VIZIO E550i-B2 Sound - No Video Problem

I recently acquired a 55" Vizio Smart TV with intermittent video (actually, no backlight). The previous owner said that it would work for a while, then NOT work for days. When I brought the TV home, everything was working properly. After a few days, the backlight just went dark. A check of the power supply showed ~21V being properly output - but not getting to the LED driver board - connector CN202 had no voltage on it.

Removing the PS board revealed that the backside of connector CN202 had EVERY SOLDER JOINT FRACTURED!

    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/attach...1&d=1461431331

After some rework of the solder joints to remove the lead-free solder and put down regular 60-40.

When reassembling the PS board back into the chassis, EXTREME CARE should be observed, since the CN202 connector requires a LOT of force to properly mate. If you do not support the pins during mating, THEY MAY FRACTURE AGAIN! So, do NOT use pressure on the board, but put the pressure on the PINS! The joints are fracturing because the PS board is single-sided and only have support on the metal side.

This was awesome. However, mine broke on the power board side. I removed the power board and the driver board as a pair and touched up both sides.

Once again thank you very much.

Mine also broke on the PS side. The pins on the PS are extremely sensitive to fracturing due to the PCB being only single sided.

You guys are awesome!!!! I had the same exact problem on my e550i. All solder joints were fractured on the PS side of the connector. Obviously a design flaw by Vizio. Anyway, I desoldered all of the joints and resoldered each one, reassembled everything and it works perfectly. Highly recommend that anyone that has no picture but does have audio start here. Most likely this is the issue.

Thanks for the info. I had a E550i-B2E with the exact same symptoms. Took the power and LED boards out together and saw cracking in the connector solder joints on the power supply board. Desoldered the pins, glued the connector to the board, and reflowed the solder and it fixed my set! Now to try the same fix on my daughter's TV (same one, slightly different problem).

Just a me too to say thank you to the original poster for documenting this. I think every joint on one side was bad, I'm surprised that the thing worked even intermittently.

Probably the solder was originally under tension. Since solder will flow under tension, they probably fractured one-by-one until none remained connected.

Add another one to the list
                  Same problem and same fix.
I glued connector 1st then I took out both boards at the same time
Re-soldered and it has been working perfectly for 2 months now
I wish I would get in more of these.
An easy fix makes the day go better

Thought I'd add another one to this thread.

Just trash picked one of these, of course CN202 had all broken solder joints. I'll have to let the screen dry thoroughly, before I call the set good / bad, as it sat out in the rain before I picked it up, plus the screen has some scratches, although not physically broken.

On another note: I've trash picked like 20 LED TV's with bad backlights over the last several months, I'm not impressed at the rate they fail, many were fairly new, good screens, burnt led strips...

To properly dry the screen, you have to take the panel completely out. Check to make sure no water has wicked between the two glass panels - if not, then you should be okay.

The better way to repair the connector is to remove both boards at the same time, resolder the connector, then reinstall both boards as one unit. This keeps the stress on the connector to a minimum.

Yeah I've read about taking the panel out / layers to clean, but I'll give it a few days in a warm room with a small heater and see if it clears up; the water spot has already started to shrink, so I'll see after a few days. I had another set with water behind LCD in the past that did go away after some time, so we'll see on this one I guess.

I kept it quick for now for basic testing, simply removed the old solder, then re-soldered it with fresh. If any problems come up with that, I'll try the other method you suggest.

Sad that a lot of this model probably got trashed, for such a simple problem with the connector.

                        Thanks!

Need some advice. I have the problem of no sound but can see the picture in a darkened room and a flashlight. A new power supply did not fix it. Which board should I replace next? No visually damaged components, and unfortunately, I don't have the capacity to repair boards. Thanks!

My first guess would be bad LEDs in the backlights.

Check to see if you have boosted DCV between the two pads where cap TC6 is not installed. The LEDs are in the panel which is the common failure for TV with LED backlights.

BTW, you did do the inspection for bad solder joints per post 1?

Thank you, budm. I did check out the solder joints and there was no cracking and the connector was solid.
Unfortunately it's not cost effective for me to do component repair. I called ShopJimmy for some guidance on my swaptronics effort but they told be to post here for help on Badcaps. Consensus looks like the LCD board is my next swap out since the new power supply didn't do the job.

If you have or can borrow a multi meter we can advise you what to test/how to test the boards that way you should be able to narrow down the faulty board/part the trouble is with second hand parts they can be faulty too we have seen this numerous times

I would throw it away as it is probably bad leds which are harder to change than just swapping boards. Really why should we waste our time trying to help you when you are unwilling to even take a voltage test like budm suggested.

Dude, I have a few screwdrivers and no diagnostic tools. Did you even read my posts? I'm just a guy trying not to spend $500 on a new TV. I was told by Shop Jimmy this was a good source for advice. However it appears this is not the place for the "average Joe" to venture and my presence has upset you. Thanks for the warm welcome.
