I must be one of the few still using my old Netburst machines, but those Presc-hotts just fried another of my Intel boards. Are the Cedar Mill CPUs any kinder (cooler)? What would you recommend?

Re: Prescott CPU wrecks another motherboard
^ That's what I'd recommend. If it can't run Core 2 Duos I'd suggest finding a newer motherboard and a Core 2 Duo. Both can be had for less than $40 USD, looks like a bit more up in Canada.
Here's about the cheapest I can find, http://www.ebay.ca/itm/331572430440
Intel DG35EC with a Core 2 Duo E8400. It'll be a huge upgrade and you can probably reuse everything off the Pentium 4 sans ram if that's DDR rather than DDR2.Comment

Re: Prescott CPU wrecks another motherboard
Most HT/netbust processors are socket 478....not very likely you'll get an LGA775 C2D to work in that.... If the motherboard is toast, I most certainly wouldn't replace it....time for something a touch more modern.<--- Badcaps.net Founder

Re: Prescott CPU wrecks another motherboard
Yah. I find that you can get used C2D PCs so cheap now that you can't even give a P4 machine away.
If we end up being left with a P4 PC at work, it just goes straight to the metal recyclers, even if it is working fine (although I may scavenge and recap or re-use the PSU if it's decent enough)Last edited by c_hegge; 07-06-2015, 06:26 PM.I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

Re: Prescott CPU wrecks another motherboard
Yes the Prescott's run hot and knowing that you can't really blame the cpu for killing the motherboard if you don't use proper cooling. To make any good recommendation you need to tell use what board you are using (aka socket and chipset at least).Comment

Re: Prescott CPU wrecks another motherboard
The old Foxconn motherboards that Dell used are pretty solid too, sans the caps. My OptiPlex 170L is still kicking. In fact, I am about to retire my Pentium 3 PC (HP Pavilion 8756C) right now to put the 170L in its spot, which has a 2.8 GHz Prescott.
Anyways, if you have socket 775, check your motherboard's manual to see what CPUs it supports. You may be able to put a C2D in it. If not, then go with a C2D and new motherboard. Used C2D chips are super cheap on eBay now (at least the low and mid-end, not the high end ones). If the P4 CPU did everything fine for your before, the C2D should be more than enough for a while. Not to mention it will run cool and consume much less power.Last edited by momaka; 07-06-2015, 10:33 PM.Comment

Re: Prescott CPU wrecks another motherboard
If you are going to spend $40 to $50, I suggest checking your local kijiji for systems with a dual core processor.
I looked up your area and set $50 as the maximum and found the following. Remember to negotiate on kijiji. If they ask $50, offer $35 or $40.
If the description is correct (ask seller), then this deal is the best bang for the buck. Pentium quad core 2gb ram for $30.
http://www.kijiji.ca/v-desktop-compu...top/1084006902
There are many others under the $50 mark that are dual core, 1 to 2GB DRAM and some with hard drives and Windows 7 COA. I won't list them all, but you can easily search on your own.
PS. All my systems at home that are dual core or quad core were found on local ads from people who gave them away for free as non working. Usually the culprit was a single bad capacitor in the power supply.--- begin sig file ---
If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.
We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.

Re: Prescott CPU wrecks another motherboard
Where I used to work I had two core2's available for sell for upgrades, an E6600 and E6550. If one was sold, I would get the money for it. My boss (a 48 year old ex manager of a plastics factor who did computer work for hobbying) put the 6550 in a customers Pentium D motherboard, after I told him not to, he said 'fuck off'. I knew the motherboard was not core compatible and ran much higher voltage, too much for the chip. He turned it on, with a black screen, and a burnt silicon smell coming from it. He burned the chip. I said, I told you, congratulations, you owe me for the processor. He said simply 'fuck off'. I told the owner, he said he would talk to him. I never got my moneyCap Datasheet Depot: http://www.paullinebarger.net/DS/

Re: Prescott CPU wrecks another motherboard
We were building two identical computers for a customers business (I built one, he built one) when I was switched to contract (without notice or being notified so I could not claim unemployment). I finished and brought it to the shop when the customer was called to pick them up. I put mine in the original computer case, he did the same to his, the customer picked up HIS case and we heard a fairly loud bang inside. He forgot to screw the hard drive in. He had to take it back out and screw it in. So embarrassing for him.Last edited by Uranium-235; 07-09-2015, 09:16 AM.Cap Datasheet Depot: http://www.paullinebarger.net/DS/

Re: Prescott CPU wrecks another motherboard
I think a lot of Intel branded boards actually, if you check the integration guide, says not to install Prescotts in them. At least my DQ45CB does not list the S775 Prescott as a valid CPU, most likely due to the VRM not being correct for them.
I unfortunately had to go get one of these boards because my Gigabyte EP43-UD3L stopped working properly, but the Gigabyte board does list the Prescotts as valid CPUs. I currently have a 3.4GHz Prescott in that Gigabyte board while it's being tested.
The DQ45CB got the nice Core2Quad Q9550S to run, which probably is very easy on the VRMs. It was the cheapest on eBay at the time that supported all the old hardware the Gigabyte board had.
I still have yet another 3.4GHz Prescott in a S775 MSI Neo3-F which doesn't support Core2 CPUs officially. Unless I get a really cheap Core2 to test, I don't think I want to try to see if it will work with them for fun. Would be nice to have a Core2 board that supports DDR1.Comment

by glovecapsHello,
I have a Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 (G533QM) that had a dead motherboard (Graphics card dead) and after trying to fix the motherboard with no success, I bit the bullet on a sale for a new motherboard. I ordered a motherboard for the 15 inch model which is the one that I have, and when the motherboard arrived it wasn't for a little while that I saw it was from the 17 inch model.
My question is, can I update the Bios on this G733 motherboard to a G533 Bios.
The reason for wanting to do this is that the keyboard isn't working as it should, and I think this... -
by DocusHi everyone 😀,
I'm here today to ask for help with repairing the motherboard of a Lenovo Legion Y540 17IRH.
To give you some context, I'm passionate about computer repair so much so that I've invested in a lot of tools and started practicing on dead and old hardware. I've been learning how to solder and desolder components, mostly focusing on phone repairs.
Recently, I bought a broken Lenovo Legion Y540 17IRH for just €150, and there are two main reasons why I made this purchase:- I already own the exact same model, but its plastic chassis is badly damaged.

This one is a 2nd hand motherboard which I could use it for few months only. Suddenly no output from the internal display and also no signal from HDMI port then Windows out of order after few boots.
Caps lock working normally and no HP's caps-lock warning blinks. Making a hard reset and replacing the RAM sticks or using different slots didn't help.

by momakaHere’s another motherboard that needed a full recap: an ASUS P5GC-MX.
This one was gifted to me some years ago by user Pentium 4, along with a few other goodies. It actually came in working order with no bulging or leaking caps. However, I noted there were United Chemicon KZG caps everywhere on the motherboard. The CPU VRM output (CPU V_core) was the only exception: it had only 2x KZG. The rest was 6x UCC TMV 4V 680 uF caps… which aren’t any good news either.
So here is what the motherboard looked like with its original caps:
