How Much are You Guys Paying for Broken TVs?

I mean plasma and LCD ones?

Certainly a cracked screen is usually a freebie.

But assuming the screen is in good condition, I've
been hovering around $20 a pop, due to the real risk
that I won't be able to fix it properly, and because of
the very limited money you get from selling parts on
Ebay, after Ebay and Paypal take their cut, and after
all the hard work you put into dismantling, photographing,
listing, packaging, and delivering your items.

Someone else mentioned $20 here too. Sounds about
right considering many repairs are $200-350 or so,
with most people preferring to put that towards those
brand new, incredibly cheap sets at Walmart.

    Thanks for your input.....

    £20 to £50 depending on condition. £20 for a small 32" LCD, £50 for a 42" full HD plasma.

Re: How Much are You Guys Paying for Broken TVs?

It depends on the TV, condition, and the chance of repairing it. I cheerfully have paid $200 (the customer's asking price) for a 2 year old 46" Samsung LCD TV that was displaying classic 'bad caps' symptoms. I turned around and sold it within less than a week, more that doubling my money.

I won't touch the plasma TVs based on the Samsung LJ92-01200A, LJ92-01202A, & LJ92-01203A. The cost of repair is too close to the resale price. The Philips 42PF7220A/37B is worth over $50 when it has the flashing error code - the repair costs under $10 and the TV has a great picture.

I considered buying a 32" Polaroid for $25, but the seller was a flake who refused to give me his address.

£20 to £50 is about $30 to $75 US dollars. But
        yours is a different market.

Still, maybe I shouldn't be such a cheapie!!

        Yeah, that LJ92-01200A, LJ92-01202A, & LJ92-01203A
group is real problematic and expensive.

I may have a chance to get a 50MF231D/37. The seller
asked for $30. It would certainly be worth it if it's only the 2 bad
caps most people get on their power supplies. Problem is,
the original owner supposedly tried to fix it, and may have
zapped something out on the PS. Additionally, the screen
may have a slight scratch on it.

It still looks like a possible winner (that power supply
is around $75 on Ebay)....what do you guys think?

If someone else tried to fix it, $30 may be high. It is entirely possible you will have to repair both the original failure as well as whatever the first guy mangled.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

            I might offer him $15-20.

I guess everyone's local market is a bit different

Been lucky here picked up several LG, Vizio, Sanyo and Toshiba LCD's for no more than $5.00 each. The only problem child has been the Toshiba. Agree if someone else tried to fix the set before the risk goes way up

So far more luck with repairing "junk" sets than my My Panasonic tuner

I've had people ask me how much they could get for their broken tvs. I personally wouldnt pay more than 50 bucks for one. And thats only if the screen is still good. Lots of people think just because they paid 900 dollars for a 42 inch lcd 5 or 6 years ago that they can still get 150 or more out of it. I regularly check craigslist and thrift shops for deals. I have been pretty lucky and have had a bunch of tvs just given to me. Most people dont have a clue what a pain these things can be to repair sometimes.

Re: How Much are You Guys Paying for Broken TVs?

                      Good Guess - It is!

Including the professional CRT video monitors I would say 35 or so TV/Video monitors hooked up and operational. A GVG Horizon Audio/Video routing system uses somewhere around 15 Sony NTSC HR professional monitors as dedicated destination monitors and 20 plus cameras as inputs. Used to check on what the dogs are barking at and what's happening in the outbuildings. The Barn has a 37" HD Vizio, The garage has a 42" Sylvania, The game room a 37" LG, each of the four bedrooms have their own HD systems. SDI, HDSDI, NTSC, PAL, and a RF distribution system connect most of them.
After 35 years in the Broadcast supplier industry and consumer repair business this TV suff remains adictive.
Just yesterday got the sylvania for free (a few bad caps nothing more) and swapped out the 26" Tosbiba in the garage.

Now got to get back to those dead tuners on the TH-42PX25 Panasonic Plasma

Sure is a great site here

Re: How Much are You Guys Paying for Broken TVs?

I also shop in the 30-75 range for tv's, i pretty much only look for lcd's with power supply issues. Usually a 10 dollar fix if component level, or 30-50 fix if have to buy a board on ebay. Then could resell for 200-300.

I havent sold much though, house is still in filling up with TV's phase. Around 5 so far.

19-22 inch lcd monitors are usually 5-50 if broken, and almost always power supply / capacitor issues.

The more models described/fixed here, the easier it is to make a good choice before you buy something.
Fixed so far 12 lcd's , 1 plasmas, 5 monitors, 0 dlp's (plan to keep the dlps at 0). and 3 atx power supplies, and 2 motherboards.

Would something like this be a good deal?? What exactly do you guys look for or ask to get an idea of if it's a power supply issue.

Maybe but I'd only pay $25 for it. It's only 1024x768 i.e. "fake" 720p. (Many plasma TVs today sold as 720p are only 1024x768.)

Here's the steps I would go through. Get the model number of the TV. Do a search on eBay using that model number and including the 'search description' option. That will tell you what boards are in it, and will tell you the availability of parts.

In this case it is probably the classic shorted IPM of the LG Electronics 42PC3D family. Examine the display when it is powered on. If it's black, the 'pop' was from the Y-Sustain, if it's got a little light in the lower right hand corner it's the Z-sustain.

The sustains are available for about $75, repaired the TV is worth $250 - $300.

keep in mind in the us people use walmart pricing.. so when you go to resell your tv it may have been an $1000 unit new, youd like to sell for $350-400.. but if walmart sells some cheap junk tv the same size new for $300, then good luck asking near $300 for your used one.

WHen i was into it hot and heavy before there was too much competition and the pricing fell out, i was paying $20-50 per set. Only more if i knew it was a great set showing typical caps symptoms.

Re: How Much are You Guys Paying for Broken TVs?

I have the same problem but I can sell 23" lcd tvs all day for 90.00.

I only get into the 50" plasma tvs since they are man-cave worthy and the wives let their husbands spend only 300.00

I also show them a few of my older plasma tvs with the good sound and the fact that the panel is 8 years old with no screen burn and that it stickered for over 3000.00

My pioneer was over 7500.00 new in 2003 and it has the picture to back up the price tag.

I don`t even look at a 42 plasma anymore only the lcds sell at this size now.

I don`t pay hardly anything for them anymore and mostly look for the free stuff now.

I have been doing well with the tablets. They are really hot right now.

Plainbill had said they are a bit small to work on and he was right. I have to wear an eyepiece to do any type of boardwork or soldering.

The best to hope for with tvs is why I got into it in the first place.

                                    1) to not to need to buy a new one.

                                    2) to learn something new.

Thinking about checking out a PS3 that randomly wouldn't power on one day, we assumed someone stepped on a cord and broke it but not sure.. Once I get this working I can test out hdmi and see if it works or not, if not then it may be something stupid simple with the knowledge i'm learning from this.
