50 inch Panasonic plasma vertical Black line

    Hello,

Just wanted some help or advice if possible.

I have a 50 inch Panasonic plasma model TX-P50G30B which has had a few hours viewing in the evening, age around 2.5 years.

We were watching it on Friday when a 3 inch black vertical line appeared roughly about 2-3 inches from the left side of the screen.

    Is this repairable or scrap??

    Thanks for and help given.

    Regards,

    Sam

It could be a few things. Worst case scenario is the address buffer ic on the panel went bad. But could also be a bad connection on the clamp connector where that ribbon enters the panel on that particular area. Also could be a bad address board on that side. Located across the bottom of the screen.

First question is there still a warranty on the tv?
If you open it up be careful there is alot of dangerous voltages in there. if you are going to attempt to find the cable associated with that spot always make sure that the TV is unplugged when you do any touching of anything in there especially those there's voltage running through so don't try to mess with it With the tv plugged in

Did I leave the soldering iron on?

Thanks for your fast reply, No it has no warranty but I don't really expect it to fail after a few months either after paying over a grand for it.

I was hoping it might be a simple plug worked loose after reading through some of the threads.

Update. there is all different colours speckles going down the inside of the black line.

            Just checked.

I had a 85u like this and it ended up being a bad panel, reseat/clean the ribbon cable and connector on the buffer board and see if anything changes.

Also see what happens when you unplug the affected ribbon and turn the panel on. One thing I have noticed with Panasonic is if the panel is like this and when you unplug the bad cable it will not change, but if you unplug and turn on a panel that is fine the line will show an array of rainbow sparkles.

Make sure to reseat the cables good and firm before powering on the unit!

Ugh... Sorry, but that's bad news. Most likely, it means the panel has failed. More specifically, the chips bonded to the bottom of it. Essentially, new TV time, unless you can somehow find a new panel... and they aren't normally cheap.

Well, Panasonic -are- quite reliable. This is just bad luck to be honest.

In my opinion a Sony is just an overpriced Samsung (with the associated LCD panel issues.) So, avoid it. Avoid Samsung too.

If you have to buy an LED-backlit LCD TV, try getting an LG, Sharp (>55" only) or Panasonic. Those are pretty much the only three brands I can have any hope in... and in my opinion they aren't great anyway... but they're the best of a rather mediocre bunch.

Spend the bread and get the Samsung PN64F8500 or the PN51F8500 will do well too Best PDP on the market right now... well the only PDP really that's worth it outside of going legacy Kuro or Panasonic but then you are getting into used territory.

Definitely try getting an F8500 Samsung plasma if you can... Samsung's LCDs are terrible, but their plasmas (in the high end) are pretty decent.

Panasonic plasmas are still the best hands down. You just had bad luck and sorry to hear that.

Thanks for that.... To be honest I have always stayed away from LG as I thought ( not knowing why) gut feeling as they used to have a terrible reputation. So it is either a Panasonic or LG Budget is around £900 not much for todays market but xmas etc. any suggestions? was hoping for 50 - 55 inch and seeing that you have made me doubt the sony I am unsure.

Hi folks - first posting on this forum, so I need to hijack a thread with a similar problem. I have an LG 50PK590 which has developed a broad vertical black line initially about 3" wide but has now grown to 9" wide right in the center of the screen - arggh! I have spent a fair bit of time reading previous responses and tom66 refers to a C-Board as being a potential problem. I have the back off and would be grateful for advice.

This would be a bad panel since there are stuck pixels in the line. Bad TCP. Sorry.

Thanks for the quick response tom66. Anything I should double check before I strip it for parts?

If you like, try reseating the connector for that part of the panel on the C-board, though I'd be surprised if that made any difference.

I assume that the c-board is a pcb or pcbs along the bottom edge of the back of the panel with ribbon connectors trapped into them. Apologies for demonstration of ignorance!
