided it hasn't expired. I once bought a roll of 3M trim tape from an electronics surplus store and used it for a car's side molding, and once the weather hit 110F, the molding fell off. Changed the tape -- fell off again. Bought fresh 3M tape -- held the trim forever....

Re: Samsung, Sam Young, Korea, United and Nippon Chemi-Con: who is who?
3 out of 4 Sam Young 1500uF, 6.3V NXC capacitors on an Nvidia 6200 video card failed on me, about 5 years ago. Their date codes may be "79 E(1)" (2007?). The same type of capacitors, maybe in 1000uF size, failed on an older video card....

Re: Another HDD issue
The MHDD diagnostic that RJARRRPCGP mentioned will let you specify the LBAs of the first and last sectors you want tested. I don't know if a different diagnostic, HDAT2, allows that....

Re: This is why you don't buy cheap multimeters.
When I get a free Harbor Freight multimeter, I've always picked a model #98099 (yellow on/off switch), but last time I instead got a model #98025 (red on/off switch). When I opened it I thought it was better built because I saw a neon bulb for voltage protection, but it turned out to be a soldered-in fuse. The #98099 instead has a regular 0.5A fuse in a snap-in fuse holder.

Re: Does single sided RAM alwas = high density?
I don't think it's just the density that matters but the number of address lines used because around 2000, Fry's had a special on 80GB Maxtor hard drives for $50, after rebate, and a 256MB memory module was included. The module had 16 DRAM chips, but it didn't work with my 440BX chipset motherboard because each chip was 32Mx4, rather than the more common 16Mx8.

Re: Bad bios flash need help
If the Zotac motherboard has a socket for a video card, try that because when my MSI MS-7309 ver. 2.3 flash failed, I saw nothing from its built-in video, but a PCI video card showed some error messages and flash directions. Unfortunately they were of no help, and I had to resort to an SPI flash, where the parallel printer port of another computer is connected to the 8-pin BIOS chip and a program called SPIPGM2 is run. The 5V TTL of the printer port has to be converted to 3.3V TTL for the BIOS chip, either with a converter board or 300 ohm resistors....

Re: The Cen-Tech LE830b 7-function DMM from Harbor Freight Tools
Also the meter leads. I was measuring an AC outlet, and when I pulled out the lead tips, one stayed in the socket, still soldered to its lead, but it's been fine ever since I applied some plastic solvent weld glue and pressed it back in. Ironically, I had just warned somebody to not use this meter with high voltage. OTOH the AC readings were within 1V of my Fluke 73's
The meter pictured has a dot indentation in its rotary knob, but other versions of this or the 98025 instead have an arrow indentation,...Last edited by larrymoencurly; 08-01-2014, 05:10 AM.

Re: 2200uf 10v cap replace with 6.3v?
Are Sanyos more vulnerable to that than other brands? Because I replaced a bulging 10V, 2200uF Koshin brand cap with a 10V, 2200uF Sanyo, and 2 years later it bulged....

Re: Soldering question
I'd chop the capacitor off on the top side so the pins can be separated from one another and the stubborn pin gently and carefully pulled out after blobbing some more solder over its hole.
How many watts is your soldering iron, and how clean and how well tinned is the tip? I once had a 40W iron with such a dirty tip that solder wouldn't melt even when pressed directly against it. Also I've had worse luck cleaning tips with a damp sponge than with a damp cloth or paper towel or that curly hair brass, copper, or stainless steel.

Re: Power supply build quality pictorial. part 2
I have the same PSU with the same capacitors, also none bulging. It also has no bleeder resistors in the high voltage section, so even if I unplug it overnight, pressing the power button makes the fan turn slightly.
I had an ECS P4S5A motherboard with JP CE-TUR? capacitors that mostly leaked and bulged....
