    magicspin dvd burner

anyway, i have this magicspin dvd burner. it is in my dad's new computer i built.

i just tested it by burning yellowdog linux to a dvd+r. i put the disc in a mac g4 sawtooth, it will not reconize it. the g4 has a dvd drive.

it is a new batch of philip's dvd+r i bought today... my question is are magicspin drives worth a crap or is it pure junk?

Never heard of magicspin, but what software did you use to burn it? I use freeware imgburn.

With some DVD burners, you can use imgburn to set the booktype for better compatibility.

Also, try the newly burned dvd in another computer device.

came back as corrupted on a similar old dvd drive, came back ok on the orginal bruner drive.

my guess is the mac's drive and my old drive are too old for dvd+r, maybe dvd-r would have been better?

DVD-R is always safer with older drives. when in doubt, go minus. besides, it all burns the same speed . . . slow.

well, i did not plan on putting yellow dog on the mac anyway... i'd bet it would work on a mac g5 that will have os 10.5 compressed on it. i will not have the mac until next week at soonest, but if dl works, i bet +r will as well.

the original mac drives are known to be bs,
you probably need to set the booktype to dvd-rom.

and your burner is probably an OEM, so if we can find what it really is, you can put better firmware in it.
              you may get lucky,
i salvaged an Asus burner from an old machine, turned out to be a Pioneer DVR111 !!!
that's one of the best there is!

has your "magicspin" got a model number?

                99% chance it's a BTC drive.
model number would be handy, together with current firmware revision.

it has two model #'s, one is idvd16dd, the other is dvdrw1016im. it says it is made by smartpro intetnational, ltd.

it came out of a custom build i got at a thrift store. it had a nice case... good sturdy foxconn.

mac drives are definitely finicky. sometimes the ISO even needs to be burnt on a mac (don't know why, never looked further into it) for another to read it.

i dont know about the majicspin is the same, or maybe renamed, but i do know of an IO Majic brand.. they are the same company, just rename as the Digital Research brand.. both are crap.. or at least used to be.. I bought some of their drives a few years back and none of them lasted.. got what seemed like a good deal on them.. when none lasted even 1 year on light use.. it was not quite as much of a good deal..

as for the readings.. did you make sure that the DVD was finalized?? A lot of DVD players will not read the disk if it is not finalized.. especially the older ones.. Ran into that a few times not thinking myself..

it's moot now... the burner burnt a xubuntu cd fine today... that mac was not going to get yellowdog anyway, it was more of a test. what i was going to use a dvd+r for will likely not need one, what it is, will not be said unless the other party says it first.

and again, mac drives are known to be a problem,
it used to be common to replace them with pioneer or nec drives on sight.

the combo-drives are probably lite-on junk.

they tended to use Hitachi drives in the G4 days.. which were awfully slow and VERY picky about media..
(real Hitachi drives.. not Hitachi-LG a.k.a. HL-DT-ST .. a.k.a. what most ppl call LG these days..)

i just relpace them with LG DVD-ROMs or DVD burners.. not worth the trouble finding out what the dumb old worn out drive in there likes for a media type..

                                          Asus P4C800-E VRM issues
                                          by c_corr
This board had the initial fault in VRM with high side Mosfet from PWM1 (phase 1) getting very hot. It also had the VRM caps quicly heating up in 10-15 seconds after power on.

This board uses mext ICs and Mosfets in VRM:
                                          - ADP3180 PWM controller - in 3 phase mode
                                          - ADP3418 as Modfet drivers
                                          - High side Mosfets STD38NH02L (from ST)
                                          - Low side Mosfets STD90NH02L

Some of the symptoms were very similar with the "Dead Asus P5P800-VM" in this forum.
I had the sawtooth voltage on Vcore too this was probably the cause of the Vcore caps...

Kenmore electric range replacement infinity switch?
                                          by CapLeaker
Actually this range had multiple problems but I fixed all the others already.

I am stuck finding a replacement infinity dual burner switch for a Kenmore C970-605121. The dual burner is stuck full on as soon as you turn the knob either side, either the difference of either only one or both burners running full tilt.
I tried cleaning it inside contacts, but that didn’t do anything.

I believe the dual burner switch reads a part number of: 318191021 which is hard to find. I came across a 318191026 part number but it has 2 pins on the row missing. Is there anything...

Diesel heater emergency power supply / poor man's UPS

                                          Hello everyone.

Some background - I have one of those chinese diesel heaters, which I'm using to heat a garage. Probably most of you are familiar with that units, but here is some basic info - the main heater body is enclosed with the motherboard+sensors unit inside a plastic case. The heater has a glow plug, that works only when the unit is starting (start the fire in the burner) and stopping (make sure to completely burn the fuel inside the burner) and two fans on a single motor. One fan is used to push fresh air in the burner, the other is used to push cold air in the case and...
