Re: Sysprep/mini-setup problem
All of my images are doing this check. The only one returning an error is the one on the Vsphere. I "solved" it by uninstalling the nic on the final image. It runs mini setup without a problem then reinstalled the nic when windows loads and all works perfect.

Sysprep/mini-setup problem
I am trying to setup an image to be the template for our new VDI project. I have run into a problem with the mini setup setting the network information. I get this error "an unexpected error has occurred while changing your computer's network identification." I can then click OK and it goes on just fine and does set the proper name and workgroup.
Here is the Netsetup.log

Re: Okay, someone explain this to me?
I started putting pirate copies of windows on my laptops. They have licenses on them, but it annoys the piss out of me that I have to call microsoft every time I reformat them. Pirate copy fixed that right up!

Re: Netbooks
We stock the Acer's at work. I do not really care for the vertical trackpad buttons on the side of the trackpad. Also the ones we have must be split in half to upgrade the memory and Acer tells us this voids the warranty. I bought my son the Asus 1000HA and I like the touchpad better than the Acer. Also the memory and hard drive are located under a simple access panel on the bottom so maxing out the ram was a two minute project.

Re: 192MB RAM and Windows XP
I have an old K6-2 500mhz Compaq with 192mb ram -4mb for shared video ram. I prefer XP on it, seems to run better than 2k. I disabled all services that I did not need, disable indexing, system restore. I do not use antivirus on it and it browses very well.

Re: Samsung hard drives...
That sucks you are having such bad luck with them. I look to Samsung for all my personal work. My boss buys what ever is cheap, usually WD or Seagate. We have been having much better luck with the WD drives over the Seagates. The last Samsung drive I had fail was I think a 60gb many moons ago.

Re: Can a crappy psu slow the system down
I have seen many times gaming computers built with very nice power supplies that were just not enough for the job. The computers were stable but 3dmark and games had severe stuttering problems, these problems went away with a larger power supply, so I would say yes.
What I have seen lately for example are nice over clocked quad core systems with 9800 GTX or GTX 260's and decent 425-500w power supplies. Heavy skipping and stuttering in 3D. Replace them with a nice 650w and its silky
smooth.
Then on the...

Re: New DVD drives
I got a Lite-On sata burner when I rebuilt my computer a few months ago to replace a Lite-On parallel burner that I loved. The sata one sucked and would only burn most of my dual layer discs at 2.4x. I was steered toward the Samsung sh-s223f, I have been very pleased with it so far. Have no idea how long it will last but it always works and its always 8x on my cheapo dual layers.

Re: ECS P4VXASD2+ Locking Up
The virus scan is probably taxing the system more than anything else your doing. Especially the southbridge.

Re: Using Zeners to Reduce Fan Speed
I have a bunch of these 7v adapters, typically work well with good power supplies but I have had many computers not turn on with them hooked up.

Re: Vista Downgrades & Other Root Canals
I have been doing a lot of downgrading lately, especially laptops.
I have not found one that I cannot do yet, but some make me scream.
Most of the time there is something that I cannot find the proper driver for so I just start forcing some in and eventually find one that works. I have also manually added the hardware ID string into INF files to make them install, can be a handy trick.

Re: A-Power 500 Watt PSU - Record fast dead caps
We get those in the "gamer edition" with lighted fans for $8. I hate them but my boss keeps ordering them, we sell them for $29.96. They always fail in a couple months with blown caps, the distributor doesnt even want them back, we just tell them we have 20-30 bad ones and they send more no questions asked.

Re: Keyboards
I grew up with a Model M and loved it.
I did use a Saitek Eclipse gaming keyboard, liked the feel, liked the lighting and it did not have the F-Lock crap. I spilled lots of alcohol in it and it still works. I just upgraded to the Eclipse II and like it even better, good feel, better lighting, 3 colors!

I am running Vista Premium x64, not to bad. Turned off the User account control that bugs ya all the time. Had no problems with quicken 2005 deluxe. Quickbooks 2000 wont install. Speed seems fine. Running it on 3 computers in my home. Athlon x2 2.5ghz, 2gb ram, 2gb readyboost drive, 250gb sataII hdd 16mb buffer... Athlon x2 2ghz, 2gb ram, 500gb sataII 16mb buffer drive... Core duo laptop 1.86ghz, 32bit vista, 1gb ram, 5400rpm drive. All seem to run fine, but laptop could use 2gb ram.

Re: Nightmares of returning a motherboard
I've seen that board come from the distributor new with the small caps behind the PCI Express slot vented.
