    Warning! Kaaaaboooomm!

someone dropped off a toshiba 36" tv last week to get rid of it.i found that it had a worn out crt so it stayed on the dolly and was rolled out to the loading dock.back was off to get the crt tester on it.tried to slowly tip it onto its face off the dolly when all hell broke loose.imho it was damaged somehow and just laying it on its face set it off.
the boom brought out half the neighborhood.crt totally disintigrated and peppered my hand with bits of glass.several minor cuts and ringing ears is all i got.my help got hit with a big chunk but not cut.will try to get pics later.

      Re: Warning! Kaaaaboooomm!

There had to be some type of fracture or weakness somewhere.

The front of the CRT is the thickest part so the damage probably wasn't there.

I'd be willing to bet there was hidden damage around the rim concealed by the frame where you couldn't see it from dropping or rough handling. Tipping the TV by the front plastic frame applied pressure around the rim and when the TVs weight was on it's face it gave.

Well at least it's a modern implosion proof design an old tube would have gone off like a claymore mine.

To think I've done the same thing countless times without thinking twice.

Could the bad picture have been due a vacuum leak and not a worn tube?

Saw this when I was selling parts. We handled Channel Master replacement CRT's and the other guys handled some brand whose name age and time have removed. Many techs had problems with face to tube fractures and dead tubes after a short while. Turns out the other manufacturer had a problem in the face re-attachment process. Took them over a year of failures to get it right. CM was still a better tube...

When I worked for Philips back in the 70's we'd replace the odd tube in Magnavox sets. We used to try to get them to implode when tossing them in the dumpster (e-cycle?, re-cycle?, safely dispose of lead?, hey it was 1978 ), never did get more than a loud hiss out of 'em. Thinking back, we were probably lucky

            WoW!!

That means rimband failed or was not tensioned properly during CRT manufacturing.

You are very lucky! See doctor for the glass removal?

We dispose of CRT into bin and we didn't get one to implode. Only time one CRT did in a way was coworker was carrying a box and power cord snagged in his hand and jerked to free the snag. Except 14" TV fell 6 feet onto concrete floor face first. BOOM. Face intact but the bell imploded.

            Cheers, Wizard

If you're going to chuck a TV in a dumpster neck it it first.

Tap the neck with a hammer lightly that's the thinnest part of the glass due to the yoke being in that area. You'll get a hiss and that's about it. You could also drill a 1/4" hole or so in the anode cap but it would take longer for the tube to fill. At least then there is no risk when the dumpster is emptied.

Necking seems risky. I used to cover them with a box or blanket and just pop the nib at the socket.

Never saw a shadow mask or aperture grille up close before. Can't tell what type of tube it was to verify.

Rebuilds what did CM actually do to rebuild a tube back in the day? Replenishing cathode emissive substance, replacing gun assembly, re-phosphoring the screen, etc?

For this toshiba TV, probably Mitsubishi CRT or RCA CRT or if the TV is very late model, could be generic CRT.

                              CRAP!

I ~had~ to work the store the day the manager got to go to CM plant where they did this. He did buy drinks that night though, so it wasn't all bad.

IIRC - New gun, re-phosphor & screen, new aquadag. There were 3 levels of tubes and each had different processes done. The top end warranty, and most costly, was the Lifetime, then I think there was a 3 year and a 1 year. I don't know if I have any old CM books that describe the whole process. If I find it (or fall over it), I'll post it up. So much crap around here....

                                        Hi everyone in this forum,

My name is Phong, and I have been a handyman working for hotels for 20 years. It's becoming a bit too heavy for me to carry the PTAC units to wash them every year. I'm looking for ideas on how to convert my 3-wheel dolly into a 12V motorized dolly. I would appreciate any suggestions on where to buy the parts or any general help to get me started with this task. The capacity should be around 100 to 200 pounds, but my current 3-wheel dolly has a total capacity of about 600 pounds. Sorry if my english is not too good.

                                        Thank you for your help!...

I upgraded the hardware of the laptop to be more responsive and reliable, but it turns out that it's not reliable at all. It originally had 8GB of RAM, a 1TB hybrid SSHD and a WiFi 5 card. I upgraded the RAM to 16GB, installed a 128GB SSD and instead of the SSHD, I installed a normal 2TB HDD for files. So far so good. Then I cleaned up the fans and replaced the thermal paste with some fresh Arctic MX-4. Proceeded to upgrade the WiFi card and installed...

warning!! machine is not in committed state"
I realized that since it was a virgin card, some data was missing... I took it from the notebook's plate and inserted it with a tool found online but the error remains. I can't find the BUILD ID (not even on the partsurfer site). Is there a way to recover it? I also have a bios backup from the previous card, could I recover it from there? Thanks and sorry for the bad English

I recently bought a hp workstation on marketplace. I think i got scamed. I ending up with a sample mechine? It has a QS CPU in it. But now there is a very annoying warning message every time I boot up
Is there anyway I can remove this? I see some forum post that mention about sssm.bat. But can anyone provide more detail about it?
                                        Thanks
                                        John
