I can't pull the heatsink off!

I finally found a first generation socket 4 or 3 Pentium 1 CPU and the thing is massive! I really want to pull it's ugly heatsunk off and display the PENTIUM label beneath but this is where I am having real troubles.
First, the heatsink is attached without a clamp to the chip by a glue that looks like lite choclate. I would pry until it pops off but I am ascred of cracking the chip and ruining a piece of history.
Scraping it all away also seems useless because it is rathe stiff and I see at least two surface-mounted components on top if the ceramic chip.
Is there a trick or some chemical that can aid in removal?

And just if you are curious, it's at 66mhx and was made in 1992. It's no better than a 486 IMO.

okay, so it's out of the freezer and ready for the next step.
I can't see prying it off, i might break the now brittel chip, correct?

                    How?
I once broke a 386 when I was pulling it's heatsink off (except it was being done on a cold workshop). There was no warning and then *snap*.
I am just afraid I might do it again.

That happens often when the glue is hard.

Yeah I have an Intel OverDrive chip PR66 (66Mhz) that could be OC'ed to like 83Mhz (upping the bus speed), but the POS Biostar mobo crapped out

Providing I could locate a decent/compatible motherboard for it... I suppose it'd be good enough to run a Linux firewall/router system

Re: I can't pull the heatsink off!

I was given a Compaq server over thanksgiving, has a pentium 66 (socket 5), with the heatsink fused to the CPU, no fan, 32mb of EDO SIMM's, 540mb HDD, no CDROM, and a floppy drive... It came from a family member who bought it new in 94, paying over $4000.00 for it. The case is absolutely mint, so its kind of cool to keep around for nostalgic reasons... I actually have DOS 6.22 installed on it, and I use it to modify BIOS's.

                              Here's the irony:
It ran 24/7 for about 6 years as his office file server, they never shut it off. The capacitors are fine, and it's 13 years old and was used heavily... Go figure.

I have two of those overdrive chips and the diagnostic floppy for them!
My 486 used to run at 33 mhz but a DX4 overdrive boosted it up to a good 100 mhz!

Another correction, The pentium cpu is not 66 mhz, it's only 60.

I have peltir element glued to heatsink with something thick and sticky like putty... it cant be separate with force or heat without risk of breaking ceramic or damaged semiconductor layers due to force (eg if try twisted, pulled, lifted)... method that I am using is a single thread for needle (thin and firm thread of pure polyester that cant break with bare hands without glowes), and using it like a saw between heatsink and peltir. I holding a heatsink with knee against table. It slowly cut throug putty and release glued parts. It is slow proces, but preserve undamaged component and heatsink....

Seeking Advice on Enhancing Heatsink for Main Processor on SAMSUNG TV Motherboard
                                          by Ven
                                          Hello everyone,

I'm looking to upgrade the heatsink on the main processor of my TV's motherboard for better cooling performance.

The current heatsink is a square-shaped one (2.8cm x 2.8cn) with a basic design, and I believe a more efficient heatsink could help with thermal management and potentially extend the life of the TV.

I'd appreciate any advice on the best type of heatsink to use, specific product recommendations, and tips for installation.

If you've done a similar upgrade, I'd love to hear about your experience and any challenges you...

Till powering on, it is propper hot......

                                          Repair Success! Middle Atlantic UPS2200R-IP
                                          by valvashon
Yesterday I successfully repaired a Middle Atlantic UPS2200R-IP that had inadvertently been used as a surge suppressor at our transmitter site. It has already been replaced with an updated one but it's coming home with me now instead of being e-cycled. To be specific, this is the MA model that has the blue backlit display and has been discontinued, although this design may have been used in many UPS units including the smaller Middle Atlantic ones in this series.

Here's what happened: We experienced a brownout/surge at the site, which damaged the UPS and took our broadcasting...

                                          Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....
