2Wire psu BT 2700HGV router

Router is a rebadged 2wire, no lights on hub, psu has faint squealing from it when plugged into router, DMM shows 5.1v but no idea what happens when plugged into router.

Opened psu case and saw 3 bulging 1000v 16v rifeking caps, so decided to change them but ran into a problem, I had 20mm x 8mm caps but they are too tall by a few mm and the pins wouldn't go through the small pcb holes 1.2mm?

So I'll need to find some caps that'll fit, anyone had these psu's fail?[/IMG]

Actually, what's difficult with that part is the 8mm diameter. With Nichicon, the only low impedance series that has a 1000uF, 16V part in 8mm x 20mm is the new HW series. That looks like a good series, but it is new and availability may not be good. IF you can make 10mm x 20mm fit, you've got lots of options with Nichicon - the HE, HV, PA and PW series, and possibly the HD series, have 1000uF, 16V part in a 10mm x 20mm case.

I've got panasonic FR series 8x20mm but as you'll see from the photo they are taller than the originals, not a lot of space for them, as mentioned, I'll need to widen the holes for the panasonics to fit. So far haven't found a 18mm or so tall 8mm cap.

You can use 10v and even 6.3v caps in that since it's a 5v supply. This should open up more options.

I can't believe someone has over specced the caps on this psu, or is it the originals were so far out of spec!

They likely just had a few thousand of them lying around and thought they'd put them to some use. This kind of thing is common in routers and switches, i see 16v caps often on rails that run at 3.3v or lower... and yes i see them failed.

Some people say that higher voltage caps last longer in a given application, sure, if they're good quality to begin with. Higher voltage crap caps are still gonna fail because they're just a different kind of crap.

I fixed a lot of these, some use 1000uf 10V, some use 1000uf 16V. I use 10V PANASONIC FM series.

Actually, in your first post, last photo, the heatsink on the right appears to be taller than the original caps. If the new FR's are the same height as the heatsink you might be alright. Dry fit a new cap and see if the plastic cover clears it.

I'll have another look at the FR's but think they stick a little above the heatsink, failing that its the FM's.

Either will be more than adequate and should last a couple decades, at least.

                          Update on this,

finally fitted 1000uF 10v FR's, psu is now working, router is now alive. The 16v sat just above the heatsink and would be in contact with the case.

What do you guys stick the case back together with, I thought some solvent glue would stick them together but it doesn't melt the plastic?

                            I always use superglue/loctite.

I use PVC pipe glue, super glue gel works well too.

PVC/solvent glue doesn't work on this cover, I'll try superglue, plastic can be a problem.

I have been using for the last few cases a Pratley product called Wonder bond, a flexible 2 part epoxy. 2 part rsin and hardener available in white and black, which adheres well to almost any plastic after you degrease it with a solvent, and fills gaps well. Use a small spatula ( cut a piece of plastic card to mix and apply it with) to mix it and apply it. Small beads from the tubes and hold the case together with a clamp or some PVC tape while it cures for 24 hours and you have a like new join. Can be opened for rework but does well in filling gaps and such.

I've used a 2 part loctite epoxy before to repair difficult plastic, grey when mixed, just find it messy to use, also tried another loctite product which was an activator brushed onto plastic before using superglue but it didn't seem to be any better than using superglue on its own
