Sharp LC-65N7000U TV
Issue: Dim display
Solution: Replace backlights. Possible panel issue?
When the TV is turned on, it shows a good picture but the brightness looks to be about a quarter to half brightness despite turning the brightness to 100. Upon factory reset, backlights began fluctuating. This indicates either backlight issues (likely) or a problem with the panel itself.

Common Failures on a GE Fridge Board Example (WR55X10775, WR55X11072 200D4852G025)
I've worked on more than a few of these boards and the outlined parts in red seemed to be the most common. These board vary in parts, especially the number of relays on them. The part numbers listed in the title are examples.
These boards (like most appliance boards nowadays) have a kind of protective shellac coated on them. I use professional strength Good Off on solder joins to remove what I can so I can get good contact with my meter leads.
A schematic exists showing what each relay is responsible but I don't have that handy right now....

(SOLVED) - Panasonic TH-50PZ80U - No HDMI
Issue: Panasonic TH-50PZ80U works fine but has no HDMI output.
Easy solution: replace main board.
Advanced solution: replace HDMI chip on main board.
Unless you've got the time, tools and the hands of a surgeon, skip the advanced solution. For you beginners out there reading this, you would need to use a combination of a heat gun, flux, solder, and probably a microscope to succeed. If there is someplace you can send the board in for repair, you can go for that. From what I've read elsewhere, I don't think this TV will even do 720p.
If none...

Re: can you damage screen panel with high voltage
Be careful, though: it is possible to damage a new tcon due to a fault with the panel.

Yes, it is possible.

(SOLVED) - LG 60LA8600-UC Turns On, Turns Off 2 Seconds Later. No Video.
Issue: LG 60LA8600-UC Turns On, Turns Off 2 Seconds Later. No Video.
Solution: Main Board EBT62529302 had L7201 & Q2302 visibly blown. Tried to replace these 2 parts from a similar LG board, TV would turn on and show no video. Replacement unavailable and who knows if the panel is damaged. TV will be recycled.
LG stands for Likely Garbage.

Re: (SOLVED) - ONN 100012588 No Power, Then Rebooting After Main Board Change
Yes, you are correct on all 3 posts. I practice discharging the main filter capacitor or at least check for an errant voltage upon powerdown. What surprised me was the 450v corner capacitor on the power board still had a charge. Strangely enough had I not received the shock, I probably wouldn't have figured out anything was wrong because like I said the TV turned on.
In the 10 years I've been repairing TVs, I've never had one turn on and yet there's an issue with the power...

(SOLVED) - ONN 100012588 No Power, Then Rebooting After Main Board Change
ONN 100012588
Issue: No Power, Then Rebooting After Main Board Change
Short answer: replace main board and power board
Technical answer: replace main board and Q306 & Q307 on power board.
Long answer:
TV wouldn't turn on. Power switch was fine which means the main board isn't processing the power on signal. Replaced main board. TV turns on now but randomly reboots. Bad main board? EEPROM? Tried to pull main board and got a shock touching the corner of the board. That's weird. C334 (450V 10uf) capacitor is still holding a high charge....

Re: (SOLVED) - Funai FW55D25F - High Pitched Squeal Upon Power-on.
Thanks for asking. I remember a long time ago I encountered a TV with a similar issue; it was a single solitary surface mounted cap that went out on a main board. I wish I could remember the model number but I do remember getting the answer here in the forums. I just got lucky in that I was able to troubleshoot the exact area instead of hunting for it. Hard to believe something so tiny can take out the entire TV.
The whining sound would go away if I disconnected the main board from...

(SOLVED) - Funai FW55D25F - High Pitched Squeal Upon Power-on.
Issue: Funai FW55D25F - High Pitched Squeal Upon Power-on.
Solution: Replace C3208 and C3209 on main board. These are surface mounted capacitors. Values unknown so I just used same physical size capacitors from a donor board.

(SOLVED) Sharp LC-46SB57UN Takes a couple to turn on and then no video.
Solution: Replace main board. I didn't in this case and ended up scrapping the TV.
This particular set is known for losing its 5V standby. There are repair kits available for this issue and a couple threads addressing that issue here in the forums. This particular issue addresses the TV taking a few tries to turn on and when it did, there was no video, and nothing lit up. I'm assuming the main board wasn't sending the signal to turn the backlights on. Power switch was tested and confirmed working.
A replacement main board on ebay is around $200, not worth it in...

(SOLVED...KINDA) - D50u-D1 has standby light but won't turn on.
Short answer: main board.
Long answer:
Someone gave me a Vizio D50u-D1 that had a standby light but would fade out when the power button was pressed. No video, no backlight, may as well as be unplugged. Research indicated a bad main board which I could replace with a used one for $50 or a rebuilt one for $65. Either way, what's the point? If it's designed to bake itself to death in 5 years (TV is a 2015 model), why bother?
For the hell of it, I tested the LEDs. They were fine. Power button? Working just fine. Once again, why bother doing anything else? Just...

Re: Vizio D50u-D1 - Worth repairing?
Everything is leaning towards scrapping it instead of repairing it. I don't need to repair it. Blah. I just hated throwing away stuff that can be fixed but what's the point if it's just going to die a natural death in a couple years....

Vizio D50u-D1 - Worth repairing?
I'm pretty sure I know the answer but here goes: got a Vizio D50u-D1. I know the main board is bad. I can replace it with a used one for $50 or have it rebuilt for a few dollars more. I just wonder if it's worth it? Just seems to me that another board is going to eventually bake itself to death or the LEDs are going to burn out.
I'm thinking no. What do you think?

Re: Sony STR-DE697 - Bad Transformer. Replacement? Unknown Value!
SUCCESS! The cap was fine. Apparently a ribbon cable worked itself loose from the a board (digital board?). I started at the power button and worked my way back and there it was. She turns on now. Man, that was fun! Thank you all for the help!
But i'm still in the dark about how 9VDC can come from 6.3VAC. If there is a link I can read, please post it. I realize I don't know everything I should but I learned a lot about transformers with this one.

Re: Sony STR-DE697 - Bad Transformer. Replacement? Unknown Value!
Thank you for this info. It helps.
I ended up buying this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/PHILMORE-TR012-120VAC-TO-12-6V-CENTER-TAP-CT-6-3V-0-6-3V-0-3A-POWER-TRANSFORMER/401643890095?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
Attached is a picture of it. Used the two black for the primary, one red and one green for the secondary. Did I do that right? Tested by itself, output is around 8VAC. Too high? I can see why this should have worked but it...

Re: Sony STR-DE697 - Bad Transformer. Replacement? Unknown Value!
No relay click or standby light was my first clue. Relay tested fine.
Primary side of transformer has 3 poles, measured OL on all of them. I know this isn't the best way to test these things but it's good enough for me.
Even if I'm wrong, I'd like to learn how to tell what is needed for a replacement if a direct replacement isn't available. I'm missing something simple, I just know it.
For those of you following along at home, attached is the schematic...Last edited by JDC; 10-05-2020, 12:58 PM.
