    needed: a good DTV antenna

I recently canceled TW Cable TV. Yippee! Local broadcast TV is okay, but I am receiving less than half of the available channels. Does anyone know a good DTV broadcast antenna? Or even a good DTV antenna design. Here are my qualifiers:
    1. inexpensive, under $25 or, even better, $20
    2. standalone, does not need to be mounted
    3. indoors
    4. passive preferred, but powered okay
    5. 40-mile effective radius of reception (30-mile minimum)

Thanks in advance for suggestions and recommendations.

PS: Help! I can't watch Jeopardy.

Perhaps one of the DIY designs? There are a couple of different designs. I use the 4 gang bow-tie I made with ok results considering where I live.

so what happens if you take a crap set-top antenna and put a small parabolic dish behind it?
just curious because it works well for wifi / bluetooth, but those are in the Ghz band.

If a parabolic dish works well for wifi, that's because the head is acting as an antenna. It's nothing to do with the dish.

The dish works well for satellite signals which are typically beamed across a large area. The parabolic dish focuses the radio signal onto the LNB head, which then downmixes it and shoves it down the coax cable.

Certainly, such a setup would do no good for a broadcast signal. You'd get exactly the same behaviour if you took the dish off and pointed the LNB-style receiver straight at the source.

Have made several 4 bay bow tie antennas but have not tried them indoors other than in the garage and work ok when in just the right position. Another decent DIY is the "stealth hawk antenna" found on youtube. Made mine out of 8 gauge solid grounding wire. We have it outside on house eave and wife doesn't complain about reception. It gets about 41 channels that come in good.

As far as indoors, We are using mohu leaf antennas in two bedrooms with fairly acceptable results but a little pricey for what you get. You have to find just the right position for them also. Good Luck

            Single-channel antenna?
            by Hondaman
Recently I switched from my Gray-Hoverman to the Antennas Direct ClearStream 4 MAX. Seems to work about as well as the old G-H in my attic (one-story ranch home), but the Antennas Direct unit can be mounted outside on my chimney if desired.

I should mention that I was also using a 29-inch "T" shaped antenna for RF channel 11. I know you're not supposed to use TWO antennas unless they have the same length coaxial cable going into your combiner (and even then there might be problems). So I made sure the cables were equal length.

            Years ago I made a "T"...

            Gray-Hoverman antenna
            by Hondaman
            Hello all,

Recently I'm upgrading my Gray-Hoverman antenna. Original design. I cannot use a "double-stacked" antenna because of attic space. I do not wish to mount anything to my chimney.

I am using a separate antenna for WHAS Channel 11 (they are using RF Channel 11, 198-205 MHz). I replaced my 29-inch "T" antenna made out of #12 or #10 wire. I made a 58-inch "T" antenna out of 0.25-inch copper tubing. Hooked it up with a matching transformer to the 75-ohm coax going to my TV. I held the "T" antenna up against my ceiling, less...

Samsung UN60EH6000F Black Screen, Backlight and Sound Good. Power Cycle Returns Picture
            by Mgiffune
I have a 60 inch Samsung UN60EH6000F flatscreen TV. The screen went black a few months ago Sound is good, backlight is good, no menu. I replaced the TCon board with a used board purchased from Ebay. It worked fine for a 3-4 months, then the screen started ‘fading' back. Once again, sound is good, backlight is good, no menu. However, this time the picture looks fine for about 10-15 minutes, then fades back. If I power cycle the TV, the display reappears, for another 10-15 minutes, then fades black again. Repeatable ever time.

I ordered a supposedly ‘new' Tcon board this time, and
