Mr. George and his laptop quest

    Philips Freevents X50 - 1.73Ghz pentium m 740, 512mb, 60gb, dvdrw, 12.1 screen, 1.78kg, wifi, 3 usb

    euro 1.099

are these any good? who makes them? one of the guys in the office wants one.

i was pushing for a fujitsu cos then i know there is support. these philips are exclusive to one chain of stores here and you know what that means about support.

I'm afraid that the support will be bad - something like Sony.

      Re: Philips Laptops

no i think it will be worse. apparently there is no support pages from philips. also quite a few complaints about touchpad issues. doesnt come with any cds, everything is preinstalled only. (tsk tsk).

anyway appears to be a rebadged twinhead 12D
      http://www.twinhead.com/product_note...n_notebook.asp
and drivers available on their site

i bet he buys it lol........

yes the name is rather strange and amusing. i was researching some more.

          here is a review
twinhead stylebook 12d review (german google translated)

gigabyte N211U same thing built also by twinhead

the gigabyte looks more attractive although the philips is silver not white

The expandability is limited actually only on the CCU possesses the Notebook of two memory module card locations, but those are not accessible and only to the Reseller accessible, which opens the Notebook with special tool.
what tool? there is an opportunity to purchase another tool? : hehehe i have most torx

i did not understand why the gigabyte hits 73oC cpu ouch! (full load 12 hr burn in) whilst the twinhead hits 47oC.

          looks lilke flybook plastic crap

I have always been able to open stuff with special srews, I just make my own tool by grindding down the end of a file

lol remember the p4 packaging before they changed it. when you had to break the seal and it was difficult. i sent several p4s flying across the office opening those.

i saw the philips today. it looks attractive and build is ok. screen is not one of the brightest. unfortunately he is going to buy it lol.

Just a thought willawake. I can't find the link but MS will not support XP Home as long as it is going to support XP Pro. In a few years time those with Home will be milked for an upgrade.
                        Found it http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060103-5891.html

If your buyer has Office 2003 or Office XP on his home PC that license/CD can be used to install and activated his lappy. To be read here in unclear English http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/activation_faq.mspx

I have just read the above and have no first hand experiance. Don't own a lappy.

Sorry for the alarm, as I had not read that artical from ARS Technica in awhile and the link at the bottom does state that XP Home support has been extended "quietly"

Yea, MS realized that since Vista had been so delayed there would be no "new" OS to buy before "Home" expired

Advice or experiences with laptop service and dependability is of great interest to me.
I'll just mention my ones. (may stir up some comments)
I am now on the Gateway solo, kept outside on lanai.
Also there's an older Satellite out here, both are folding but not much horsepower.
These are dependable but large, I only close the lid for a hurricane.
Two NEC Versa's nice and slim light weight, all batteries weak but working.
Two more Satellites, don't use much. One controls the ER1 robot.
All Thinkpads have gone dead, memory control issue and looks like planned oblsolescence.
Seen many bad Dells, seen some bad HPs but fixing the laptops is only a hobby for me, not my business. Sorry for the long FYI, maybe move this somewhere.

actually i could not see any people whose computers i fix running linux. they struggle enough with windows. on the server side i fully believe in the benefits of linux and the desktop side has indeed come a long way. otherwise i could not care what desktop os they run as long as it is stable and requires minimal training from me. they want xp and i have no problem with that.

I spend more time cleaning, defragging, and updating my 1 XP machine that my wife and kids mostly use than anything I do on my other comps. Fedora Core and other bleeding edge distros are fun as well. BTW Fedora Core 5 rocks if any one hasn't used it yet.

We were all Linux for a while, but I got sick of Wine config for all their stupid games.

It does power up when pressing the power button.

I already try the power button while plugin the plug with no result.
Also put the latest firmware autorun-TPM191E_R.001.004.100.000.upg on a MBR/FAT32 USB stick at USB port2 with no result either.

Could this be an PSU or eMMC issue ?

                                          Hello,

I've got a really strange issue with the speakers on my Philips 43PUS7506/12. It makes this awful loud buzzing now. It happened after it was attempted to be wall mounted - I think the back got squeezed and something broke.
I thought maybe the speakers got damaged, so I replaced them - no dice.
                                          • Using the internal speakers, it always happens.
                                          • Using the headphone jack, it never happens.
                                          • Using the digital/optical out with a soundbar - it happens after about 2h/movie runtime - it's never as drastic, it just pops in and out, but I didn't want it to damage the sound bar

                                          Hello Team,

New issue on LCD panel where I need to find out the cause and the potential solution.
This is on the Philips 50PUH6400, the LCD panel is an INNOLUX V500dk2 xrs1.

I have image, on the right side, the image is more or less normal even if there is a small blur on edge, on the left there is an issue.
When moving up and down in the menu on the right the image is slow to disappear, and is darker, like red/brown.

I've checked voltages, no issue found comparing right and left side of the panel driver.
VHG VGL CKV... are the sames on...

Activate power board Philips 40PFH40009/88 tv

                                          Hello partners.

Could someone tell me how to make this Philips TV source work without the mainboard being connected? The model of the board is EAX65423701 (2.1) and the model of the Philips TV is 40PFH40009/88.
The TV is dead, there is no standby light, however there is a voltage of 12v on the pins ( included 12v VAU ) and 3.2v on the PS-ON pin (see photo) when the power board is connected to the main board. If I disconnect both boards I only get 8 volts on 12v pins. I would like to rule out a fault in the main board by making it work, but so far no one has been able to tell...

Philips 65PUS8518/12 distorted image after main board replacement
                                          by tuner2000i
                                          hello everyone,

I don't normally do tv repairs but this is a case with my personal TV which got fried together with many other electronics in my house after a thunderstorm.

The TV is a Philips 65PUS8518/12 which had no power. I measured and concluded that the main board was probably fried through ethernet or hdmi. I found a board with same number 715GD328-M0F-B00-005Y (I had G) but from a 55PUS8518. The TV starts but the image is doubled, distorted. I need to set the panel code which is 016 according to the sticker on the back but I can not seem to do it.
