Believe me, if you defrag and move stuff to the beginning, you're probably gonna notice. Also, HDDs can be quieter.

Currently I'm sitting at 14% file fragmentation and 7% total (according to the Windows XP defragmenter). This is after about 5 years of use. My hard drive (80 GB) is filled up just a little more than halfway. Haven't checked my other computers.
I believe it's slllloooowwww! Even 2 percent is bad! Let alone 14 percent!

And the defragmentation utility that comes with XP, has trouble detecting fragments. By the time it acknowledges, it's overdue!

I use PerfectDisk 7 Yes it is a older version but it does a good job and lets me schedule network drives and supports storage groups. It wasn't free but I have to say I have gotten my $ worth out of it. I can clearly see speed increases before and after running it on several applications, esp those with many small files that change frequently.

                Re: a good free defragmentor?

At 14% fragmentation any defrag program is going to take some time to get done cooking the first time you use it. Also different defrag progies work somewhat differently. On the first run it has to rework the whole drive so the defrag progie you use is happy with it. I think the most frags I have ever had was around 8%. This was after severial crash outs because of a bad video card. Your speed will also increase after a good defrag. I run my defrag every two or three days or when ever my speed starts to fall off. My Add Ware progie is always active and I run a scan everyday.
This next part I say jokingly. We don't have "Monitors" on this site. We have "Moderators." When we get to fighting like kids in the school yard they jump right in a take control of the situation...LOL All you have to do to start a war here is post anything that is even remotly Windows-vs-Linux...LOL Now lets see if a new war starts all over again because I said "windows-vs-linux" on this thread. I hope not. The most vocal supporter of linux here has to be RatDude. I've learned to keep my mouth shut because I use both...LOL Master of neither.

I am in no way trying to flame you RD. You use the hell out of Linux and you are good with it. I on the other hand can just manage to get by with it. If somebody has a Linux issue it would make the most sence to ask you about fixing it not me don't you think? I use the hell out of Xp and most of the time when it gets sick I can bring it back to life. Lets have a RD. Still friends?

No, not really. At least I can't notice. Now, when I still had AVG Free on that computer - yeah, then it was real slow. Ever since I removed that piece of shit, my computer has been so much faster that I don't feel like it needs anything else done to it.

I also just checked my other computer too - that one is at 15% file fragmentation and 7% total. A defrag probably won't help it much, though, because the hard drive is running in DMA Mode 2 (the Intel 810 chipset in it won't go higher for some reason). It still boots in under a minute and is very responsive - which is all I care about anyways.

I recommend MyDefrag. That will sort files to the fastest part of HDDs!

(The beginning regions.) The first 1 GB is the fastest part of HDDs.

There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.
