Philips 50PF9631D/37 - 6 Red Blinks on Front LED

Plasma TV: Philips 50PF9631D/37 Chasis: BJ2.5U PA

My tv is not turning on except for the front red led light that will flash 6 times before repeating itself.

I am far from a pro in this area, but I'm determined to get it going again. I have read for two weeks now in many forums and downloaded a service manual which I have mostly covered, but not completely understood. The service manual says that the 6 flashing lights denotes a problem with the 5V supply. I have tried a few things mentioned in these forums....I tried the plug/unplug trick with no success, I plan to try the hair dryer trick tonight when my girlfriend comes over with one. I removed the back of the tv and didn't immediately see any capacitor problems, but after removing the power board I flipped it to find that two of the capacitors(circled yellow in attached photo) that are usually suspect(C8059 &C8060) looked fried at the connections. I ordered replacements from digikey for the 3300mF 10V 105C+. I replaced them with Panasonic FM 3300mF 16V 105C+ 20% Radial (P/N: P12373-ND or MFG P/N: EEU-FM1c332L). Replacing these caps hasn't fixed the problem. I tried plugging the power cord in and removing then replacing one different cord from the Power Board each time before I plugged it in. The only one that had any affect is one that, I believe, goes to the SSB at connection 1M46 on the SSB and CN1M46 on the Power Board. When I remove this connection the led 8001, which usually clicks on for a few seconds then off, stays on. This also makes it impossible to power the tv off without unplugging it. I'm in the middle of checking fuses and getting as many readings as I can off of the Power Board right now, but wanted to try and get some feedback or advice on where I should go from here. I will add more as I find out or remember...Great forums and advice on here so far, and thanks in advance. Oh, and please correct me if anything seems wrong as it very well could be being I'm barely an amateur.

You seem to be doing alright - you have established you need to be checking out the 5 volt supply as per the 6 blinks. We might be able to assist with that but your pictures are not clear enough for troubleshooting.

Was this your set when it went faulty - how did the fault evolve? - did it not always come on- flickering- noises
      is there any audio .

      Welcome to the forum-
We can help a lot more if you please post good clear pictures of the whole chassis, and then pictures of each board, front and back (in the same orientation) and close up of connectors, (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) using the manage attachments button, which is found by clicking "go advanced" under quick reply.

Please do not post inline and offsite as they slow down the loading of pages.

It will be useful if you can say a bit about yourself - skills tools etc.

Re: Philips 50PF9631D/37 - 6 Red Blinks on Front LED

I found a 2A fuse on the board that was blown. I double checked that it was blown, I triple checked that I purchased was the correct one and that it worked. As soon as I put it in and turned it on it popped and smoke immediately started coming off the board. I think a few resistors may have been burnt up here. I'm thinking of just ordering a new power board. Anyone think this may or may not solve my problem? Any help it comments would be great!

          hi,
          Downloaded the manual philips_50pf9631d37_chassis_bj24u_bj25u_sm.pdf
Which fuse on which board exact was blown ? (example 1U04)
the speakers should be connected, because the ssb checks the presence of it.
which resistors burnt up (example 3U25) .. ?

The fuse I changed that blew was F8005 and now a smaller cap on the other side of the heatsink looks slightly bulged. The cap is C8062.

Do you have a digital multimeter?

Yes I do. Not an expensive one, but it's digital.

That's fine. Are the outputs on the PSU labelled?

Some of them are on the connectors and most of them are lower than they should be. I check the power cable and input to the board and they are dead on so I'm loosing power somewhere on the board. The fuse that blew is pretty close to the ac input so I figured that's why I wasn't getting accurate readings if any reading but I'm not sure of the order that the power is disputed across the board because the schematics are Latin to me.

Can you check your meter against a known good source e.g. a fresh 1.5V battery? Just so we do not go off on a wild goose chase.

OK, since this is essentially a Samsung TV with a Philips main board, you should have a 5.2V, 5.3V or 5.4V standby voltage. Is that indicated on the PSU board anywhere?

The two connectors that go to the ssb each have a pin that says 5Vstb but that is the closest thing I see and it doesn't give an exact voltage other than that on the board

Also the board says Samsung on it in the lower left corner

Try measuring the 5Vstby anyway but I would expect 5.2-5.4V. Maybe since it is used in a Philips TV it uses 5V instead.

I work nights but ill check soon as I get home. Do you think I will still get any power even if that fuse is blown? Ill list all of the 5Vstb readings soon as I get them. Thanks

So there are two of the 5Vstb on connectors and one that is just on the board and all three gave the same reading. It read 1, but it was flashing fast on my meter. It didn't matter which of the sensitivity settings I had it in in voltage it gave me a 1 then a few blank space and then a decimal. Not even how it would usually show the number 1. Strange! Any ideas?

Scratch that. I tried it again and I thin I may have had a bad ground because I tried it again and got 5.2V I also attached a picture of where I'm taking the readings

5.2V is good, so what do you measure on 12Vsw?
Meter common can be attached to the back of the plasma panel while making measurements.
