    It's stuck....

    Hello Everyone,

My DVDRW drive doesn't want to eject or close it self or even read discs. Today I put into my drive a "Borat" DVD movie (Funny movie I'd have to admit though a bit adult rated) and the drive light kept flashing and flashing and I couldn't hear anything spin up inside. I pressed the eject button and it wouldn't eject the DVD, I restarted the PC with no success in reading or ejecting the DVD.
So I turned the PC off and did the magic paperclip trick and the tray came out with my DVD. Upon boot up, I couldn't close it with the button.... it won't go in or out either.
My drive is a Samsung TS-H542A DVD burner which was purchased back in 2003 and is now in my media center PC. It's been running great until today....
Is there something I can do to fix it?? or can I trash it??

    Thanks.

Sounds like Copy Protection. I remember an audio CD I bought a while back that had some trashy Copy Protection that secretly installed a file whether you declined it or not which would mess up your drive. Thankfully, it was something that could be uninstalled, IIRC. See if there's something funky installed under Add/Remove programs. And look on the outside of the DVD case for any Copy Protection images.

Some have been known to permanently ruin drives, but that's hopefully not what happened here.

Could also be the drive belt slipping or broken, I've had lots of drives with that problem Usually the ones that do open and close reliably don't read discs

Also make sure the power connector is in tight. If the drive is only getting 5 volts and missing the 12 volts, none of the motors will work.

I watched this same DVD on the PC yesterday a few times and it was still OK this morning when I loaded up the Office 2007 DVD disc. Only when I put it in this afternoon, it didn't read and kept flashing....
Now when I turn on my PC, all I get is a flash from the DVD drive light and thats about it. Nothing else. It used to flash 5 or 6 times upon boot up as the drive spun up to check for discs etc.
I haven't opened up my PC either, it's been closed shut for at least six months now.... I'm actually doing this on purpose to see how much dust is inside the PC after a long period of time.... so far there's a layer of dust on the bottom of the case....
It's been raining down here in Sydney for the last few days, could moisture have an effect on this drive??
I have noticed many electronic items act up with problems these past two days, coincidentally it's raining outside too which makes me wonder.... I know for a fact though that whenever it rains, I get locked out of the car.... the remote doesn't respond to the alarm.

        Thanks.

          Re: It's stuck....

Sounds like a hardware issue with it to me (sounds like it trying to read but can't)
since its been in service for a few yeas it could be something along the lines of maxxarcade said. (moisture or condensation may have a roll in this) maybe just dust.

I would check what widows has to say about it, like if its installed ok etc.(just to be sure)
Then if you like try it in another system to be sure its the drive
Then you will probably have to see if you can find a basic service guide on the hardware...like how to check and clean things
someone here maybe a bit more familiar with this then I

These days its give use 50 bucks and we will give you a new one but they are sometimes repairable for little or no real out lay
They are mechanical devices so a lot faults tend to be of that nature
(of course this does not rule out electronics issues)

They are cheap enough to buy, but I know you like to try and fix things so no harm in trying
(just don't go twiddling any pots you may see, this will probably guarantee you never get it working again)

bit of luck a bit of a clean my sort it if it is a HW prob.....sometimes windows just gets it knickers in a knock with CD's had that too

Hope this is of some help

Logistics is talking about the rootkit crap protection I think.
$ony hired some mob to come up with a copyright protection method for thier cd's
They did, it used rootkit to avoid being detected (and broken) ..unfortunately it open up possible security risk so people wanted $ony's blood after that
none that I know of (from what I read) were released in OZ with it on it but thats not to say imports didnt get here that had this protection.

Heres the wiki on it anyway

I took the power cable out and reconnected the cable into the power connector and it booted right up and read the discs that I put into it. Hmm.... it seems that after a long while, the contact between the power connector and the drive may have become oxidised with the air or something like that?? When I took the power connector out, it required some force to take it out....
Anyway, thanks everyone. I can now watch the rest of my Borat DVD

Another thing with the power connectors, the female molex pins can get enlarged over time, causing poor contact, even if the plastic housing feels like it's fitting snug.

                                    Re: It's stuck....

I have a DVD of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the new version with Johnny Depp), and that refuses to play on PC or Mac DVD-ROM drives regardless of region setting. The drives act like the disc is inserted upside down and it can't read anything at all - though it does play on normal set-top DVD players. Is this some kind of non-standard file system for copy protection?

Regarding the problematic DVD drive, it sounds like the connectors on the molex weren't making a perfect contact. I doubt oxidation occurred, as that would require the parts of the pins that touch to be exposed to the air - and if they're touching, that can't happen Poor contacts can have a similar effect to a low voltage going into the device, and that can cause all sorts of symptoms.
You know there's something wrong when you open your PC and it has vented Rubycons...
