L&C B300ATX with G-Luxon

This 300W PS is full of G-Luxon. None show any problems (after about 3 years) I am somewaht surprised with the cap values. None are greater than 1000u. Most other power supplies have 2200u even 3300u. I am thinking of swapping the caps out and increasing the 5V rail caps to 2200u. Anybody had experience with this PS model?

That's one of the over-rated Deer/L&C models - about 180W is the right spec for it. They have multiple issues, including under-rated rectifiers, caps, missing RFI components, marginal +5Vsb, etc. It can be upgraded, but with significant investment of time.

Thanks Linuxguru. Well it looks like increasing the capacitance value is a step in the right direction. It is only powering a Duron 1300 system with on board graphics. An ECS Mb with OST caps in every part of the VRM (OST ugh!!!!). Amazing the whole rig has survived three years. Probably because it a very low duty cycle as a home computer.

You really should not be using those powersupplies, they are IMO not safe

There are multiple threads here about them and why not to use them...

Buy a used Delta or something on eBay, that system should be fine with something in the 230-250w range

I would rather use a PSU found on the sidewalk or in a dumpster, even if it was rated for just 200-250W, because major brand computers tend to come with very high quality PSUs, except for maybe the Bestecs found in some HPs. But don't plug in a Dell PSU if it has fewer than three orange wires on its 20-pin connector or it may cause your computer to go BOOM!

I believe that as of 2000 or 2001, they began using standard ATX wiring. Before that, it'd plug in, but the wires were wrong. Good reminder though, something to keep in mind.

I found that my Dell Dimension 8200 has a standard ATX PSU (Dell-branded Hipro 250W), and it's circa 2001. (I initially thought it had a LiteOn ) I discovered this when I was working on my PSU: I had an eMachines/Trigem Lomita board and I was going to test the unit. Absentmindedly I plugged my Dell Hipro into it... and it worked fine! :gasp:

I guess I won't need to buy those "Dell Compatible" PSUs after all.

Hold up on that last post... I just read somewhere that Dell has another proprietary trick up their sleeve - the case of the PSU itself. While it is an otherwise regular ATX PSU case, the cable input is on the left, and there's no room for a power switch. (Of course, that's what a hacksaw is for... )

Damn Dells anyway...

I repaired 1997 "ATX" Compaq PSU recently. The pinout seemed standard but I was not able to turn it on after repair. Then I found that it has PS_ON signal active high.
