    Fic P4pb-400

This puppy had two strikes against it from the get-go IMO (see: First International Computer) and the kicker was the GSC caps. Symptoms were extremely slow boot & the occasional freeze. Manufacture date was April 2002. FIC didn't get the memo, and continues to be a bottom feeder as far as I'm concerned. Every capacitor on the board was a GSC. These caps were fed by a seven-dollar PowMax "400" watt PSU. I will offer the board to anyone who wants it for the price of shipping.

    Regards,
    Jim

I really have a bad taste in my mouth as regards anything FIC. If it was an ABit or Epox I wouldn't think twice. Spaced, if you're serious PM me, we'll hash it out that way. Shipping... I dunno, six or seven bucks?

        -Jim

P.S. I'm getting the twin to this setup in the next couple of weeks. I'm going to check the caps well and replace the PowMax with a FSP 350 watt. She told me it's running fine. It will sit for weeks at a time, powered off, between uses. The pictured board was in use 6-8 hours per day.

I recommend you recap that board ASAP. In your picture 7 bad GSC caps are visible and it only takes a few caps to bring down a board. It may work fine now but will not later.

If you don't want the board ship it to the guys on this forum that want it.

Thanks, but that was the plan. I pulled the FIC, snapped a photo of the caps, and replaced it with a Tyan board. In a previous post I offered it to anyone who wanted to pay the shipping. Out of personal preference I refuse to spend very much time (e.g. recapping) on anything manufactured by FIC.

if you still have it i have a neighbor who needs a socket 478 board for her evilmachines crap box.bad caps went undetected too long and it died 2 days after recapping.

                  Re: Fic P4pb-400

I shipped it to Spaced already. I'll probably have another one available when I get the second system. I'll PM you if I do. Chris1992, I have personal preferences for everything, especially motherboards. I've experienced high failure rates and general nonsense with FIC boards, so I don't care for them.

                      Re: Fic P4pb-400

Interesting, I have the exact same board (mine is VIA brand and VIA boards were being produced by FIC) and the exact same caps were leaking. I replaced them with KMG capacitors and it is completely stable now. I know that KMG is not recommended since they are not ESR, but I did not want to spend more than the board worth while fixing it. Apparently KMG is not ESR but still better than those junk capacitors, board is working completely stable since several months under constant load 24/7.

You can see the details in the following link

i missed your post, so if you pass by again we are glad you liked our info.

GREAT you got your board working perfectly again!

KMG are not so bad i guess, digikey cross references them to panasonic NHG which is an ESR cap at the lower end.
