Sony KDL-32NL140: Powers On w/ Backlights, Black Screen - Bad TCON?

(originally posted in power supply forum, reposted here)

Got a Sony KDL-32NL140 that turns on to a black screen w/ backlights. I've pulled the back cover and confirmed that they are on. No sound to be heard.

Attached are the top and bottom pictures of the TCON from ShopJimmy (not enough light right now to take decent photos of mine). Readings are as follows:

    F1 fuse:

    00.2 ohm while unplugged
    OL diode mode
Using chassis ground as neg, both ends measure 11.97v. Shouldn't this be 12?

On the bottom on the TCON are measure points. They are as follows:

    GND
    INSDA_1 3.32
    INSCL_1 3.32
    FWP_1 3.33
    VCC_1 3.33

There are two tabs connecting to the LCD.

Removing the left one shows a screen of gray on the left, white on the right. At first, it almost looks like denim jeans. After a minute,
both sides become smooth with the gray side almost on par with the white side.

Removing the right one shows a 2 inch white vertical bar on the left side, followed by gray until the middle,
then another 2 inch white vertical bar, ending with gray til the end of the screen. No "denim" effect is shown.

Ordering a new TCON is around 20 bucks. I'd like to rule out a bad panel first.

    Questions:

What else can I test to rule on the TCON?

What can I do to test the panel, especially in checking for good tab bonding?

    With cables connected:

    VGL -6.32
    VGH 26.80
    AVDD 15.73
    VGMA 15.29

    Without:

    VGL -6.34
    VGH 26.80
    AVDD 15.75
    VGMA 15.28

Pretty much the same both ways.

Can you plug a DVD player or something similar into it via a Scart lead. I find very often that switching the DVD off then ON, the TV defaults to that input and so you can hear if there is sound.
Willing to help but I'm no expert.

Unless an admin moved my original post from the Power Supply forum to here, there shouldn't be.

I'll get the pic you requested here in a bit.

Do you have oscilloscope to check the LVDS signals feeding the T-CON? So far it looks like the T-CON has good dcv.

I don't but the more I get into TVs, the more it seems I'm going to need one. Recommend one?

At this point I would try that new T-CON board, if there were shorted circuits in the panel then I would expect the VGH, VGL to be really low.

I'll get one ordered ASAP. BTW, what are normal reading for VGH and VGL? Or does it differ significantly from model to model?

They (VGL, VGH) look about right:

TCON arrived, installed, no change. I took the TV apart further and have access to the panel circuit boards if you'd like to for to test certain points.

Still playing with it, so far it's failed the flashlight test, this link suggested wiggling the LVDS cable in an effort to get *some* response onto the screen, still nothing.

I'm guessing a bad panel but how do I know for sure? What can I do?

One more bump for the road. Next I'm going to try heating up the tab bonds a bit and see if I can get anything. I'm stuck between a bad panel and maybe a main board.

I hate recycling stuff when I can't explain why it's broke.

Took the main board off and noticed multiple areas of discoloration. This isn't normal, is it? The set is from 2008, so...

Live and learn, my man. I don't have a problem with getting another main board but I am interested in if there is a way to test panels that aren't cracked. Is there a method?

EDIT: Actually, I can clarify why I went with TCON: My last TV repair adventure didn't have a picture or sound either. Turns out it was stuck on an AUX input; I never thought to hit the INPUT a few times to see if it would go a static channel. I did that with this one but to no avail.

there are no effective method for normal user like you an me to know if there are hidden panels that aren't cracked. unless eyes or power on or further oscilloscope signal measure according service manual given from manufacturing brands only.

Wait there, so even with a Tcon its the same failure ? If so I would say panel fault, possibly tab bonds. Also its normal for the Mb to get warm and discolor the Pcb like that.
