    Stupid, Unreliable, Evil NETGEAR!!!

I'm totally done with netgear now. I've now had my 4th router play up in the space of 3 years.

The first one was a DG843G. It started to make a high pitched whine, and then it stopped getting the DSL Light. Thinking it might be bad caps, I recapped it with panny FK and FM (originally teapo), but it didn't help.

So, then I got another router from work, a Netgear DGN2000. It worked well for just under a year, and then the ethernet ports started to die. Ports 3 and 4 were totally dead, port 2 worked, but was very slow (browsing the internet felt like 56K, even though I had about 13mbps), and port 1 sometimes worked fine, but other times didn't work at all. I took it back to work, and my boss just swapped it for another DGN2000 off the shelf. After sending the original one back to netgear (was still under wty), they just sent it back unrepaired.

Several months on, the new DGN2000 is also having problems, this time with the wireless randomly dropping out. I popped the cover to check the caps and they were all lelon While I wait for caps to arrive, just in case some have failed (none are bulging btw), I borrowed a new Netgear DGN1000 from work, and guess what? It's also having problems, after 1 week! The ADSL keeps dropping out.

If a recap and firmware update doesn't fix my DGN2000, I think I'm going with a Linksys X3000. (EDIT: Or maybe an SMC Barricade N Pro)

I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

power supplies seem to be the issue on the netgear stuff i see.
a friend had one drop dead last night.he called for suggestions and we got it going over the phone by having him dig out his walwart tanglebox.
the worse failures are usually lightning strikes.
oh and cisco/linksys gear is on the do not buy or recommend list after their latest stunt.

I had a d-link after the first failure which I RMA'd I got the new one in and voided the warrenty pulled the top off and added 1 large heatsink and a couple of RAM heatsinks sorry I do not have a picture of it but it was ugly ran for around 2.5 years when I replaced it with a wireless N model. I got lucky it was not the power supply.

Go with a classic, find a Linksys WRT54GL and install dd-wrt.

IIRC, that one doesn't support Wireless N

Netgear is still my go-to brand for consumer routers/switches.
Way fewer failures than Linkshit and D-link in my experience.

why BUY a new router? find a old PC (pentium II+), make sure it has two network cards (onboard counts) and use pfsense. If you're like me you have tons of parts and shit people gives you. Find that old HP Pavilion desktop, a pci nic and install pfsense biatch

Honestly, I know why people don't do that. Because it's a pain in the ass, and time is worth more than the $40 a wireless router costs.

pfsense only supports G, but yes, you can get a wifi card and put it in turn it into infrastructure (access point) mode

                                        -consumes more power
                                        -more parts to fail
                                        -probably louder
                                        -physically louder
-time is worth money, it takes long to set up the thing; I, for one, don't have the time to screw with something like that. Maybe you do, but this world leaves little time for stuff like this
