I'm totally done with netgear now. I've now had my 4th router play up in the space of 3 years.
The first one was a DG843G. It started to make a high pitched whine, and then it stopped getting the DSL Light. Thinking it might be bad caps, I recapped it with panny FK and FM (originally teapo), but it didn't help.
So, then I got another router from work, a Netgear DGN2000. It worked well for just under a year, and then the ethernet ports started to die. Ports 3 and 4 were totally dead, port 2 worked, but was very slow (browsing the internet felt like 56K, even though I had about 13mbps), and port 1 sometimes worked fine, but other times didn't work at all. I took it back to work, and my boss just swapped it for another DGN2000 off the shelf. After sending the original one back to netgear (was still under wty), they just sent it back unrepaired.
Several months on, the new DGN2000 is also having problems, this time with the wireless randomly dropping out. I popped the cover to check the caps and they were all lelon
While I wait for caps to arrive, just in case some have failed (none are bulging btw), I borrowed a new Netgear DGN1000 from work, and guess what? It's also having problems, after 1 week! The ADSL keeps dropping out.
If a recap and firmware update doesn't fix my DGN2000, I think I'm going with a Linksys X3000. (EDIT: Or maybe an SMC Barricade N Pro)
