Re: Antec TruePower380 & the Fuhjyyu Syndrome
That is pretty good isn't it? the low air flow can be an issue as we live in a pretty hot part of the country and experience high 30 and low 40's (Celsius) each summer, unfortunately something obstructed the fan on this unit and it began making some odd noise, on disassembly it was nothing more than a stray wire which required a replacement cable tie.
I inspected the capacitors whilst blowing 8 years of dust out and noted the 2200uF 16v had a misshapen top (as seen below), a 5 minute fix and all was well...

Re: Antec Earthwatts EA-500 500w PSU
Maybe... but it will certainly indicate if the capacitor is bad when no charge is held won't it? I'm not advocating it as the be all and end all of capacitor testing....

Re: Antec Earthwatts EA-500 500w PSU
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind... I used to get most of my SamXon gear through Big Pope (on these forums) a few years back and am always looking for a reliable supply of good quality capacitors.
That is interesting I had not heard that one before, from what I had read the 105c components were the ones to have because their service life was significantly longer than an 85c running at normal operational temps.
FWIW I've given this PSU a little additional "bolt on" cooling...

Re: Antec Earthwatts EA-500 500w PSU
Actually you can and I do using a slightly different process to that illustrated in the video above (thanks selldoor), remember capacitors are like batteries in the sense that they can accept, hold a charge and then discharge, what I do is use a 1.5v battery and determine if the capacitor in question can still accept, hold and discharge that current... simple but effective, the test will not however determine the capacitance value.
Yes that is my intention but I was contemplating going further and...Last edited by tazwegion; 07-22-2014, 01:13 AM.

Re: Antec Earthwatts EA-500 500w PSU
Yes that's the one on the 12 volt line (opposite end of PCB), this circuit employs a mix of...
1000uF 10v
1000uF 16v
2200uF 10v
3300uF 10v
3300uF 16v
330uF 400v
In an effort to cut down on units ordered I used 16v rated (low ESR) units for all the 1000uF capacitors, using a DMM I was able to determine with 100% accuracy the 12v line (capacitor locations), so as I said earlier I'm down to the last 3 capacitors, the one the right is for the 5v line but it's the capacitance I'm...Last edited by tazwegion; 07-20-2014, 07:36 PM.

Re: Antec Earthwatts EA-500 500w PSU
Well the parts I needed arrived and I had some spare time so I got stuck in hoping to finish this little project off today however... life happens and an interruption lead me to experience a conundrum.
I had 3 capacitors left to replace 2 2200uF and 1 3300uF 10v, using memory, old parts and the process of elimination I'm 99.9% sure I've got the correct locations sorted and using one of everell's pictures have illustrated their placement (the 3300uF appears larger than the 2200uF in the foreground).
Could anyone confirm...Last edited by tazwegion; 07-20-2014, 06:43 AM.

Re: Antec Earthwatts EA-500 500w PSU
No the primary capacitor is actually rated for 330uF, as for the OST's they would be replaced as a matter of course, I should still have sufficient SamXon's on hand...

Re: Antec TPII-480 replacement caps ?
Used capacitors are an unknown quantity in that they may be fine or die next week best to use new components in a mission critical system unless you're okay with replacing them in an ongoing fashion.
I understand you having difficulty sourcing suitable components at reasonable prices being in Australia myself but have had good experiences with the Hitano EXR series (low ESR) capacitors from Wiltronics in Ballarat Victoria and will buy Internationally when I must just not China/Hong Kong suppliers on eBay.
Thankfully...

Re: Antec Earthwatts EA-500 500w PSU
The primary capacitor that has died was a Nippon Chemi-con SMQ series (rated to 85c), whilst the remainder look to be Ost's, this board appears older than I originally thought with "ATX400w revision 5" clearly marked on the PCB along with the date 25/09/2006.

Antec Earthwatts EA-500 500w PSU
Antec Earthwatts EA-500 500w PSU...
I picked up a used one of these units recently for my 24/7 Broadcastify streaming computer, voltages checked as well within spec and were stable so in it went only to find it failed within 2 months corrupting the Motherboard Bios as well, thankfully the the MSI Bios-USB trick saved the board and refitting the FSP PSU got the system back up and running.
Inspection on disassembly indicated no obvious points of interested except for the domed 400v 330uF mains capacitor (this PSU is designed

Re: Radeon R9100 recap
You should grab an IR Temperature Gun like they use in Supermarkets to see what temp the stock is at (refrigerator maintenance checks), they're about $30 upwards
Amazon has some on clearance for $22Re: Radeon R9100 recap

Realistic DX-300 Communications Receiver
Realistic DX-300 Communications Receiver...
Some time ago I acquired an old Realistic DX-300 SW receiver (Ex Ansett Airlines), amassed opinion dictated this radio had a degree of AC hum even when new as did many products of this era, built around 1980 this radio had begun to exhibit AC hum with the incoming signals which is not exactly ideal as you could imagine whether or not you're an audiophile.
Unable to locate a suitable source of Samxon's I revisited Hitano Low ESR capacitors which had served me well in the past

G'day trodas,
At least you saved it from the landfill that's always a bonus in my book! additionally spare GFX cards come in quite handy especially when fault finding older systems

Re: Antec Truepower 380S
Excellent suggestion, many thanks!
No I used the best quality capacitors I had on hand at the time... the system has been run hard these school holidays without issue so considering the small outlay for parts I'm happy with the outcome...

Re: Antec Truepower 380S
Yes I have to say I thought the same thing... I pulled 2 x 1000uF 200v primaries from a dying Codegen 550w PSU and used those, so far the Antec has been running flawlessly though I really need to address the low RPM fan as it's in an Athlon 2100+ gaming system (2100's ran really hot right off the bat), thankfully the case is well ventilated
Yeah still it's a pity about the Panny's though
EDIT: I notice you like to toss bad caps into fires c_hegge......Last edited by tazwegion; 10-08-2011, 03:40 AM.

Antec Truepower 380S
I recently acquired an old Antec TP-380S and while I was removing the Fujjyyu capacitors (which looked remarkably intact) I noted that one of the primary input capacitors (Panasonic 820uF 200v) had a slightly domed top.
I've never bothered with the primaries before as they've always proven to be fine in past rebuilds... but I suppose there's always a first time eh? This unit is supposedly unique to Antec's Sonata case line up being fitted with only 1 (low RPM/noise) cooling fan instead of the usual Truepower Series configuration of 2, this may be the reason for the primary's degradation...

Re: Power supply life cycles...
It all depends on the particular piece of hardware and the value you place on it... personally although Antec's True-power & True-blue series PSU's only achieved 75% efficiency at best I still recap them for re-issue on home PC's, I'm not talking high end power hungry systems just run-of-the-mill trailing edge technology and the PSU's work admirably 2003~2011
