    Vizio E470i - A0 hit by Lightning

I have a Vizio E470i - A0. The TV was hit by lightning and is completely dead! Nothing happens when I try to tun it on either by remote or by the power button on the back. I was referred to Badcaps by ShopJimmy.com. Shop Jimmy, as you may know, offers YouTube videos of how to check your TV then sells you the parts to fix it.
The test they referred me to do was checking for voltage at the Vout 1 and Vout 2 pins on the Main Board. Both they said should have at least 100 volts. Both mine had 0 volts. This would indicate that my board needed replacing. The board is # 0500-0614-0270.
My question is, would the lightning strike cause the same thing as just a failure of the Board itself? Is the test I did for voltage accurate for a set hit by lightning?
    Thank You

Lightning can wreck havoc with a TV. The PS is the first buffer (victim) of a strike. I would guess that a strike didn't go any further than the PS, unless you received a direct strike on your power lines outside. If that was the case, the surge could have destroyed ALL the boards on the TV.

I would repair / replace the PS only. If that didn't fix the problem, I would trash the set.

Thank you for the information and suggestion. I actually think the lightning came through the Ethernet port as the TV was hardwired for internet rather than wireless. The router for my DSL was destroyed as well. The Dish Network “Joey” box was also fried and had to be replaced. It was connected by HDMI. Thus my hesitation to replace the PS board as it may be the least of my problems.

Your main board is more likely to be damaged, surges can come through via many connections between TV and other connected device.
You can test the power supply board by itself to see if it even has the standby Voltage at this point.
You will get a lot more help by providing good clear pictures of the boards.
Power supply board can be tested by itself, but we need to see what you have first, so we need to see the pictures of YOUR boards.

These are of the board I am dealing with. The only test I had been advised to preform was a test of 2 connections that I am pointing to in the third picture.
I read and watched a video that said test for voltage at Vout1 and Vout2.
Each should be 100 volts. Mine are zero. The number on the board is:
              0500-0614-0270.

Re: Vizio E470i - A0 hit by Lightning

Lemme help you a little with the troubleshooting process:
With a unit like that, you always go and check if the PSU is making STBY Power that goes to the main board. Then you try to turn the TV on and check on the PSU the PSon and the BLon that come back from the main board to the PSU to turn the PSU fully on. That tells you where the problems are. Just checking the backlights like that is the wrong approach here, since you don't know of the main board works or not.

My hunch on this is what budm said. Probably lightning has gotten into the main board through the HDMI port, which could leave the main IC either partially or totally fried. You are somewhat in luck here, since the main board actually has an hdmi switching IC. It could be that it got fried and nothing else on the main board. Anyway... check the STBY power, then the PSon and BLon. Then we proceed from there.

                ... and better pics, please.

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
                    by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

                    Assuming...

                    Hi.

picked up another TV. This time is a Vizio M65-C1. TV does not turn on. I had repaired another 60 inch vizio , Bad main board.
When power button is pressed, the Power led indicator on the bottom right, turns for a few seconds and then it fades away. No backlight or Vizio logo on screen. Removed back cover and repeated test.
This is the TV This TV is a little different from the Samsung I have worked on. Power supply is on the Left side, Main Bd is on the right side, T-CON , not in the picture is on the bottom. I am assuming that the boards in the middle are the LED...

                    Failure Symptom

No picture, just red vertical stripes. Google search shows quite common problem for these recent Vizio M series although red vertical stripe pattern may differ. Some call it "Netflix" boot screen haha.

                    Where is the short?

Panel has 4x buffer boards. Quickly found the 1/4 panel buffer board with the problem by selectively disconnecting buffer board flex cables.

Having recently fixed another Vizio with similar symptoms that was a shorted ESD diode array ( link ) Probed the ESD diode array but...

Vizio SmartCast TV software bug that looks like hardware
                    by howardc64
Bug looks like hardware so thought I posted it here. Exact same behavior on 2 different model 4K Vizio TVs running their SmartCast smarttv software. After launching youtube app, press vizio button on remote to return to the smarttv menu, once in awhile, a column of bad pixels will show for few seconds on the left hand side.

It seems the vizio software is reinitializing hardware when returning to the smarttv menu. In general, SmartCast software isn't very good. Also will randomly (relatively infrequent) get no network connection when on wifi and require reboot....
