What dood said, plus a little link to show some numbers confirming it nicely...

Please note that MMO's suffer from this much more, but due to their nature they are much harder to benchmark...

It's also worth noting that the particular article you linked was from 2008. The differences should be even greater today.

We actually have 2x Micron P300 100GB SLC SSD's in a RAID-1 on our new server for Techspot
Last reports I read, they were still buggy in RAID configs, especially raid0.... HMM, a pair of them in a raid1 for the OS and progs on my main rig though, but that would mean a reload....uhggg... I woudn't need ghastly large ones, I still run XP x64.....not overbloated 7.

How do people manage to fill up their hard drives? I haven't filled up my computer's 8GB hard drive yet.

            Lets see...

DVD "backups", music, software, various ISO's, pictures, etc. I've got over 750GB of "stuff" on my 3TB hard drive.

882gb of music alone, occupying a pair of 1TB WD blacks in a raid1. That music collection began in 1995 with the birth of the MP3 format. For those of you that remember AG's FTP search, I was always in their top 5 largest servers. The server grew so fast, they didn't make drives large enough, fast enough....so I started using SCSI raid5's (insanely expensive back then). If you knew all the software bootlegs I got in trade for logins to my MP3 server, you wouldn't say something so dumb.

I have another 1TB raid1 thats loaded with OS backups, programs, and other sordid things I use regularly around the shop. It's about 450gb.

You know in 5 years I'll be able to buy that for $299 at Best Buy using inflated dollars. Why should anyone but Bill Gates buy early?

a large SSD could carry my stuff, but just barely. my 320gb file server does fine as it is, no reason to upgrade (plus the thing has no SATA support w/o a card).

agreed, although most of my stuff comes from linux repositories... but if I were using windows primarily I'd do the same.

I wasn't trying to be rude....I just debunked your logic that large amounts of storage in an end-user/home environment is not useless.

Some other legit reasons, I also keep my photographs all orgnaized by date. I resize them for online posting, but I also keep the originals, unmolested....incase I need the high res later on. That consumes 22gb, just in pictures..... Why would I waste the time to upload those to an off-site backup/storage facility?! That's what RAID's are for. The music collection is also backed up onto a single drive and stored in a vault off site....just incase. Uploading 882GB to some off-site firm....are you out of your mind?! That would take months even on a good connect (which my connect's upstream blows goats).

Another legit reason....do some HD video editing in premiere, and see how large some of the raw projects can get... This is one area where I think an SSD would really shine.....video editing!! I can't wait to try this someday!

The story behind LibreOffice is as such: When Oracle bought Sun, who managed OpenOffice, some of the developers didn't like their new policies that exterted more control over the "open source" project. Thus, they literally made an exact clone of it, just with a green color scheme instead of a blue one, and they had LibreOffice. Thing is, it's updated more frequently and has more features because it's not restricted by Oracle. If you like OpenOffice but find that it's a bit uninteresting as far as features go, and you like the fact that LibreOffice doesn't waste your time upon started up by loading a "quickstarter" (another Sun/Oracle idiotic invention)... try it out! http://libreoffice.org/

I think what he may have been getting at here, was that an SSD which houses your OS will be separate from the hard drive on which you keep your stuff. So when your OS gets screwed up an you need to reinstall, your stuff is relatively safe. You could do the same thing with two normal hard drives as well.

Of course that doesn't account for other types of computer failure, so it's not really a backup, but safer than it would have otherwise been.

That's actually not where they shine.
The main reason for those insane speed boosts is the ultra low access time for small files (64KB and below, the biggest difference being 4KB and below). Any mechanical HDD will struggle to even get anywhere close to 0.5MB/s for files this small. Combined with design-related slow access times, that's your bottleneck right there.

That's why you get such an intense speed boost with a SSD. All the tiny system files and bits and pieces of programs.

Sure, the linear read/write speeds are higher too (quite a damn lot for recent SSDs), but that's more of a positive side-effect.

I posted about the difference in the "anyone running ssd's yet?" thread, comparing an "average joe" 1TB HDD to a 1GB CF card in terms of access times.
The CF easily dwarfed the HDD, despite being pretty "stupid" (simple controller, slow flash memory, not comparable to a real SSD and to make matters just a bit worse, in a noname USB cardreader).

Less than 200KB/s vs. 2.8MB/s. Not even considering access time, that's a massive boost. From a friggin CF card.

And showing that the CF card really isn't fast in terms of linear speeds

Now go ahead and size this up by a couple magnitudes for a real SSD insted of a redneck one (CF)

                                          Re: Ssd

it depends on the kind of video editing you do.

Indeed, for a simple raw video to compression it's not shining as even regular drives would work just the same. That's just grab chunk of video, grab chunk of audio , compress ... so it's just little seeking and the regular drives keep up.

It does change everything when you're doing several things in parallel.
For example, from time to time I have to encode about 100-200 10-20 minute movies within a couple of days, into a format that's suitable for web and compatible with every stupid person out there that has no clue about codecs.

So i had 1080p or 720p content which had to be resized to 480x360, logo of the company I worked for applied in a corner, hardcode subtitles to english if the persons were talking in other languages do some transitions and save to final product.

Up until a couple of months ago, the directive was to use XVID... but compression to that old standard is barely using 40-60% of 2-3 cores out of a quad core q6600.
As I have access to 2 x 12core AMD server, I can start 10 instances of xvid and allocate 2 cores to each and have the encodings run in parallel.

So it's just a matter of copying the 8-20 GB raw 1080p content to a SSD and start encoding - a regular hard drive would crap out when it has to seek in 20-30 places on the platters several times a second while the ssd drives don't sweat.

Nowadays, i switched to h264 and x264 encoder because the company wants to reuse to videos in flash online... xvid did 45-60fps with 2-3 cores at 60% , x264 does about 100 fps with all 4 q6600 cores at 85% so it's much more optimized.

                                            Hi all,

I have a Lenovo Legion 5 with a Ryzen 7 series CPU and RTX 3070 GPU. My issue is that it turns on and all seems fine except after a few seconds the fans spin up high and the laptop turns off after 34 seconds.
I can get into bios and can even boot and login to Windows however after 34 seconds no matter if Im at the bios screen or booted into Windows it will just turn off.

I have managed to run HWmonitor and the temperatures of the CPU and GPU are fine, I can also touch the heatsync which is warm but not hot.

I have tried a few new bios but exactly...

In the last few days, it looks like Firefox has changed their software terms so they are now evil and WILL sell your data.

Palemoon still supports Win7, but sometimes pages don't work properly. The Google Chrome browser might also still work for Win7.

I will have no choice but to upgrade my Firefox, so that I can copy dozens of tabs into a document or spreadsheet, or go through the history to...

I was able to clean it up, and remove all the shorts. I now can power the 3.3v rails from a bench power suppy while connecting the laptop to its psu, and I get the additional 5valw, 1.8v, and 1.05v, form what I can tell in the schematics, those are the only 4 voltages I should see before turning on, and they are present. When I hit the power button, the power indicator on the left side turns on (not the one on the power button), stays on for about 12 seconds, then turns off for...

                                            Good evening, gentlemen.

I have a problem with my monitor. It turns off after a few seconds or flickers. Shining a flashlight on the screen doesn't show any image, so I guess it's not the "2 seconds to dark" I read in the forum.

To turn it back on, I have to press the power button twice. Then after a few seconds it turns off again or flickers. See video.

A Harman/Kardon AVR 645 repair has been a hobby of mine for the past several years. My latest attempt involved the purchase of a DOA unit for part swapping and testing. The original AVR would power up then shut down after a few seconds. I completely tore down both units, found a couple of bad components and reassembled one of them. Same issue, no speakers connected. After extensive research I found a repair document from Harman/Kardon that explains the protection circuit in fantastic detail and provides specific test points for each fault (power, DC detection, overload & power) and the voltage...
