    Yaesu VR5000

So I have one of these come in for repair, deaf across all bands I have the service manual for this and will get to that in due course. The radio has had a hard life before coming into possession of current owner / client. I need to locate a pair of rotary encoders (volume main and sub) part number J62800138 its a commonly used encoder across a range of vertex radios.

There may not be any point in proceeding with the repair unless I can source a pair of these and currently for a part that must have cost pennies the only sources I seem to able to find are in China or the US and are costing upwards of $30 - $40 per unit. See below

If you order 10,000 units you might get them for pennies but for only a single unit, that's not that bad a price for a dual encoder with switch, at least it is still available.

Yeah I think the customer is going to feel differently about $60 to $80 dollars just for a pair of encoders that is before I even get started on the repairs to the radio itself and the obvious fees involved.

maybe you can drill into the side and blow switch cleaner into it

The centre shafts have both been broken off

Well the customer is happy to pay for replacement rotary encoders so now all that remains to do is establish why the radio effectively has no receive across all five frequency ranges. Although the set produces a decent amount of static noise, just no modulated rf signal. So its going to be a common stage to all five bands probably around the front end, one of the obvious commonalities looks to be the PLL.

If you need to adjust the center control but can't because the shaft is broken, you can use a fine hacksaw blade and cut a shallow slot in the shaft, then you can use a small flat blade screwdriver to adjust the encoder. Then once the radio is repaired you can replace the encoders

                Re: Yaesu VR5000

I have good volume with more than enough white noise coming through so don't need to do anything with the centre control as of yet. Everything more or less works on the set other than one rather important and missing feature, that being a significant lack of all modulated of signals.

From the way the block diagram is layed up the set's front end is divided into 5 more or less sep frequency paths.

                0.1 - 30Mhz

                30 - 622Mhz

                622 - 1240Mhz

                1240 - 1860Mhz

                and

                1860 - 2600 Mhz

The receiver is equally insensitive across all of these frequency ranges, well the samples I have checked at any rate, there does not seem to be much listed regarding failure modes with these scanners and or common problems so I might have to actually put some work into this set lol.

Actually on that point, the service manual I have for the VR-5000 is somewhat less complete that I would have liked for. Specifically in that it contains only the circuit diagrams, block diagrams and board layouts. If anyone has a more complete service manual I would be greatly appreciative of please.

                  Kind regards Mark

I have had this radio in the workshop for some time now and am getting no-where with it. Customer reported complete loss of receive, when asked it was working one day and the next no receive. I was able to obtain part of a service manual which is little more than some pdfs of board layout, block diagram and circuit diagrams, none of these are searchable.

Connecting this to a sig generator confirms the radio is completely deaf, I mean nothing, nada with a starting signal of 5uv upwards, I have checked this across the five bands this scanner covers and same result. Everything else...

                    Yaesu FT-726R
                    by 2percentMilk
Hello, I acquired a Yaesu FT-726R recently, and it has been having some interesting problems. When In CW, LSB, or USB mode, the busy light lights up, and I can receive. However, When I switch to the FM Mode, the busy light goes dark. and nothing comes out of the speaker. I Tuned the frequency to a local repeater and one of the meters shows that there is a signal coming into the radio. But even when that meter is showing that the radio is receiving a signal. I still can't hear anything, and the green busy light is still dark. I've followed the instruction manual, and nothing that I have tried as...

ESD Diode on HDMI output of Yamaha a1050 RCVR
                    by budwich
I lost one of the two hdmi outputs on a yamaha rx-a1050 receiver. Of course, it is the hdmi1 which has the arc capability which was useful. The second output hdmi works OK.

I got an hdmi breakout board which gave me access to the "little guys" in the hdmi. I did some gross DC voltage measurements to ground and found that the Data1 pair (4 and 6) had a lower voltage than the working hdmi.... 1.1v versus 2.9. All others pins seem to be OK. Further when plugged into a display, there is no video but a message on the screen which I assume is the display's status for the...

Trying to repair Yaesu FP-707 power supply
                    by Cartel
I'm trying to fix this for my buddy. The power supply would power up, put out 13.8v but drop to 0v with any load.
He tried to fix it by replacing 3 caps in the "AVR" board, that didnt work.
I fired the parts cannon and replaced 3 "10D1" diodes with 3 "sk3081" diodes I had, a new 35 amp bridge rectifier, I tested all the other components and for the "2SA1012" was subed with a ECG "TIP53" and I replaced that with a "D45H8G" and same results, 13.8 and 0v under load.

I pulled the 2SD717 regulators and they all...

                    Retro DC Bench Power Supply
                    by Brendon@aa
Hi, pretty new to repair and have an OLD benchtop DC power supply with no output. There is no voltage showing on the volt meter display however the current meter is full scale at 5a when on the 2a limit setting and 1.35a when on the 500ma setting.

230V AC is making it past the fuse and into the main transformer - a yellow pair on the secondary has 30VAC on it, Brown pair 37V, there is what I think is a centre tap coming from the main transformer in green that has 15V and 20V respectively from the yellow and brown windings.
From there the power dives into what looks like a control...
