Best Overall Amazing Back Up Setup? 1K-4K Budget! Software + Hardware? Help!

I remember a lot of people before when my hard drive failed told me that I could do a couple of amazing things with backing up data. What stuck out is two things...

    1. Software that will backup your data live via a cloud solution or over the internet without having a corporate cloud product.
    2. Get a storage tower with hard drives and load them up.

What I mean is there software out there that you can install on your computer. You tell it which data you want backed up. Lets say your main PC with (2) hard drives and (8) hard drives connected to it via a tower.

Then you have and (10) hard drives connected to the internet or your LAN to which this software will automatically copy all of your data 1 for 1 match, live, not compressed from your current PC and (8) hard drives to your (10) hard drives in another location.

Live and in the current moment. So if you make a change or add a file, it automatically copies the differences.

Does this make sense? If not, what is simply the best hard drives I could buy, the best hard drive storage or bay system to hold them, and what is the best software that I can do this with that is non compression and not cloud base that cost a monthly fee.

    Thanks!

I am trying to understand TrueNAS-Core -- the free version. It sounds like it will be a good file server, but I'm not too sure about backup. Maybe True NAS could be considered both. I don't understand some of the terms. I installed on an FM1 fanless PC (17 by 17 cm board), formatted two identical 500 GB SSDs for storage, and I'll be using them as duplicates, which I think is RAID 0.

If you really need 10 drives to store your files, you are probably much more familiar with this. Some of the terms they use like "Pools" makes my brain blow a 20-amp fuse. I simply have no idea.

But True NAS does look powerful, scalable, versatile, and if I want to set up Plex Media Server, it will work on this system.

pools usually just refers to groups.
like if 6 months from now your 500gig(x2) gets a bit full so you add a couple more drives.

failing hard drives after sitting for years...
            by eccerr0r
With the discussion about water pumps failing when cars sit for a while, I wonder what people have seen with hard drives. Do people see hard drives failing after being sat on the shelf for a long time unpowered versus a hard drive that's at least powered up at least once in a while, say, weekly?

Wonder if it's worth spinning up the spare spinners once in a while to keep the bearings lubricated?

Wonder how I should best keep my cold spares for my RAID "fresh" for eventual failures of the working drives. Was thinking about keeping a hot spare but that's another...

Evaluating Mechanical Hard Drives SMART Data in Linux (Ubuntu) Using the Disks Utility.
            by abajor
I've gotten into the habit of Looking at peoples Mechanical Hard drives with a Ubuntu thumb drive to boot their system.
I understand the raw values are not really uniform between manufacturers, but I have noticed that high seek and read error raw values at the very least correlate to a drive that is going to have sub par access time, and extremely slow OS booting.
The odd thing is I've often seen very high seek and read error rates on drives with fairly low on time.

Does anybody have any other takes on evaluating smart data? I've used Crystal Disk Info, It seems to present...

**Need Help Unlocking BIOS and Hard Drive on Dell Precision 5820 Tower**
            by federalhouse
            Hi everyone,

I'm in need of assistance with a Dell Precision 5820 Tower. The BIOS is locked with "Dell Security Manager," preventing access to the HDD-1 hard drive.

            **Background:**

I recently purchased this Dell Precision 5820 Tower from a recycler who salvages equipment from abandoned office spaces. The computer was left behind by its previous owner and was password locked. Given that it can run Windows 11, I saw this as an opportunity to upgrade my setup.

            **What I've Tried So Far:**

            1. I accessed

It's 2025: do you know where your 5¼" floppy drives are?
            by eccerr0r
            Oh wow.

As in the other thread I was trying to revive/re-bootstrap an old Apple IIe and wasn't successful reading or writing any disk. Both drives behave similarly.

Then I was wondering, what about my PC floppy drives? I have a HH 5¼" HD drive and a combo 5¼+3½ drive. I tried formatting the disk that wouldn't work in the Apple and it didn't work in the PC either!

Then I tried a HD 5.25 disk ... it won't even touch the disk either! Just like the Apple DD disk, "Not Ready!"

Weird. Seems the PC drive is having trouble clamping...
