    Software Fakeout!

Just recapped a 601bs4 socket 370 Azza last night.

Hooked up the original Hard Drive (XP) and all was cooel!
But when I shut down, it would go through all the motions but then restart - Doh! What had i done wrong?

I rang the owner and explained the outcome only to be told, "Oh Yeah, it has always done that"!

Well! Thanks for letting me know.

I then substituted a hardware agnostic Windows 98 hard drive and booted in safe mode to avoid new hardware detection. Shutdown worked fine.

A quick searchon the net revaled the culprit .... Roxio Software!

There was an update patch on there site which specifically resolves this very issue!

That's why I always use my hard drive for testing.

      Re: Software Fakeout!

reminds me when i recapped a guys computer and then started it to be greeted with a "this program needs to be shut down". Yeah "it always does that" he said. Whew!

but yes i am getting more annoyed with misbehaving software. recently we had the apc powerchute 6 problem (yes i should have known) where it made the mailserver look like it had serious virus infection but there was no virus to be found. turned out to be a certificate for the java part of the software expiring. powerchute was also a goddam problem to install on linux. in the end installed apcupsd which installed without issue once i had found an older version which was noted to work on rhel4

need a new antivirus for corporate and work laptop use. i am done with symantec and mcafee. any recommendations?

seen several times on windows xp when you go to shut down it just reboots

it reboots because its set to automatically reboot on a crash, if you turn off the setting you get a blue screen, was caused by old logitech software being installed. remove the software and it solved the problem.

seen in acrobat 7.0.0 the microsoft explorer 4.0 scroll mouse when it scrolls to the top of the document generates continuous system beeps. requires 3 adobe updates to be applied and all is well.

I use HDD with Windows 98SE - it does not need to be reinstalled for each board (unlike XP...). First I boot DOS mode and use GoldMemory to test memory, then run Duke Nukem 3D and leave the demo running for a while (it easily crashes after a while if something is bad ). Then I run Windows, let it install all the hardware and run Prime95 for a while. Next I boot from Slax live CD - it oopses or segfaults during boot if something bad (found bad CPU this way last time - Pentium 100 - crashes at 100MHz but runs fine at 90MHz).

I know what you mean! I went with Grisoft AVG Network Ed. on my corporate and personal LANs. The licenses are cheaper and the software works great on any OS. Less resource hogging and no lock-ups, BSoD etc... I've always stayed away from McAfee, but gave up Symantec after 2003 Edition. Too many problems if you weren't at least using XP. I'm not a believer in the "latest is the greatest". Look at what we see in these mobos and their components. Same goes for programming code. I've tried Panda & TrendMicro too and they work better than the mainstream crap! I've used the free edition of AVG on numerous machines for over a year now and have not had one incident. Give the free edition a try it sold me! Techsupport was great too, by the way, when I needed help on the remote admin from the server to the clients package setup.

it is so common to find corrupted os on a badcaps victim i dont ever trust a load that was in use on the bad caps.too many glitches caused by file corruption.

If you're sick of McAfee and Symantec I'd suggest you try Kaspersky; someone did a test of virus scanners at Overclockers.com and this one came out on top as far as finding and eliminating threats.

Dunno about resource hogging, etc., but at least for detection and removal it exceeds the competition.

Grisoft's AVG has always been my choice.
Steven Gibs impressed me many years ago with his security concerns.
