Samsung Syncmaster 245BW - Common symptoms - don't how to test

Alright, So I have seen a few threads floating on this but neither one seems to address the exact problem I am having and I need a little more direction on how to test and resolve it. The issue is one I have heard from others. The power led does light up on the monitor, but it will not display a picture. With no inputs connected and the monitor on it does not show the seeking signal screen. Now, if I have my computer on and connect the monitor and press the menu button I can get a quick glimpse of the desktop (it is shifted about 25% to the right) and then its off again. Its no more then a second. Also, when I press the arrow enter button I get some colored lines on the the right side of the monitor. This is not overlayed the desktop, just on its own.

So, I am a complete noob when it comes to electronic boards. I understand electronics and computers on the service and to the component level, understanding the board level itself is knowledge I do not have. So, I have taken apart the monitor a decent amount of the way...first thing I always do when I have a problem with something, lol. I do not notice any obvious issues looking at the boards. I have heard many mention bulging capacitors, but I really can't seen anything that looks abnormal to me, at least, with my untrained eye. So, I took pictures of the main boards I came across and I am look at some guidance on if there is something that is obvious from the pics or what and how I can begin testing. I do have a multimeter. Let me know if you need other pictures. Thanks all! Reading on this forum, seems like there are a lot of knowledgeable members willing to help.

We are going to need better pictures in higher resolution and posted to this site. After that, we can suggest things to check with your multimeter.

    1) Post clear focused pictures AFTER reading

    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1868

    2) Please do not post pictures inline as they slow down the loading of pages.

    3) For best picture quality and clarity take your boards to a window on a sunny day, turn flash off, and use macro mode. Take a top down view of all your boards (front and back). Make sure the photo is legible so that we can read the PCB printing clearly. A shutter speed of 1/125 or faster will produce nice clear focused pictures. Try to get a photo that is 2000x2000 resolution or as close as possible.

    4) Here is an example of the pictures we want.

If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.

We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.

Please do not post inline and offsite as they slow down the loading of pages.

Will do. My initial concern with such hi rez photos was the size (mb) for the photos and the max acceptable for the board.

When you use the manage attachment, it will specify the mb size. I use software to "resave" the jpg and can typically shrink the filesize by 4x and still have high quality focused pics.

I am not able to upload the images. The upload fails even though it is at or below the size and dimension requirements. When I try all 3 at once I get a security error. When I try 1 at a time it just tells me it failed.

So I think I have identified the problem and it is two fold. I was taking pictures of everything in better light, when I decided to check the actual backlight and LCD. Well, as you can see from the images two bulbs are cracked. Also, there is a dimple on one of the LCD ribbons. If you zoom in you can see it. It corresponds directly to the last photo, which I light with a lamp while using my laptop to provide the source. Everything works but that strip and it lines up perfectly with the ribbon with the dimple in it (like a finger nail). So my questions. The back light does not stay on at all. Would the two bad bulbs cause this? Or should the 3 good bulbs still light up fully? Second, is there a way to repair the ribbon issue? Will a shop have to do it?

Yes, 2 bad bulbs will cause the backlight to go off. Most inverter IC chips are designed to shut off the backlight if one or more of the ccfls are bad. Think of it as "all or nothing".

Don't know about your ribbon issue.

as far as the ribbon problem thats part of the LCD and I know of no way to repair it.If you decide to spend the money on lamps, you could still have a display issue.
              Al.
Whatever I do, I consider it a success, if in the end I am breathing, seeing, feeling and hearing!

What about replacement part for the LCD with Ribbon?

If this were my monitor, I would try the ccfl replacement and pray that the ribbon cable is fine. Since this a 24 inch monitor it is worth the effort.

If it were a 15 inch monitor, I would use the parts for future donor parts.

The problem is, I know the ribbon is not fine, because the distortion is there when you use another lamp as the backlight.
