Re: repaired TV sales have you noticed a very large decline

I have had the repair bug now for 3 years and have repaired TV's for friends and neighbors and purchased many on craigslist to keep my hobby going. I look everyday in my area and I do see a decline because of new ones being so much cheaper.

Recently I had to get rid of some because I had no more room so I ran ads on Craigslist. I keep records on what I have in them and just want to move them but I get ridiculous offers at times. I did come come off asking price somewhat cause they needed to move. I still came out ahead.

Have learned to educate the seller on price for older models and have made some good deals lately. Got two Panasonic 42" and a 50" Plasma's for $130 and that includes repairs. These are for me.

I still pick up LCD's when I can get them really cheap, but not gonna pay more than $25.00 for at least a 42 something inch and I have a good idea what is wrong.

It is just a fun hobby for me. Don't think I could rely on it for steady income.

yep... in the box store I get a 40" RCA smart TV with Roku stick for CAD$260 that I can pay for on a CC. At that rate nobody cares if the TV lasts 2 or 3 years. Still better than 2k to 4K for a high end TV. I don't touch any LCD's with CCFL's anymore unless it is a friend.
I also noticed that folks are not spending any money, unless there is a deal on it. At the recycling depot one only finds utter junk, that no one wants anymore. I haven't even found an old stereo PA, a half decent PSU or anything that matter for quite some time now. So I do think the economy is stressed to the limit at least around here.

You wouldn't belive them amount of times I have had people say this or similar to this "my daughter has been rushed to hospital I will leave it" like wtf and I know they just said that not to buy something as I can see them commenting on something else someone selling for cheaper alot of the time. Sly pricks people are.

I've all but quit the repair business, except for odd friends and for personal interest, there's just not enough money in it. I exclusively do engineering consulting now - pays a hell of a lot better! I've repaired a couple of test equipment items as well, but ended up keeping them for my personal interest. I suspect there's a lot more money there if you could get the faulty stuff cheap, but some sellers insist on absurd prices for faulty stuff.

I can pick up a new, fully working 55" 1080p OLED from LG for £1299 inc VAT. Yes, it's curved, and perhaps not as prestigious as a Panasonic PDP, but I'll bet it actually looks a little better. No one is paying £3k for an old Panasonic plasma.

It's the same for most companies.

E-waste companies won't pay much to dispose of the waste. Most of them charge per kilo. But they need the WEEE cert, which only the E-waste companies can provide.

If they just give the stuff away to the employees, they can't close the paperwork up, as some random employee is unlikely to be able to certify the equipment was reused appropriately and not dumped in some bin somewhere. And let's be honest that probably does happen sometimes...

When I worked at (nameless American multinational STB and satellitics company) we had to dispose of around 500 STB prototypes. These were assembled at a factory and were in every way completely functional UK Freeview HD receivers with 500GB or 1TB SATA HDDs in each. Every single one was crushed...for a very simple reason. Some of them had development software on them, and there was no way for us to determine, at a glance, if the box had "safe" (copy protected) firmware on board. If it didn't, then we couldn't sell it, because it could be used to rip off content (not that that doesn't happen already...) The company wasn't prepared to pay employees to go through and check every single box's firmware (which required us to dump the NAND and NOR and compare it to the reference article.) It was also not worth disassembling every box to extract the HDD, as it would have required 20-25 minutes per box.

As a result, they were all loaded onto a massive pallet, and crushed into small cubes, and recycled into raw materials. And the company paid for the privilege, about £10,000 if I recall correctly.

                                Hello.

GPU came in, green lines. Spent lots of time using to get the Mats / mods drive working (found on youtube).
Found issue with a RAM block
                                Replaced, green lines gone.
Trying to test again, assuming getting the false positive. Originally had over 1K on a single bank. Now getting tosses low between banks.
Used a good card to test and same results low errors 32+.

I am just search for some form of command to do a full test on the GPU.
I just ran the mats command with my good GPU and passed after roughly 40 min.

Yesterday I successfully repaired a Middle Atlantic UPS2200R-IP that had inadvertently been used as a surge suppressor at our transmitter site. It has already been replaced with an updated one but it's coming home with me now instead of being e-cycled. To be specific, this is the MA model that has the blue backlit display and has been discontinued, although this design may have been used in many UPS units including the smaller Middle Atlantic ones in this series.

Here's what happened: We experienced a brownout/surge at the site, which damaged the UPS and took our broadcasting...

My neighbor recently brought me an Ego 56V Battery Charger due to my reputation of tinkering with everything, asking if it could be repaired.

I'm trying my hand at this, with limited knowledge and the best intentions, a tried and tested recipe for disaster .
I've always had an interest in electronics and I'm quite keen to learn but do not have the fundamental knowledge which I think most people in this forum possess.

The unit allegedly died with two successive loud bangs. This leads me to believe that one component failed catastrophically which cascaded into...

                                by neilc6
I had picked up a UN55FH6200 which the owner said was rebooting randomly and I assumed it was an issue with the WIDT20R wifi module. This module has known problems in the E model years. When I looked at it, it had been previously repaired and the main board was replaced with one from a UN40EH series and the wifi module on that one uses a different connector.
It was already disconnected because of the incompatibility. The main was only secured with 2 screws so I improved the grounding using all the screw holes. Though improved, it still suffered from random reboots. Test was to leave the...

A2338 M1 Not turning on - Repaired slightly but still having issues
                                by Stephen
Repaired a customers computer, had a faulty APL 1097 chip and replaced, all well, not shorted anymore, however I am finally getting 12.28Volts on PPBUS_AON, however it stays at 12.28 and doesn't increase to the normal 12.60 Volts. I read that this is the cause
                                • If the voltage is approximately 12.28-12.35V, it may indicate a communication issue between the SOC and PMICs, or corrupt firmware.
Can someone point to me what would be the next step to fix this. I can feel we are getting close to fixing this board, however this is a data recovery and we need to fix the computer to recover the data....
