I hate it when that happens

I promised my supplier of bad monitors, that I'd have a couple working ones to give back. So had a bit of spare time this evening, thought I'd crank out a couple.
Grabbed the first one, an LG 1750s. These are almost always bad caps, even though this one tested initially as a 2 seconds to black.

Cracked it open, got the ps/inverter out, and re-capped. Got it back together, turned it on, it poweres up, lights stay on but.........

Dammit! broken screen!

You'd have thought I would have noticed when I first tested it :

Oh well, I'll keep the boards and recycle the rest.

The second one, a little Benq FP557 was a breeze, 5 caps.

Ya, I always ask prior to purchasing LCDs if the screen is cracked and even though they say it's dead I usually try to plug it in anyways to see if what they say is true. But at least you have parts for it if you happen to find another one with a really bad board or another cracked screen. And if all else fails, sell it on ebay cause I know someone out there needs it. I have 2-3 LCDs where I need new inverter boards but can't find them.

Well these were free, so I can't complain, I just should have looked closer before I started the repair.

Why don't you try to repair your inverter boards? They're usually fairly easy.

I'm an engineering student and kind of self taught at the moment, so really don't know how to fix inverter boards. (If I'm even calling the board the right part :P) But it must be nice to have a 'supplier' of broken LCDs, this is how I make my 'fun money'.

I'm looking for a supplier for broken LCD's. I know these are being thrown away every day all over the USA. I fixed the seven I managed to aquire.

Any ideas smason?

I can relate to what you are saying. I do repair work for a local electronics recycling company. They give me about 8 monitors to repair AND no one bother to check if the LCD screen is crack or defective. I finish the repair and now see the LCD screen is crack after doing the repair. Oh well sale it for spare parts

Before starting the repair, how about connecting a good working power/inverter lcd board to the suspect lcd panel?

The connectors all seem to be the standard 2 pin power/return wire. You will get a white screen, but at least you can see if the lcd screen is cracked or not?

At this recycling place they just sort base on what look good for resale and no one check for any physical damage of the LCD screen.

Testing isn't a problem once I am at my shop, sometime these LCD screens have cracks that are internal and can't be seen unless you use a flash light or the inverter flashes for a second or two. Then there are the LCD screen with the glossy film. which is very difficult to see any cracks or damage.

don't forget about the LCD screen that display on color lines. power must be apply to catch that.

I'm lucky, I'm a computer guy for a living, so I get dead ones from work if they're out of warranty, plus I know quite a few people in the computer biz, none of which would bother or know how to do hardware repairs.

Just get the word out, I once posted on my Facebook status that I wanted some, and got a few there too. It helps that I often donate repaired monitors to a non-profit that I do volunteer computer work for, and to a few others in need.
