    Samxon recap

Just want to thank 'Big Pope' for the caps he sent me. I have successfully recapped a motherboard and PSU, and although I haven't tested the MB yet, the PSU runs.

    I just have some questions:

I replaced a handful of caps on a rebranded Deer PSU, as although it didn't show any major problems before hand, the caps were bulging. I had hoped this replacement would have fixed an issue I did notice, namely, a multimeter test showed only ~ -10.5v on the -12v rail. Even at this level, it had still powered a system fine for a long time.

The MB I did recap was an old socket A Soltek, and ill give it a go as soon as I get some ram for it. But there was also another newer socket A MB, and I had planned on fixing that too but somehow I ended up one cap short from those Big pope sent. Either I lost it, or not enough were sent, I'm not sure as I didn't count them before is started (but I can't complain, free is free), regardless, it leaves me one cap short of a functioning MB which is very annoying.

Some of the caps I put in the PSU are the same as I need for the MB, given its weak voltage, would you recommend I ditch the PSU? Or can someone help me out with a donation?...

    Thanks in advance

    Tim

What PSU? Any photo here? Do you have reverse the voltage (position and negative)?

Or make a wrong voltage caps(12v rail used with 6.3v or 10v)?

    Thanks.

Its a 'Hyena LC-A350ATX' if that means anything.

To clarify, this problem existed long before i replaced the caps, i had hoped it was due to the bad ones, but obviously not.

I would dump the PSU if its the least bit questionable. A flaky PSU is your worst enemy when battling a finicky PC.

Ok, so get rid of the PSU.

The thing is i dont really want to spend too much getting this system going, so that rules out a branded PSU. Would an unbranded cheap psu do the job? At least for a while?

I'd pick up a 300 watt Fortron or the like for it. The new ones don't last forever, but even if it does fail, the rest of the computer will be OK. You can get one for around $30 US shipped, I don't know how things are down there.
You know there's something wrong when you open up a PSU and are glad to find Teapos.
Why I don't buy cheap cases!

                  Thanks for the replies,

Yeah, i think thats what ill do. But im still stuck with what to replace it with. No signs of 'Fortron' here, available PSU brands in the price range im looking at are:

                  Hyena (again?), iCute, Excel, Colorsit...

Theyre probably all the same thing...

Would it really be that bad getting one of those? Do they suck out of the box? There is a 350W Hyena, the same model number as the broken one, with a 2 year warranty...

I'm afraid so. Are you not able to find any of the (older, even) Enermax-branded models? They can be quite reliable (in my experience) and generally not too expensive...

New Enermax's are too much, but i did find this:

                      http://www.trademe.co.nz/Computers/C...n-67863153.htm

What do you think? Can 2nd hand old PSUs, even branded, be trusted?

i would take it, enermax are good for several years (e.g. at least 3 to 4 years, if not longer). The only od thing on them, is the very bad fual fan desing, wich is not more than an air short, e.g. it blows the warm air back in to the case.

That does depend on which model we're dealing with though - the "coolergiant" series for example has a standard "push-pull" setup with 80mm fans .

grab that enermax and do a premptive recap.they are ok.
pull those new samxon from the hyena and put em in the enermax.
