Re: Sony KDL-46S5100 Screen Lights Up but No Picture

This is a typical tab bond problem for this sony model that causes blacklight on and no picture. I had tons of these sony panels with this problems (Always the sony model with the speakers on the bottom of the screen)

This model is tricky with the tab bonds though. But you can probably do the tab bond fix. The tricky part is that you have to do it while the tv is off. Put pressure on the tab bond and then turn the tv back on. Its all luck, keep doing it until you finally get the picture. Because if you flex the tabs and the picture goes away with but backlight is still on, the picture won't come back no matter how much you fiddle with the tabs until the tv is turned off and back on again.

Welp. That just pisses me off and is driving me to do surgery on this tv all night until I absolutely cannot do anything else. Worst case I'm even gonna try to figure out a repair for the tab even if I mess it up. So wish me luck and I probably won't be able to figure anything out but I'm not going out with out a fight. I haven't lost on a tv yet

I might try messing with the tab bonds, but I have never done it before.
        What material works best?

Re: Sony KDL-46S5100 Screen Lights Up but No Picture

Well I messed with the tab bonds just by tapping them and what not to see if I could get any kind of a reaction and they all seemed good. I looked at the traces in the tab and they looked solid. Might have been somewhere inside the screen that I can't see. Anywho it was real late and I had a blonde moment. I took the metal cage off the front to expose the tabs and after messing with it I put the tv back on the stand to stand it up while the cage was off to mess with the tabs some more cause the one side that did come in good was flickering after I laid it down on the table to take it apart. Well when I stood the tv up on the stand I forgot the metal cage was the only thing holding the screen on and it fell out and cracked. So now I'm definitely screwed. I gotta sell the parts to hopefully get back some money I lost.

Happens to all of us now and again....

First time for me--was a CRT set. A portable Bush Ranger monochrome set. I had fixed it and just hinged chassis back up,--chassis caught CRT base,--and Broke the tit off the tube....

Sickening hissing and a comment from my boss--That's gonna cost ya!

The old bastard made me buy a new CRT for it, cost me a weeks wages back then, as I was only an apprentice....

It happened to me to with a 46" Samsung LN46A650, which it was repaired and while putting it all together it happened. grrrr
I thought that the stand had those two hooks holding the TV, but it didn't and I have just placed the TV on the stand while I was inserting the screws and suddenly the TV it fell forward.

Re: Sony KDL-46S5100 Screen Lights Up but No Picture

Since I had nothing to loose I decided to strip the metal frame off of the TV so I could get to the tabs.
I found some self stick furniture slider pads from Wallmart like these. Only difference is they came in a pack of 12 and cost just under 3 bucks.
I put them on the top (board side) and flat (screen side) of each of the tabs that are on top of the screen.

As my luck would have it either I did it wrong or I dont have a tab bond issue and it's still most likely a bad screen.

                thanks

Yea I do t think its in the tabs themselves I think it's actually inside the screen itself that's causing the short. I even thought that it might be in the circuit board with the tabs. Since it has a bunch of little smd caps and resistors.

yep could be anything it seems. it's a shame they have to design TVs with cables permanently bonded to the boards and screen ruining what would other wise be a nice 46 TV that's only 5 years old.

In contrast I am still rocking a 26" RCA CRT that is 16+ years old and turned on for 8 or so hours a day and has not given a single problem.

There are driver ICs for the TFT, they are mounted on the flexible PCB, they are little rectangular ICs and they do run hot! When it shorted out it will drag down the power supply voltage on the T-CON board so it will cause the whole screen to show blank screen, that is whay when you disconnect one of the ribbon that feed the shorted out section, half the screen starts working.

Try this, With the TV still OFF, on the top left corner of the lcd panel, very gently and slowly (lcd screen is extremely fragile) pull on the corner of the lcd screen out so it stretches the tab fully (not so much force on the tab but just enough to let the tab extend out straight) Keep it held like that steady and now turn ON the TV. The picture should show this way if its the tab bond.

If it doesn't work try the right side corner, but usually its the top left.

I am working on one of these right now and it looks like the tab connection to the panel itself not to the printed circuit board, I started a thread with my results so far.

I've been a lil busy the past few days, but I did manage to find time to try what Glitcher suggested.

I tried on both corners and unfortunately it didn't work for me.
