Recently our Dynex DX-42E250A12 42" LCD TV stopped responding. When we shut it off, we could not turn it on. The standby LED remained lit, but there was no response to the "on" button. I have a smattering of electronics experience, and I've replaced things like fuses and caps on circuit boards before, so I took it apart to see if I could find a problem. The TV is easy to disassemble. There are only three boards inside. The power supply board is the only one that has non-solid caps on it. I could not find any that were bulged, and the fuse tested good. Connections all looked tight, and I could see no evidence of cold solder joints, no hot spots, etc. I put the board back on and plugged the TV in, switched it on. It came on, but I heard a faint cheeping, and after a few seconds, one of the caps on the power board started smoking, and exploded. I did nothing to the board, there were no shorts, etc. I'm wondering what might have caused this? A bad voltage regulator? The cap that blew was the largest one, on the far left in the picture, a Rubycon 82uF 450V capacitor. I've found a new board for it, but I'm hoping the fault here is confined to the power board, and not something else.

Re: Exploding cap on Dynex power board...?
You said the cap exploded, did it leak any liquid? I cannot tell from looking at your board to see the damage on the cap. That is the main filter cap. Did the main AC fuse also blow?Never stop learning

Here is a closeup.

Re: Exploding cap on Dynex power board...?
It's possible it just failed by itself due to a manufacturing defect or such. If it went open-circuit I think that would explain the fuse being OK. Then the PSU wouldn't work because there would effectively be no filter capacitor to keep the mains voltage up.
Or perhaps some failure in the PFC circuit caused it to be over-volted? Budm, do you know if this is possible?"Tantalum for the brave, Solid Aluminium for the wise, Wet Electrolytic for the adventurous"

Yes, it is possible that the PFC lost its regulation.Never stop learning

Re: Exploding cap on Dynex power board...?
Power Factor Correction
I actually had a power board recently which was "eating" 450V caps. Two blew up. (Old one & replacement.)
I checked it the bus voltage. It was 360V normally (a little low.) Just before the second cap popped my meter went over-range (that means >660V...)Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

Re: Exploding cap on Dynex power board...?
Not to be walk on this thread, but your board looks exactly the same as mine. I have the same problem with mine. I'm sure that the problem is in the PFC circuit. See link below:

I haven't found the problem yet, but still looking. Also, I bought another board since they are ridiculously cheap, but I want to find out what the problem is.
