    Cooked PhysX?

While reinstalling hardware on my system I ran a test to see if my BFG Ageia PhysX card was working and the test kept timing out.
After reinstalling the driver (yes, the system was detecting the card as present) I pulled the card out and found this:

    Damn.
Looks like the cheap fan failed and the heat actually deformed part of the fan.
Did these cards impliment any kind of thermal protection or is it cooked?
I would put the card back in with a different fan on top but I can't lose the PCI slot next to it and thus I can't test it without things getting messy.

thats the same fan i have. mine never worked right. i bought it as a kit from geeks .com. only difference is mine had a standard case fan connector and a tachometer wire. same fan, same aluminum base.

that fan would either not start or run very slow. adding lube didnt help a lot. it was a ripoff.

too bad i lost the hardware to it, i know zerotherm make a badass gpu cooler. mine was purple and came with ram coolers as well. it was big but powerful. so powerful that i bet you could do some serious gpu oc'ing with it.

as for the card, probably not. a wimpy cooler fried out a radeon 9250 of mine. made by connect3d.com. if it got that hot, then you probably cooked you goose.

edit: found a pic of my cooler ki- the bad one:

    that look like yours?

as for the zerotherm, this is it:

    maybe someone else has it?

That heatsink is far more flimsy as opposed to the one I have but the fan looks to be the same.

If you want some OC'ing, you get that cooler. Have that on my old 8600gt.

Have you tried contacting their customer support and asking them if it has thermal protection?

Who am I to contact? Ageia was bought out by Nvidia years ago and I don't think Nvidia really cares about the card.

            Re: Cooked PhysX?

Is it under warranty? PhysX IP went into Nvidia's drivers and dropped the hardware side. Nvidia bought Ageia to get at PhysX concept/IP, not the hardware.

If not, junked sorry. This is reasons we don't see much PhysX support in games as the newer video cards and current CPUs (C2D and quads, i5 and i7) are much capable of handling the demands so there was not much need to code PhysX for hardware.

Try BFG, they have a rep for having good customer support.

$51 for a gpu cooler? damn, thats way outta budget. i guess the x800xl will keep the stock cooler...

btw, i found out you can oc gpu's in linux. ill have to try that sometime.

I don't know what the slot situation is on your motherboard, but you can use a lower end Nvidia graphics card as a PhysX card. When compared to $51 for a cooler, it might not be a bad deal.

Unfortunately, with Nvidia's latest drivers that is no longer possible.
Should the drivers now detect you are also using an ATI video card in the system, the driver disables the Nvidia card until the ATI card is disabled or removed.
The only way to get PhysX support while using an ATI card now is by using an older Ageia PhysX card. This is why when you look for these cards on ebay the prices are still quite high.

From that article, your PPU shouldn't even be working when a non-Nvidia graphics chip is present.

"In addition, for some incomprehensible reasons, the latest version of PhysX System Software also prevents PPU cards (such as BFG PPU) from working if a Non-Nvidia GPU is present."
